    It might not enjoy the recognition and fame that comes with the Contra and Ninja Gaiden brands, but make no mistake. Shatterhand is at level with the NES's best action titles.

      @Dorian_Scott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      *_"Shatterhand"_* on NES. Developed by *_"Natsume"_* and published by *_"Jaleco"_* .
      This game is freaking *AWESOME!*
      From that cool still of our hero punching a foe in the face, to the end of the game, you'll see that this is another _"Natsume"_ highlight. Next to games like, *_"Wild Guns"_* , *_"Power Rangers"_* , and my favorite game by them, *_"Pocky & Rocky"_* . It's practically unreal how underrated *_"Natsume's"_* NES games are, since when most refer to that company, they usually refer to their SNES titles (🤔... *_"Much like I... Just... Did... MOVING ON!"_* ).
      I'd like to briefly mention that this game was originally based on a Japanese Live-action TV Show titled, 特救指令ソルブレイン, ( *_"Tokkyū Shirei Soruburein"_* ). _"Super Rescue Solbrain"_ , was basically all about police mechs defending Tokyo from crime syndicates in place of the _"Winspector"_ Police after they left Japan to fight crime in France. The show ran for 53 episodes.
      As a kid, obtaining Japanese games, I would sometimes love to hang out with my Japanese friends from back then and watch lots of Anime, and these Live-action shows (I think I remember seeing the weird Japanese Spider-Man show). I saw *_"Solbrain"_* and thought that it was a decent show.
      Then we got the Famicom game, and we had lots of fun with it... and jammed out to the kick-ass soundtrack. (😁 Ah, what great memories games like this and *_"Super Mario World"_* constantly bring me.)
      POSITIVES
      • *Great Graphics* (They're dark, gritty, and look great. It kinda reminds me of *_"Batman: The Video Game"_* on NES.)
      • *This MUSIC* (This is easily one of my favorite NES soundtracks of all-time. Every song in this game is super catchy and just awesome all-around. )
      • *Fun Gameplay* (This is a pretty good platformer from the 90s NES era. What I like most about this game other than the music, is that helper robot mechanic. Not only do said robots come with a variety of weapons to use, but collecting 3 of the same letters twice turns you into a powerful robotic force to be reckoned with... for about 20 seconds. This form *DECIMATES* most bosses.)
      NITPICKS
      • *Time Loss as the 20 Second Robot* (ANYTIME you get hit while in this form, you lose 1 second of time. It's mildly annoying.)
      Final Rating: 9.8/10
      This game is an absolute must if you're looking for a great NES platformer from a competent developer.
      I would also recommend the Japanese version for if you want to fight crime as a Robocop-esque robot like the Japanese show it's based on... and to play that Japanese exclusive carnival stage that this version doesn't have.
      You figure *_that_* out.

    For me, few things in video gaming match the goosebumps I got the first time I saw the stage select screen emerge after beating the first level. It was like, 'Okay, NOW the real gaming begins.' It's such a tiny thing but the way that comes up just sets the entire tone of the game so nicely. Definitely a classic, westernized or not.

    A similar feature is in River City Ransom, where you can kick crates and tires. RCR actually has the most advanced and realistic physics system of all NES games. It's the Half-Life 2 of NES.

    The first time I played this game at my cousins house I was blown away like never before in my life, it felt like it was a SNES game and I couldn't help but marvel that the NES could achieve that kind of graphical and playable quality.
    For years I waited for a sequel (SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii) and my illusions fell to the bottom when Jaleco went bankrupt in 2014.
    Some time later I learned that a new developer called City Connection Games rose from the ashes of Jaleco and went back to programming games, on their Japanese website you can see that they recovered the rights to all Jaleco games (including Shatterhand), I asked them on their TH-cam channel in all possible languages if they will release a sequel but they have never responded to me, I don't know what to do to pressure them to give me an answer.

    • @2kBofFun
      @2kBofFun ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, late NES was really good. If you put the 101 games that both got a release on the NES and the SNES side by side, you'll be amazed more than half of them are clearly better on the NES, and only 1/6th is a clear victory for the SNES. Sure, the graphics are more detailed on the SNES, but the NES palette has its charm, and most of the times the SNES action is dumbed down because the CPU could not handle too many enemies. So NES versions offer a better challenge.

    Shatterhand is mind-shattering! The developers at Natsume (and Jaleco as the publisher) are obviously being this one! It has the same basic look and the feel and control are reminiscent of their earlier NES game Shadow of the Ninja, another awesome game. The graphics are well-done, the control is excellent, and the music rocks! I am very rarely let down when I pop a Jaleco game into my NES. The gameplay for this game is similar to Capcom's Mega Man, Bionic Commando, DuckTales pogo jump, and Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden series. Shatterhand's release falls between Natsume's action-platformers Power Blade and Power Blade 2. Second, the game's publisher, Jaleco, was not exactly a big 3rd party. They had several hits back in the day. I know their Bases Loaded baseball franchise for Nintendo being pretty popular, and they also are known for doing the NES port of the PC adventure game Maniac Mansion, The Last Ninja, Cyberball, Rampart, Bravo Jaleco!

    Such a great game, and Natsume was such a great developer on the NES. Sadly, I didn't know about it when it was current. I found out about Shatterhand many years later. What was so cool about that was I saw a video review of the game and thought it looked really good and had this feeling it would be an amazing game. A lot of times, that's really hard to tell without actually feeling how the game plays, but Shatterhand was as good as I hoped it would be. Because of the focus on punching, but also the graphical style and music quality, a lot of people say it reminds them of Batman, and I would agree with those. Playing one makes me want to play the other, and both Shatterhand and Batman are very high on my list of favorites for the NES.

    You did know that Shaterhand is a pirated copy of Super Rescue Solbrain right?
    It's not hate but I would have liked us all to be a single community united by the original version of the game.
    I still love you guys.

    Now that's what I like to see Shatterhand, an 8-bit Nintendo game whith 16-bit quality graphics, It totally look like a mini Super NES game featuring a unreal body flow from standing to jumping to clutching on the mesh fence.

      Many NES games that also were on the SNES beat the SNES in graphics and game play. No idea why. SNES had some shitty hardware limitations.

    Too bad I had never heard of this game until a couple years back. I had played another Natsume games at the time and would truly grabbed this if I saw the Natsume name in the box.

    • @Dorian_Scott
      @Dorian_Scott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a very late NES title. That might be the reason why you've never heard of this game. By the 90s, everyone pretty much abandoned the NES for the SNES and Genesis. People missed out on some *AWESOME* NES games this way.

    • @magoid
      @magoid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dorian_Scott I was a NES player well into 1993. Played most of the last big titles, like Battletoads and Double Dragon, Kirby Adventure and TMNT Tournament Fighters.
      I believe it was just a matter of it not being available in my neck of the woods.
