Me too and there used to be cliffs close to the right side of the airport and i used to sit there and watch those planes touch and go quite often. Wasn't supposed to be there but back in the 80's and 90's there wasn't much issue with that!
I used to love hearing these fly overhead my home on the Marin Coast near San Francisco flying out of Travis Air Force Base on the way to Honolulu,Hawaii to Hickam Air Force Base in the 1980's and 1990's.They would always be climbing through 10,000 or 11,000 ft on up to their cruising altitudes for the "over the ocean" segment,as they crossed the coast at Stinson Beach and heading southwest to Hawaii. That sound the engines made was unique and one of a kind.
This is Bangor, I take that highway every time i drive up from Belfast. I probably heard this plane flying into Bangor and jolted out of bed because, well...those engines have that sound that sends me running to the window every time. I used to stand by the flight line as a kid at Elmendorf in Alaska and watch these beautiful monsters howl in from the low clouds. Just awesome!
I grew up in Newburgh, just south of Hampden off of I-95. I used to hear these quite often as we were typically where they would turn crosswind to downwind leg for touch and goes in the traffic pattern. I worked at Delta at the airport, was a boom operator in the Air Guard unit there on the KC-135's and flew a small plane out of Bangor. I lived in Orrington and Brewer for a while too so I was pretty much in heaven listening to these along with the KC-135's and KC-10's doing touch and goes at Bangor. I moved out of state in 2000 so its been a while.
I remember the sound of TF39, now when C5M arrive at Aviano Air Base, you can't hear the howling of the engines anymore.Sin!!! Tank for the video, very beautiful
I agree; I think it's sinful! I used to dream of those planes on a regular basis after hearing them go over my house for several years until they were replaced with the Galaxy and mGalaxy. There's just something about that haunting and beautiful sound!
Excellent video! Was stationed in Germany in the early 90's and these TF39 equipped C5's flew in/out of Ramstein AB all the time. Amazing sounds. Used to load them up too.
I work near Dobbins ARB. Years ago, when I heard that "grinding sound" I would run outside to see the C5 in the air; so big, it almost looked like it was floating.
That sound always makes me think of how all of my deployments started... In a plane with all of my gear, trucks, and fellow team members. Going somewhere dangerous far away and for a long time.
Now, THESE are scary sounding, powerful engines that keep this behemoth flying! Pure POWER! And to think that this was initially Lockheed's design for commercial aviation flights.....
Use to hear and watch these things takeoff all the time when i was stationed in Charleston, S.C. you could smell the exhaust all over the base, and hear that low, piercing whine, awesome planes.
Its funny how everyone here loves the loud TF39 sound and then theres a section of the population wanting to shut down GA airports because of a little 4 cylinder Cessna 172 flying over their house 10 times a day.
Years ago at Travis AFB airshows sometimes the C5 would preform a “high performance takeoff” as it was labeled. With it empty it was unbelievable how fast that thing could get off the deck and climb out at a high angle of attack. It was the largest airplane in the world back then
Great video! A very unique sound those type of turbo fans have. It could have something to do with those vents on the sides in front. I call it a "clean" sound in that you don't hear any exhaust roar. Just the mechanism and whine!
Love that sound. I Work near Navel Air Station Miramar, no Marine Corp Air Base? Rare to see C-5’s, or C17’s but go running outside when I hear one taking off. (I’m near the end of the runway) love listening to those engines work.
It's crazy how tall that thing is. I'm expecting those engines/wings to come down WAY more but apparently the wheels have already made contact..... hot damn
That sound ive heard it all the time living few towns from westover air base about 15 miles i can see them and hear them going into air and landing that sound i will always know the sound of a c5 dont see them any more
747 or 767, in this case. The A380 uses Engine Alliance GP7200 engines, while the 747-400 uses either the PW4000, GE CF6-80, or RR RB211. The 767 also has three engine options, same as the 747-400.

