Cartoon network! 2 episode blocks and you were usually late home from school for the first part, but the show recapped after commercials so much you still got all dat hot Goss 😂
Another thing to highlight. Their training is often times something to help people out. The milk, the fields, the construction, and so on. Roshi says they're even getting paid for it, but that's not the point. His method is teaching them to help people just as much as it is about building themselves.
I always assumed the money they earned was to pay for groceries. Since they needed so much energy for training. So a win win. They get food to become stronger and help out the villagers.
Kanesennin's training is to help them surpass human limitations, without them realizing that's what happening to their bodies. Hence the weighted turtle shell. And yes Kamesennin did have a student that didn't come out great. That student was Gyumao.
Turtle Hermit Training isn’t just about strength training. It’s about normalizing helping others. Every time they deliver milk. They are helping the milk man and the milk drinker. Every plowed feild is work the farmer didn’t have to do. Every task at the construction sites got those construction workers, who probably get paid by the job. Way more jobs done. Way more roads built, way more people getting homes. Look at how good of people all the characters in the show who went through turtle hermit training became.
Yup while Crane Hermit training is the opposite which focuses on just murder or even killing innocent people but thankfully Tien and Chiaotzu eventually saw the error in that and wanted to be more like the turtle hermit people.
Strength, Endurance, Power, AND Good morals/Discipline. I love how the Turtle School represents what Martial Arts is supposed to be about in all of its aspects. Sure, it’s self empowering, but it’s also about the philosophy of being a good human being, as Roshi nailed that on the head with this arc. Since we brought up the Crane School, I think bringing in the rival school in the second World Tournament arc was genius because we can see martial arts as well from the people who abuses said power martial arts brings people. Not saying Toriyama was a philosopher or anything, but he showed he understood what martial arts is supposed to mean and how it could get twisted when he wrote the Turtle and Crane Schools.
Every time I rewatch Dragonball, I always look forward to this part of the story. It's just so beautiful. Honestly one of my favorite parts in the entire series.

probably bc kids during that era were being groomed into becoming workers, preaching improvement and physical health but not a good mental. or maybe im looking too deep into it and it's just the dubbers not having enough lip-flaps in the animation to match the dialogue lol
I love how OG dragonball sometimes uses almost a philosophical approach! All these ideas still loom large in goku and krillin to this very day! Easily the most important training either of them ever did.
It’s funny you say that, I’ve already posted this but it actually is a philosophical practice called the Vita de Contemplativa. When I saw the first training arc I was floored that this man, who probably didn’t know about the practice, actually outlined it perfectly as if his soul knew it. RIP Akira Toriyama. I’m glad your name is now in autocorrect.
The resting part is also an underrated bit, cause as much as you have to gradually increase the intensity of your training in order to get the results you want, your body also needs time to get used to the changes, hence why there is always a rest period in between stints. With the benefit of hindsight, this is why Vegeta's training was not as effective as Goku's. Vegeta is talented, but the man just keeps pounding on the intensity without ample rest, which ended up costing him cause his body was not fully prepared to adapt.
Exactly. Over a decade I had a real real workout in years and I ended having "T-Rex" arms or DOMS basically I could barely move my arms so I had to take a break for a day or two.
Sadly, Vegeta never trained with Roshi, never trained with Korrin, never drank an ultra divine water, never trained with Kami, and vegeta doesn't know how to train unlike Goku, now he can catch up to Goku with Whis training

Toriyama revealed two years ago nappa is fairly intelligent but is hotheaded. Toriyama revealed he created raditz to introduce the concept of goku being an alien and to build up nappa and vegeta
When og goku fights the first android it literally says goku could be an alien. Also oolong also asks if goku is even human. They were referencing it from the first like 30 episodes. OH and goku not being able to tell men from women is another hint at his nonhumanness. It’s like how you see a dog and can’t tell immediately it’s gender, but dogs know either others genders just by looks. Humans know each other genders easily but an alien might have some confusion on the distinction. Sometimes I wonder if we have such pronounced gender differences like how we do because an alien runs our planet and needs the blue/pink distinction to tell us apart.
