  • Diabetes can be difficult to control and Meaper developed a really low blood sugar that needed lots of treatment.

Thanks for sharing! My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes (514). I can see the value of having a glucometer and keeping a record of test results so that hypoglycemia doesn't become a problem if he becomes more insulin sensitive with the diet change and insulin injections.

Same here with my cat! My cat was diabetic then went into remission and now diabetic again- but I think maybe she’s going into remission again. You have to watch for that too, your cat could suddenly go into remission and not need insulin anymore.

    • @TheBontekraai

@@milliem8051 have you tried putting her on wetfood? i learned that dry food is full of carbohydrates and those are not needed for a cat and while it's not proven, it's definetly likely that carbohydrates is what gives cats diabetes.

Hi my cat has been diabetic for two years and something very important that I’ve learned before you go like grocery shopping or leave the house always check their sugar right before you leave it’s better if it’s high even because I have heard so many people say I only went to the store and they come home and find that their kitty has passed away from low sugar.

Hello. I have a cat newly diagnosed with diabetes. I am learning how to do the blood glucose test and I give the insulin every 12 hours. All is well with the diabetes part. However, she has a chronic condition of IBS (irritable bowel) so on occasion she will vomit her food up and I’m afraid she could become hypoglycemic. Sometimes it’s just a hairball but I am concerned she could become hypoglycemic and have a seizure. Your video is very helpful because as you suggested, I can always give her the Karo syrup if she shows the signs that your kitty Turtle showed. Great video!

My 8 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. The symptoms we noticed: huge increase in urination, lethargic and rapid weight loss. After a month of symptoms we took him in. His glucose check was 374, very high. A week later 200, a week later 254, and a week after that 304. He is getting 2.5 - 3.5 units of Lantus every 12 hours. He is very good for his car rides, but he is still struggling with guarding the water bowls and lots of urinating. Ordering a brand new vile of Lantus next week to see if his numbers will stabilize, this has been hard. We go thru 38 lbs. of Scoop Away litter per week, it's a lot! Very concerning.

My cat was never overweight-only 10 to 11 lbs; less than 3 yrs old when diabetic, and would not eat soft canned food no matter what, but will eat Science Diet Hairball and Urinary hard kibble 2 x D and has real salmon treats as treats or chicken as treats. Insulin 2 x D 2 units every 12 hours. Monitor her glucose with vet every 3 months to keep from ketoacidosis. Why do they get diabetes if they are slim and eat healthy food? When the cat first was diagnosed, glucose was 300 to 350, and then, stayed stablized at 2 units.

Loved your presentation! So full of good info!
My 4 yr old cat just got diabetes diagnosis. His urinary and water intake symptoms started coincidentally with horrible disruptive construction to replace all our pipes in the home( so he stayed under the bed for 2 weeks! ). We are 70 somethings and the house is pretty quiet normally. He is not obese and his symptoms are about gone (his intake is ⅞ to 1 ¼ cup a day- monitored for a week).
We are thinking about stress-induced hyperglycemia as an alternative diagnosis and wondered if he should have a fructosamine test now?
Vet says not possible but Cornel and Merck Vet Manual say yes. How long do we wait to do it to allow for stress to recede?
He's had 2 blood glucose tests- 450, then after 2 wks of DM food it was 375. He never had blood glucose tested before these symptoms.
Can we safely wait on insulin and try diet and then retest?
Your timely answers would be such a help. Contractictions everywhere and we are stumped!
    Keep up the good work!
    Hunny

Super informative video. The spontaneous dilation, back legs and mouth/breathing were very curious. My cat has been a little bit overweight and I've been wondering if dry cat food is kind of bad for cats and dogs, since they wouldn't normally eat grains out in the wild. It's convenient, though. I tested my cat for the first time because she's always so hungry -- and it was like 45. Maybe I didn't do it right or something was wrong with the test strip. She's not diagnosed diabetic nor on any meds. I'm a little confused about the Type of diabetes that cats are prone to -- one site said it was Type 1, but you're saying Type 2, which, if it's diet induced would make more sense. I suppose it could be either in a specific case?

A new study has shown that cats fed dry food have an increased risk of developing diabetes, and it's no wonder as dry food doesn't remotely resemble in any way, shape, or form a diet that is appropriate for cats, who are obligate carnivores.

Meaper is a dilute tortie, maybe that's why you kept referring to "him" as a "her." If Meaper is indeed a male, then he's a rare Male tortie as the color is sex linked and almost always female. Males are possible but are usually sterile and many don't survive early infancy. Was Meaper a male,Dr. Martinez?

I suggest going to the vet,and if you can a dermatologist. They can determine if your dog has any infections. They may also have allergies, and that could go along with the bacterial or yeast infection. Has anything changed recently? Does he lick anywhere else, like his paws? Are you on antibiotics and are they helping?

One of my dachshunds has this problem when the grass is long In my backyard, and my vet gives her Temaril when she has an outbreak, which has a steroid and an antihistamine in it. Additionally, since she will not let me bathe her, I gently rub all of her hot spots with a cool, wet washcloth, dry her off, then rub a sulfur-based save wherever she is itching.

Cats get addicted to the dry food. Its like kitty crack. Best not to feed at all becoz its high carb. Definitely not good for kitties which need high protein. Switch to canned wet food or raw. Then no diabetes, unfortunately I learned all this the hard way.

Me too. My cat would only eat dry food then after he got crystals, bladder infection bladder problems I switched to a urinary dry food and one can of wet food a day. Now he has diabetes and I'm mad and blame myself. I don't know how I can test him. His insulin and stuff just came in and I'm going to start soon and scared. He gets aggressive with anything he doesn't like or want done.

And I had to take away his dry food for a while the first time I started feeding him wet food I literally had to starve him for days to get him to finally eat it. I was going to cry. Now he can't have any dry food. But I did see they make a diabetic dry food I was thinking of buying but it's very expensive. Right now I'm just feeding him cat pate wet food. He likes the gravy more and does not really like the pate but they say that's the best for diabetic cats.

fktcd If the camera isn't deceiving us, it's a diffuse tortoise shell, which is a variation of calico...or you could call calico a variation of tortoise shell. They are usually female because it's a sex linked trait that requires at least two X chromosomes, but occasionally you get a male with an XXY karotype. In humans, that's called Klinefelter Syndrome. Interestingly, people with Klinefelter's syndrome are at an increased risk for diabetes.