Damn... I miss BNAS so much. The constant sound of the P3 Orion turbo props is now missing is heart breaking. If the base was still open, they would be flying the 737 P8 Poseidon's out of there right now. Brunswick just isn't the same without that base. and yes i know this was in Bangor.
I miss the sound of the Electra's doing the freight/mail runs, at the time it always woke me up and pissed me off but now I'd love to hear one again! Buffalo Airways bought them from my local airport. P3 would sound pretty similar I would think.
what did the military do with all these beautiful engines does anyone know? I know these C5's all got CF6's so theres a bunch of TF39's somewhere. Nothing beats the sound of these at full power its glorious.
I really hope they keep a few with TF-39s out of normal duty service, just for use at air shows and such. But I suspect they won't stop until every last one is converted.
That's a big girl. I know she's got a reputation as being overly needy, with maintenance, but I'm glad Air Mobility Command decided to modernize, and re-engine, her. I know the GE TF-39 eventually became the CF-6 line, and is the USAF's big plane engine of choice, but I would have thought they would have gone for more power than just 50,000 lbf, in the re-engine program. The TF-39 produced 43,000 lbf, and the CF-6-80 (that's the upgrade for C-5's) is 50,000 lbf just like on the KC-10, but I would have thought that since the CFM-6 line tops out at 75,000 lbf, that the AMC would have chosen greater than 50,000 lbf, for such a big, heavy lady. Yes, an additional 7,000 lbf, from 43,000 to 50,000 lbf, cut takeoff rolls by 30%, but if you can have more reserve power, why wouldn't ya go for it?
This was due to the stress on the wings that they didn’t add more thrust to the cf6. The engines on the c5m are derated to 51,250 and trust me it’s plenty of power
The re-engined C5M has a fadec for the engines. The tf39 powered C5s which you see here was throttle cable to engine fuel control. All C5s with the tf39 engines have been re-engined or retired
Forgive my ignorance.. but could a fella.. or lady please explain the little flaps that opened up when the pilot hit the gas? I assumed the engines got air through I dunno... the great big hole at the front? Just maybe?
No aircraft has a sweeter sound than those old C5a's
Yes this is one of the C5A's and love the sound of the older engines. Also i live 3 miles from the end of the runway in Hermon
I remember when I was a kid and younger man that we had these flying over the house regularly. I miss hearing this beautiful sound over my head.
It sounds like a vacuum cleaner lol

I miss the old engines. I was around Ramstein AB a lot as a kid and you could hear these engines from miles away just starting up and idling...
I sure miss the sound of the older ones too!
A C5-B doing a touch and go. I am perfectly astonished. And ooooooooooooooo, that sound of the TF 39...
Note archaic, blow in doors on engines .
Their function was to prevent compression stalls.
Also used on early 747s,707, etc
also on the TF-33s that powered the C-141

I remember growing up in elmendorf watching these and the beautiful f22s. My dad was there as an aircraft mechanics on 22s until he moved to 35s.
What a sound, that's some awesome footage!

Those mighty TF-39’s just scream! Makes me homesick. I retired from the AF in 1989, and to this day I miss it so much.
My dad got stationed at Travis in 69' so I grew up hearing that awesome sound. Thanks for posting
I lived in Elk Grove and El Dorado Hills so heard then too.
One plane I can recognize by sound alone
The sound of freedom. Honest to God...that's what it sounds like.
I work near Dobbins ARB. Years ago, when I heard that "grinding sound" I would run outside to see the C5 in the air; so big, it almost looked like it was floating.
Wil W Woah that surely sounded fun , to bad i never heard or saw one in person and in that time I didn’t even exist 😢
Memories, enjoyed the time I flew on one of these out of Dobbins AFB. That sound is unforgettable!

Its funny how everyone here loves the loud TF39 sound and then theres a section of the population wanting to shut down GA airports because of a little 4 cylinder Cessna 172 flying over their house 10 times a day.
One of the most amazing sounds in the world... a C-5 powering up. God, it gives me a hard on.
Incredible power. Short take-off in only 15 second.
Years ago at Travis AFB airshows sometimes the C5 would preform a “high performance takeoff” as it was labeled. With it empty it was unbelievable how fast that thing could get off the deck and climb out at a high angle of attack. It was the largest airplane in the world back then

I love that's air plane and the Sound is so cool
Flew a few times in this big bird-just awesome.
There was nothing like my old C5 engines screaming freedom over Travis .
C-5 will never sound the same without TF-39 :(
It'll sound better with the GE90-115B's...And probably get airborne in a few thousand feet less of runway.
matt8863 It isnt getting the GE90-115B's..its getting the GE CF6-80B and even then it's gonna sound like crap!
TF-39 is a variant of the JT9D engines used on a 747 the difference is the channels between the engine tube, and sounds like a prison siren
Jorge Figueroa The TF39 is from General Electric and the JT9D is from Pratt & Whitney
@@matt8863 I prefer the sound of the GE90-94B, but not even close to the TF39

Steel City Rails cf6 sounds awesome but they don't put them on a380
Yes, is the JT9D engine, but configured to military use.
@Jorge Figueroa Nope, the TF39 is a General Electric engine, and the JT9D is a Pratt & Whitney engine.
Is right, but if you take the two powerplants, you find it's the same, but it's good to check if GE and P&W makes an alliance?
747 or 767, in this case. The A380 uses Engine Alliance GP7200 engines, while the 747-400 uses either the PW4000, GE CF6-80, or RR RB211. The 767 also has three engine options, same as the 747-400.