@@VEE0034 Monkeys and apes look a lot like us but we can’t tell their genders off looks alone. Excellent video! Philosophically, the Turtle Style is fascinating. The ideal of the martial high-culture of Qing dynasty China and Edo period Japan was the scholar warrior, someone who balances their destructive skills with peaceful and introspective arts like scholarship or flower arrangement. The idea being to forge a warrior into a more refined and complete person. The Turtle School follows this framework to a tee, but ditches the trappings of gentrified martial arts in favour of a blue collar approach that uses common laborer's jobs and natural hazards to increase the fighter's abilities and normal schooling to sharpen their minds. With the end result being a martial artist who can function and earn a living basically anywhere, while working their training into their trade work. In terms of the actual exercises, basically everything they're doing can be tied back into fighting skills or conventional training methods if you think about it, just dialed up to 11. For example the way they step through the sand is basically identical to a training method called mud-stepping that's meant to train you to lift your legs for kicking and stepping. And the construction work has them hauling, throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting and dumping things with a wide variety of lengths, weights and and weight distributions.
I like that Dragon Ball is showing blue collar work in a positive light here. A lot of modern media depicts blue collar workers as either uneducated or miserable because they hate their job, but that hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m “white collar” (software engineer) but I grew up surrounded by positive examples of blue collar men. My dad was a mechanic and then started his own business doing home inspections and contracting. My uncle owned a barber shop (still does). One of my grandfathers was a fire fighter, the other worked in a tire factory. My older brother became an HVAC technician. I learned a lot from them - critical thinking, perseverance, the value of hard work, how to change a tire, how to change my oil, how to build something like a deck or a swing set out of just wood and screws. The only reason I even got into software engineering in the first place is because the family computer died and I decided to see if I could resurrect it, which got me into building and fixing computers, which started me down the path of computer science. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t been taught to work with my hands or shown how to take something apart, figure out how it works, and put it back together.

Amazing analysis bro. I remember watching all of this on TH-cam when I was a lot young. I then searched up "Goku and Krillin DB" to have a nostalgia trip, then I stumbled upon this GOAT'd piece of media. Made me sub right away with the humor and production quality. You have a very unique style when it comes to content my guy, keep it up! ❤️🔥
No wonder Goku was always a step above Vegeta. He was doing all this for his training while Vegeta just did lots of pushups and sit-ups and drank plenty of juice
Unpopular opinion: I like DB more than DBZ. I loved that it was about finding Dragon Balls and kung-fu fighting. The Earth in this show was so fantastically goofy with talking dinosaurs and flying cars. It was this fun 80s sci-fi version of Chinese myth. Love it.
This was a great video, I liked your perspective on Roshis training when you said “making them hyper competitive but still humble” and said that that’s hard to do. I agree
I started watching OG DB after seeing Z as a teenager, and I watched that nap scene at work while on lunch break. Put me so at ease, i waited to watch the rest at home so I could experience it again. I loved these episodes.
This training arc right here is why Goku was always outpaced Vegeta. Vegeta went as hard as he could as long as he could and left his body in shambles. Goku, meanwhile, has an amazing understanding of how much is too much for his body, and it's all thanks to Master Roshi.
Bro this deserves more likes and attention. What a wonderful video on what it was like to for kid Goku and Krillin. You made all the good points here like Goku and Krillin learn to fight for sport/honor and not for riches or fame.
Say what you will about Roshi’s…tastes, but as a teacher he was definitely one of the best ones out there. He taught Goku and Krillin the value of hard work instead of just focusing exclusively on martial arts techniques, and even when their training was finished and they fought in the Tenkaichi Budokai, Roshi went in disguise and beat them as Jackie Chun so that they wouldn’t rest on their laurels and realize that they still have a lot to learn.
I remember watching them train ... living a balaced life. I stopped complaining having to go school on foot. I pictured my backpack was the turtle shell and even went zig zagging trees haha. I would get to the classroom all hyped.
