R. I. P. to the great Sergio Mendes. He was brilliant and always one of my most revered and admired idols. He created more than just a sound, he created a feel, an experience in which you were transported to a beautiful, romantic world all its own. His music is a genre until itself. I first discovered him when I was 13, in 1966. I am 71 now and this is still some of the greatest music of my entire lifetime...it is classic; it is as beautiful and fresh today as it ever was. Thank you Sergio, you made the world a better and more beautiful place!
Wow! Seems like a lot of us are of the same age and with Sergio as our favorite. He resonated deeply with me. I'm now 71 too. This song has carried me through my life since 1966. From my first love to my greatest love...my late wife. From the triple tiered jungle in Vietnam to the medevac hospital and learning to walk again. Through the thick and thin of life Sergio and this song has been my companion giving hope and serenity. Thank you Sergio. Rest in peace. See you when i join my wife. Until then, you and your music will be in my heart, always.
My Wonderful Father, Melvin, played all these songs on his Fischer Stereo System and it was so Awesome. I was 7 yrs old then and still listen to them at 63, As we speak my 96 yr. Old Father is passing from Alheimerz''s,. All these songs are for you Dad!!! I Love You so much, Dad!!!
The sweet melancholy this theme brings with its soft piano, the violins in the background, and especially the voices, particularly the unique female voice, of Lany Halll makes this Sergio Mendez's best song among many other fine songs for me. Thank you Master for the music. Music for the Eternity.
Sergio Mendes and his music had always been with me since 1966. His music uplifted me through the bad times and celebrated with me in the best times. I agree with my late wife the song "Like A Lover" is the most romantic song ever and his version of "Waters of March" is the best ever. He lives on in us with his music, but his presence in this reality will be heartily missed. For seeing me through my teenage years, for carrying me through one war and for serenading my love journey with the best woman, thank you Sergio. Now she can enjoy the wonderful music of yours in a front row seat for eternity.
Brasil 66 is the sound of my childhood and I'm a white boy from Kentucky! My parents were into Burt Bacharach, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana brass and even though I was in front row seat to watch their crumbling marriage, we had our Zenith console stereo and this music was what soothed my heart and will forever. Lani, I love you so much. You're so beautiful and your voice is my sanity. Thank you!!!!
Like a Lover was the flip side of The Look of Love 45. I started liking Like a Lover because the arrangement, especially the strings is insanely beautiful; also Sergio repeating the lines Loni sang because he sounded a lot like Peter Tork of the Monkees, just slightly off-key, you can't "unhear" that. This song is timeless and it's lyrics describe love perfectly.
Me too! I’m now just turned 60 yo. I’m now an old black lady from upstate NY. My dad was a professional jazz drummer 🥁. These are all the sounds of my childhood: Sergio Mendes/Brazil 66, Burt Bacharach, Herb Alpert, and last, but never least, Antonio Carlos Joabim/Jao Gilberto/Stan Getz because my dad loved this! My then married parents separated in 1976 after about 13 yrs of marriage, but my father still lives on.

thank-you sergio mendes, i was in my elementary years when i first heard your music. i fell in love immediately and then it was okay to not have a boyfriend even when i made it to high school. your music gently took me in an embrace it was just fine, i wasn’t alone. rest in peace sergio, i will look for you in heaven. ✨
Maravillosa canción tenia 6 años cuando mi Papá le encantaba Sergio Mendes y yo siempre junto a el y volver a oir estas cancion es volver a sentir a mi amado Papá.
What a wonderful song. My eternal thanks go to a woman named Renata Calani who did a show on the local radio station, once every two weeks. She introduced us to Sergio, Tom, Joāo and all the other Brazilian musicians we had never heard of and who would become the soundtrack of your youth. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
Such a wonderful, beautiful time too believe. It held, promise's that turned up lie's. Oh well. So it is. Still,, thank you Lord for the magical journey.
been listening to sergio mendes & brasil 66 since childhood. now im 24 im yearning that the love contained in this song would hopefully find me someday unconditionally and eternally
Never give up. Your match is there. I met my greatest love when I was 31 and we were together for 29 years until she passed. To her "Like a Lover" was the most romantic song ever.
Lyrics Like a lover, the morning sun Slowly rises and kisses you awake Your smile is soft and fuzzy As you let it play upon your face Oh, how I dream I might be like the morning sun to you Like a lover, the river wind Sighs and ripples its fingers through your hair Upon your cheek it lingers Never having known a sweeter place Oh, how I dream I might be like the river wind to you How I envy a cup that knows your lips Let it be me, my love And a table that feels your fingertips Let it be me, let me be your love Bring an end to the endless days and nights Without you Like a lover, the velvet moon Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep Its light arrives on tiptoe Gently taking you in its embrace Oh, how I dream I might be like the velvet moon to you [Bridge:] Oh, how I dream I might be like the river wind to you How I envy a cup that knows your lips Let it be me, my love And a table that feels your fingertips Let it be me, let me be your love Bring an end to the endless days and nights Without you Like a lover, the velvet moon Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep Its light arrives on tiptoe Gently taking you in its embrace Oh, how I dream I might be like the velvet moon to you
The original lyrics by Nelson Motta in Portuguese - Cantador convey a completely different meaning! Canto a dor - a magical play on words! Definitely worth understanding the original Portuguese words! 1967 - military dictatorship-times were different in Brasil…

One of the most beautiful love songs ever created. My understanding is that it was written by a husband-wife team to each other.
Certain days I remember great first loves and heartbreaks too. Certain people are still very vivid in my life if only by memories

Lyrics
Like a lover, the morning sun
Slowly rises and kisses you awake
Your smile is soft and fuzzy
As you let it play upon your face
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the morning sun to you
Like a lover, the river wind
Sighs and ripples its fingers through your hair
Upon your cheek it lingers
Never having known a sweeter place
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the river wind to you
How I envy a cup that knows your lips
Let it be me, my love
And a table that feels your fingertips
Let it be me, let me be your love
Bring an end to the endless days and nights
Without you
Like a lover, the velvet moon
Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep
Its light arrives on tiptoe
Gently taking you in its embrace
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the velvet moon to you
[Bridge:]
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the river wind to you
How I envy a cup that knows your lips
Let it be me, my love
And a table that feels your fingertips
Let it be me, let me be your love
Bring an end to the endless days and nights
Without you
Like a lover, the velvet moon
Shares your pillow and watches while you sleep
Its light arrives on tiptoe
Gently taking you in its embrace
Oh, how I dream
I might be like the velvet moon to you
Thanks for the lyrics!
I think it's "temple that feels your finger tips"
No, it's "table".
