- Join us as we continue work in the garden by installing our NEW decking area! I'm joined by my dad as we build a framework and fasten the composite decking on top. Along with that I plant some trees and much more as the garden transformation continues!

How brilliant are Dads !! I'm giving Shaun's dad a big shout out as being a father to a similar aged son myself I could see your dads satisfaction in helping you out and I'm well aware your parents will be missing you already to a point . I do like seeing people reach out to dads for help, we may be bad cooks compared to mothers but we have our uses . Totally enjoying watching you two build your first home together and I must say your both doing a great job , especially lucky to have Charlotte or your home would look like a man cave 🤣 instead it's looking really nice and better for Charlotte's interior input , it's what women do well , turn a house into a home. Keep the videos coming as it's perfect for me not being a Halloween scare event fan as an alternative watch to your scare videos 👍

Nice to see someone appreciate their dad, my dad passed away two years ago before he could help me do all of my house. Cherish every moment mate, you're lucky to have such a great relationship with your dad so many people don't.

Nice work.. You'll 100% Need alot more frame work for your decking.. Posts need to be put all under it.. Ideally you'll need 4x2 or 6x2 timbers for the frame and fitting the timber on its edge.. It'll be very bouncy as it is..

Shawn. On the fake grass. Tips. Weed killer the ground, then membrain, then a load of sharp sand, rake and compact that down then lay the grass. Good luck. Love your videos!

Happy to see it all coming along so smoothly. Your personalities definitely help with this, if something went wrong with anything in my house it would be like a nuke has gone off, arguments left right and centre 😂. No but seriously, one thing you could maybe do is when you get that edging in between the grass and the conifers you could potentially add pebbles or something that’ll fill in that soil.
Great looking job! We have composite decking it’s great. I agree with the comments re; joist centres should be 450mm to avoid sagging. Also, is the framework timber treated (for outdoor use), otherwise it will rot quickly. It looks like interior timber. Cheers 👍

Hate to be that person but as a joiner the one thing I would of done is coating the subframe in a bitumen paint to preserve the timber underneath . It stops any rott. Great job though Shawn 👍

Best time to do the garden, you want to enjoy it in summer, not be working on it, so get it all sorted in winter, I always remodel the garden in winter. Lovely to see you both experiencing the joy of making your first house a home

Coming along nicely. Was concerned about the size of the gaps between the decking panels..i.e..accumulation of small items building up between the panels BUT given that there will be very little grass/ general shrub cuttings / soil borders / sandy stoney gravel...in your garden when finished, it should be fine. With the Conifers, advice i will give is....when "Trimming" yes trimming.....do NOT cut too deep, too much off......as easy to over do and the Conifer will not like it and die and go Brown dead in the patches you over cut too deep. Better to "Trim" twice a year than cut back deeper once a year. You want to keep them Evergreen ...lol.

Great job! However, the timber looks untreated. It will not last as long as treated. I can see you have given it a lick of paint which may help to preserve it for awhile. Make sure you have supports under the joists to prevent any bowing. Also, please check your damp proof course. It must be higher than the decking (you should be able to see a black lining between the bricks). Composite decking is a great choice but be careful as it can scratch very easily.
Ideally, for the artificial grass, you should cover the ground first with chippings which aids in drainage (20mm chippings/clean) then a sand base or dust/duff. Peg the grass down and then cover the grass with kiln dried sand and use a stiff brush to brush it in. Keep brushing against the fibres/strands to give it a more realistic appearance and occasionally treat it with weed killer.

Looks great. The one thing I would check is that it looks like you’ve got your decking higher against the house than your damp proof course which could give you problems as water soaks through. I might be wrong but generally there is a damp proof course that is a couple of bricks higher than ground level to ensure water does not soak through.

Hey Shawn and Charlotte great video as always. If I was you I would prepare for the big shed first then the water feature, Rocks and finally the artificial grass in that order so you don't ruin the artificial grass.

Hi, composite decking is very good, my only worry is the spacing that you have your joists at (they look very wide apart which will cause sagging)
Not sure of your board sizes, but for a 25mm thick x 100mm wide board = 400mm joist centres, 38 x 150mm board = 600mm joist centres and 50 x 150mm board = 800mm joist centres (these apply to timber decking but I would still apply to composite).

Be careful with those conifers. Many a neighbour war has started from them growing into MASSIVE buggers. Ultimate light blocker.

Looking great - early warning, make sure you know about building regulations as you don’t want neighbours reporting you for going a few cm to high.