Just recently subscribed. As an up and coming boxing just back into training… this video was very personal to me and I grew up with DBZ too… such a great vid I’m looking forward to your future videos 5:12 definitely relatable. Hill runs then burpees
I had to subscribe this video was too well done. Dragon Ball always humbles my soul and puts life into perspective for me. I love DBZ and DB. Thank you for this
Krillin was actually 13, a year older then Goku...cause Goku originally thought he was 14 cause he didn't know how to count...when he was taught to, he corrects his age as 12, revealing he was always a year younger then Krillin
Watched DBZ when I was a kid. Then I decided to rewatch the series from Dragonball. I was training BJJ at the time and man, Dragonball was such a huge inspiration during that period. I also did a compititon and got a few humble wins in. Dragonball forever! 💪🏾
I get your sparing point at the end of the video but I have to say: It wouldn't be Roshi Training if this would have been included. It just wouldn't be the same. We would remember it diffrently and not that wholesome like you explained it. Remember it is the only training camp where actualy fighting isn't a thing, but to be better in fighting you have to go through that. I just love that aproach. Even at Master Quitte Son Goku had to fight a little bit - to catch Master Quitte. There are so many places where Goku had literally to fight to get better. So I love the fact that the real base is at Master Roshis Training camp. Great video by the way
The greatest thing about Roshi's training is that it's actually continued to help Goku even after he's far surpassed Roshi in power, same with Killin. Which is why in DBZ, Goku and Krillin are consistently the best Saiyan and Human warriors respectively. The training isn't about scale or techniques, it's all about building on the fundamentals to become stronger. Train hard, never cut corners, eat well, study well, and rest well. As a Result, Goku and Krillin not only grow incredibly strong quickly through hard work and proper nourishment, but they also rest properly when needed. It's also why both of them are tactical geniuses against opponents who are stronger than them.
最高。I started reading DB when I was 7 years old. Perfect concentration & ambience every month with every release. I know very well now how formative it was, since I'm super spiritual & sensible with 人徳 off the charts. Hyper-competitive in a sense but always humble
Dragonballz was the first anime I watched, and I can tell you that watching the original dragonball first makes the Z so much better, especially the Saiyan Saga where you can fully appreciate how strong and badass characters like Piccolo and Tien are and they are getting wiped out by Nappa. Gohan's cowardice in that battle makes so much more sense because he is this little kid who has never seen battle and he's surrounded by these top tier experienced fighters getting wrecked by the seemingly unstoppable enemy. Imagine being five years old and watching Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and all these world famous martial artists getting destroyed by a single muscled maniac whose out to kill you all, THAT is what Gohan was facing! The original Dragonball has alot more technique and tactics, some which are admittedly a bit silly, but you can appreciate the stuff everyone does and when a real monster comes along like Tao or King Piccolo, things really get nuts. Both of them tank a kamehameha and then 'kill' Goku who barely survives and has to go Korin for help to defeat them. Dragonball Z has too much focus on pure power and the best best parts are heralding back to the original dragonball.
solid vid. u also gotta give roshi points for being a community man. he made his students help deliver milk and build roads and till farm lands. he didnt just waste good labor
Honestly, I had a friend in martial arts who actually does a similar training to DB. Yeah he learned fighting moves and such but his sensei actually said in his class the turtle hermit way is the way to learn not just martial arts but in lufe. Granted they didn't plow fields or work construction by hand, but everything else applued and he always encouraged kids to work hard in school, even took 30 minutes from the class to gelp them with homework, made sure they had good diets, even brought healthy snacks for them and alwats made sure they were well rested. His dojo was seriously popular especially with the parents and everyine crued when he had to close after he got really sick wuth cancer. His funeral had tons of stydents past and precent and the adult students were professionals in many fields and all credited him with teaching them responsibility, the turtle hermit way
i really loved those scenes, i could watch it all day. it was beautiful. even though it must've been hell but it was still so positive and constructive.
The fact is that DB & DBZ got an entire generation into fitness and martial arts.
It wasn't the reason, but I got into karate at 6 and DB at 8 and the two things worked together
To bad i can't do that.

I appreciate it my man!
Beautiful video for a beautiful training arc. I love the more grounded Dragon Ball.
What a comfy watch
No wonder Goku was always a step above Vegeta. He was doing all this for his training while Vegeta just did lots of pushups and sit-ups and drank plenty of juice
Unpopular opinion: I like DB more than DBZ. I loved that it was about finding Dragon Balls and kung-fu fighting. The Earth in this show was so fantastically goofy with talking dinosaurs and flying cars. It was this fun 80s sci-fi version of Chinese myth. Love it.
