"Combat is like crack cocaine. It's an enormous high, but it has enormous costs. Any sane person would never do crack. Combat is like that. You're scared, you're terrified, you're miserable, but then the fighting starts, and suddenly everything is at stake, your life, your friend's lives. It's almost transcendence because you're no longer a person. You lose that sense, you're just the platoon, and the platoon can't be beat. And not to mention there's a savage joy in overcoming your enemy, just a savage joy. And I think we make a big mistake if we say, 'oh war is hell'. We all know the 'war is hell' story-it is-but there's an enormously exhilarating part of it." -Marlantes, The Vietnam War
Amazing quote with awful human depth poured in it. Being aware that basic-human instinct can override almost any situation is a blessing and curse in disguise. Laying dormant until you summon it yourself or awakens on its own.
When I came back from the sandbox...his books saved my life. Matterhorn was a masterpiece. I had the privilege of meeting him at a college seminar I went to in DC and he respectfully and amazingly read my outline for a personal memoir I wanted to write about Enduring Freedom...he was so supportive and stated "Brother even if you don't get it published it will climb your mind over mountainous hurdles and will be good lessons to pass on to your children and grandchildren. It might even save your life." Karl Marlantes is the epitome of the type of LT you want to serve under as an NCO
As a Vietnamese speaking to you - bread: true. We youths can't forget or forgive, however. Only those who fought, died and lived have the right to forgive. We who reaps the fruits of their labor and sacrifice have no right to forget.
Do you mean didn’t know what they were doing? I remember this track playing specifically when Nixon and Kissinger were discussing how best to deal with Daniel Ellsberg after the Pentagon Papers leak.
After hearing this song in parkour fortress I actually thought it was part of the original game (Mirrors edge) until I listened to the full soundtrack of it. I still love this song.
There was a boy half my age that listened to you faithfully. I didnt learn until i was fucking old how meaningful this music was! My song list is nit what it used to could be! Yes! Thats diuthern engrish!
this was great fun. i love how they implemented the sounds of the game boy that i got for Christmas in 1994 into the music, haha made me appreciate the track even more
All the other nominees score had no identity. 50 years from now when you listen to all of them you can't tell each of them apart. The Social Network theme stands out from the pack. Just like what Vangelis did for Blade Runner or Brad Fiedel for the Terminator. And lastly, arguing about personal preferences is stupid. If you really like the artist you wouldn't need an award to validate it.
Hi, there are several lists of Suits soundtracks on youtube but i haven't found that piece(btw i prefer the 'original' one ahah), most of them are just songs. Fyi one of my favourites is: The xx - Intro
Or did we wait for the mechanical banshees to scream upon asphalt in the cool distance, blocked by layers of concrete slabs and manufactured mediums to hide within as the elements lay upon the senses? Somewhere one stands and speaks to the sky, wishing for answers to rain down, but only to be seen in obscurity when the mind is not looking. Subtle. Like a nuance sunset, one does not gaze upon it until the bony fingers of the forest swallow it deep within the curved horizon. Remarkable, knowing one derives their age from revolutions around the lights in the sky, eyes of nature shine radiant, but do take care; further inspection reveals an ultimate conundrum. The romanticized death sheds anew, giving everything yet asking for nothing.
SlamifiedBuddafied Just a hobby, huh? Not bad, app development is a hobby of mine. Soon engineering too, just need the money to get the tools. And the space.
Good luck with that. I hear apps can be quite lucrative, as well as other programs. Now when you say engineering, are we talking computer engineering? (I imagine so)
SlamifiedBuddafied Thanks. As for engineering, though. Mainly electronics, but also some ideas that I am thinking of that almost seem impossible. I have a design for a generator that does not need fuel to generate that only uses things you'll find in the shops. And I mean just sit there generating not "pull the crank to make electricity" style generators. I have some others but it will take too long to explain them all. And as for apps, well I have almost finished it. Only need to add a few things and change a few things then I'll be on my way.
@OfficialTechnician Totally. The Lion King, Muppet Treasure Island, Madagascar 2, Despicable Me. Let's not forget The Rock, The Fan, True Romance, and Cool Runnings, yeah we can all remember those scores viscerally. What does Reznor have? Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral, With Teeth, who can even recall what was on those albums? Of course, this being Reznor's first movie soundtrack, we can forgive him for lack of experience. The fact his only OST is nominated for an Oscar is a fluke.
@ImINFAM0US I agree Hans Zimmer's stuff is amazing and Trent's are equally good in another way. Why people insist on insulting one just because one person won and others lost when they aren't the people who even made the music, is beyond me
The film , A scene during the court case states who was using Facebook during its early days. And he says A celebrity used it but they dont say who in the film.
