There was an internal coverup, then one of the engineers involved blew the whistle. I don’t remember if any of the 4 disk brakes made it into USAF service, but it does speak to how “Good Brakes” were an afterthought on a plane designed around an arresting hook.

The A-7 being a carrier borne aircraft did had unusually bad brakes, due to the inherent design of its brake being too small for its relative size, making it overheat easily (therefore reducing its ability to absorb heat and slowing down the aircraft) if used above 120kts ground speed which is why pilots who flew the A-7 employs the technique called "Wing Braking" or "Aerobraking" where they would use the main wings to induce drag on the aircraft by keeping the nose of plane up, therefore slowing the aircraft down to below 120-100kts, then use the brakes after they've reached said speed whenever they land on a normal landing strip.

IRL, a lot of bombs used on aircraft with LABS (Low altitude bombing system) had airbrakes so the fell a lot slower, allowing the pilot to be more accurate since he can get closer to the ground and not have to take fuse time into account, and give him more time to GTFO before the bombs hit the ground.

Ok, it says here in this Jane's all the worlds aircraft - the A7 corsair's brakes were made out of aged Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese. Tillamook Mild cheddar was originally used - but braking performance was found to be sub standard.
phly, theres a reason most modern jets roll down the runway with the nose gear lifted off the ground for as long as possible. they use the whole plane as one big airbrake to help them stop, especially if they lack a parachute. they aren't popping wheelies just to show off lol, modern brakes!
After looking through the manual for the corsair, regular ground roll distance is 3,950 feet, up to a maximum of 6,200ft in horrible conditions or with very very poor brake application. (125kias [230kmh] touchdown speed, 24,000lbs, 2000ft ia, no head/tailwind) Maximum ground roll with 40klbs weight is 12000ft. I believe the runways in wt are at least 20,000ft long, so it shouldn't have taken nearly that long to stop.
I feel that at 10.7 this plane gets the short straw most of the time. Mainly because flaraks and tunguskas can pick you up on their radar through trees and lock onto you when you're trimming the tree tops. Not to mention as soon as you spawn the poor thing, you're guaranteed a missile with your name on it is headed your way.

Did nothing about it, even told one of the lead engineers not to say anything. from what i read, it was intentional. They purposely made the brakes faulty. they said nothing because to them, reputation is better than anything. so, if it were made aware to everyone and the pilots, John would have lost all his reputation. i believe a man named Lawson ended up bringing this to light and they ended up fixing the brakes awhile after it was made aware. in short, this is accurate brake speed for the A7D. and it was all for profit. less materials to be used in the production, more money for John. it didnt work out for him lol.

The gyroscope in the A-7D's INS was so precise that even after 8 hours of precession, it remained accurate to within 1ft of initial coordinate input.