You’re a legend. I appreciate your emphasizing living well physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Thank you sir I appreciate it
this was super heart felt and informative anndd funny! grat vid mister
Thank you 🙏🏼
I love how out of pocket OG Dragon Ball can be, while still being one of the most wholesome family forward storylines in anime. 😊
This was a great video, I liked your perspective on Roshis training when you said “making them hyper competitive but still humble” and said that that’s hard to do. I agree
Thanks man
This was the training Arc that started it all. Glad it's gotten a lot more attention these days.
Bible verse at the wasn't just the cherry on top, it was nearly the whole cake, brother. God bless you, and thank you for the great video
God bless 🙏🏼☦️
@@SensibleSaiyanGod, Jesus bless us all 🙏. salamat sa video
we here crying.
😢
I started watching OG DB after seeing Z as a teenager, and I watched that nap scene at work while on lunch break. Put me so at ease, i waited to watch the rest at home so I could experience it again. I loved these episodes.
Just watched Dragon Ball for the first time and am up to the tournament so I was just laughing during the recap because the show is truly funny.
One thing modern DB lacked was training arcs. The lack of them made transformations feel unearned and rushed
I shall follow this channel career with great interest,
Thank you for this video. Love it
2:06 fun fact: it’s impossible to sneeze when you’re sleeping
Maybe she woke up and accidentally sneezed
I Loved the Kid Goku and Younger Krillin era.... it was a ground breaking moment that laid the tracks that brought manga and anime to the west
I miss the OG Dragon Ball, so simple and yet charming
The proverb in the end got me. Congratulations for your work bro!!
As an up and coming boxing just back into training… this video was very personal to me and I grew up with DBZ too… such a great vid I’m looking forward to your future videos
5:12 definitely relatable. Hill runs then burpees
Always love to see a fellow martial artist on the channel. Train hard bro
@@SensibleSaiyanthanks a lot man great content
Goku: "How do I become a better fighter?"
Roshi: "Just go harder at the gym."
My greatest childhood mamories..... 33 years old now and still watch dragon ball from episode 1 while eating my meals
I just keep coming back to this video. Its good stuff.
I love to hear it
I had to subscribe this video was too well done. Dragon Ball always humbles my soul and puts life into perspective for me. I love DBZ and DB. Thank you for this
Loving this channel more and more. Looking forward to more OG Dragon Ball training analyses.
Krillin was actually 13, a year older then Goku...cause Goku originally thought he was 14 cause he didn't know how to count...when he was taught to, he corrects his age as 12, revealing he was always a year younger then Krillin
Aint watched it know its gonna be a banger love this training camp
I first watched it with my dad and is by far my favorite arc, it's so wholesome, funny, and also has nice lessons. I always rewatch it
Watched DBZ when I was a kid. Then I decided to rewatch the series from Dragonball. I was training BJJ at the time and man, Dragonball was such a huge inspiration during that period. I also did a compititon and got a few humble wins in. Dragonball forever! 💪🏾
Loved it man.
Great video by the way
It's the scripture at the end that did it for me👌🏽💯
Amen 🙏
what a amazing journey it was.
even now there is so many animes but DB is just always in heart❤
4:50 Somewhere Vegeta sneezes and doesn't know why.
This was always one of my favorite parts of Dragonball!
Your vids are such a treat to me
It means a lot 🙏🏼
最高。I started reading DB when I was 7 years old. Perfect concentration & ambience every month with every release. I know very well now how formative it was, since I'm super spiritual & sensible with 人徳 off the charts. Hyper-competitive in a sense but always humble
Fantastic video!
this was a really good video and you’re commentary is cool. imma sub!
Great video!
Krillin just hedging his bets
😂
solid vid. u also gotta give roshi points for being a community man. he made his students help deliver milk and build roads and till farm lands. he didnt just waste good labor
I love the breakdown of the db series. Good work
Rip Toriyama
Krillin was just hedging his bets with that "extra" magazine
This part of the story is so underrated
Krillin knew Roshi liked dirty magazines. But not what kind, so he had some playboys and playgirls to be safe