@OfficialTechnician fair enough, but it still comes down to opinion. These people aren't the final deciders of what's better. Because Trent Reznor was a rockstar for years and Hans Zimmer is a classical composer doesn't make them unworthy competition.
Technically, the genre of this song is ambient, with a bit of electro-industrial mixed in. However, the entire soundtrack leans more towards dark ambient in general.
@CookieAdventures Whoa now calm down there. Hans Zimmer is an amazing music composer. It's just that his soundtrack for Inception, although still great, just didn't compare. And I don't think the swearing was necessary.
@komunista94 I get your point about an electronica movie scorer not being taken as seriously as a classical movie scorer, but I personally I have a soft spot for orchestral soundtracks, so sorry, I can't agree with you. Also, just in the case of the 2011 nominations, I found the score for 127 Hours unique too. Still along the classical lines, but still a bit different. And come on, stop the hating. I'm not a pompous person just because I like orchestral scores.
@Werejabberwock I agree. I love Trent but How To Train Your Dragon is the most beautiful score i've heard in a long time! But they're also obviously very different uncomparable scores so they really should've gotten seperate awards for greatness...!
@Jaws8u at last an unretarded reply. i'm actually a big fan of music scores. people tend to pontificate about the glories of orchestral scores over the electronic medium; but that's fine, to each his own taste. have heard all the nominees' scores; all were good actually, it's just that this ost stood out precisely because of its difference (predominantly electronica) to the other traditional styles. that doesn't mean it's bad, just different. of course others wont agree. not my problem.
@ImINFAM0US No way man. I love the Inception soundtrack and while "Time" and "The Dream is Collapsing" are amazing songs, as a whole The Social Network is a better overall soundtrack.
@CookieAdventures ...well...that's only true to the degree that the Golden Globes are objective measurements of a soundtrack's merits. Not to take sides on this debate.
i loved the inception soundtrack, seriously when i was watching the movie i was just thinking, my god what an unbelievable movie and soundtrack. but the social network is flat out a more intriguing and interesting movie. just like its soundtrack. it fucking deserved to be recognized way more than inception
Nope..I don't think so. The fact that Hans Had already got an Oscar is one such Fact. Another is that The Oscars DEPEND on the Campaign of the film. And the Social Network..their Campaign was really fine. Plus, Hans Doesn't Even bother about these Awards. In my Opinion it should Be Hans Zimmer. His Score is something which would be Remembered for Ages. But The Social Network did an exceptional job at it too
@komunista94 Have you even listened to "How to train Your Dragon"? Because, well, you should... just type in forbidden friendship and watch the 2nd vid. It's worth your time.
Alright, guys, I think it's time we admit who the real winner of the Academy award should have been. That's right, everyone, say it with me...How to Train Your Dragon! ...what do you mean I was the only one that thought it would win?
@komunista94 Have you listened to ALL 5 full scores from the nominees? You wouldn't make that comment if you had. The score for TSN is very unique and different from typical movie scores, but that doesn't make it miles better than the other nominees, as you imply. If TRON had scored a nomination, you wouldn't dare say it's score has no identity or that you can't tell it apart from the rest.
@ImINFAM0US He very well may be, but for Inception, I don't think so. It's really just 2 notes played over and over and over again in a slow, droning rhythm. It sounds epic but lacks the extra "spice" it needs to surpass a complex, subtle, layered soundtrack like this.
@ImINFAM0US inception was a great film, but when you hold it up to other smash huge blockbuster movies it fell short for me. still one of my favorite movies of the year, but i think social network tops it, imo.
@crazychainsawkid1 Yeah well tell that to the people here slamming the soundtrack of The Social Network, not me. And I was not maligning DJs merely pointing out how the 'high art' pseudo-intellectuals do not like it when something totally off-tangent from their Victorian highbrow pompousness invades and totally screws with their realities.
@Zodiac11111 just set piece after overblown set piece is all Inception amounted to, and it's disgusting to think the man who made "Following," "Memento" and "The Prestige," has come to this. Now "The Dark Knight Rises," maybe the most inane title they could have used, will be his next opus, but with no Heath Ledger to give an inspired turn as The Joker, it's gonna have to up the ante on balls-to-the-wall action, just sensory overload, we already have a james cameron thank you, no room for two

literally still listening.....

This also appeared in The Vietnam War documentary, to great effect
10 years later and I still keep coming back. From the film to the score, the entire production was simply a masterpiece!
Still coming back??

This song gets my blood pumping.
Best song to listen to after swimming in open sea
That's such a specific thing to do before listening to this.
I like that this also sounds like a digital and ambient version of the The Fragile album.
