AMD Radeon 6800 XT/6800 vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080/3070 Review - Which Should You Buy?

  • BIG NAVI!! Delayed a touch owing to the next-gen console deluge, here's the Digital Foundry verdict on the RX 6800 XT and the RX 6800. Priced below 3080 and above 3070 respectively, AMD's pricing pretty much falls into line with rasterisation performance. There's some innovative engineering here, and full support for next-gen features including VRS and ray tracing... but just how well do the new AMD cards straddle the generational divide?

      @Salt Maker Well it is kind of a gimmick given not many games have rt features, so the value of rt is low at the moment and usually requires 1440p and/or dlss. And in the future we can predict newer cards will give higher perf and the old cards won't be able to handle the rt work-loads of future games. So you are paying for something that could be considered a gimmick and has limited value as an early gen raytracing card. It might be worth it to you to experience the future now, but other people would rather wait when the are more games that support rt and better perf of rt stuff.

    As a prior 2080 Ti, and now 3080 owner - the "next gen" features are overrated. Sure, there are 4-5 games that use it effectively, but we are still a ways off before it's a widespread feature. By the time it is (game industry dev cycles are about 4-5 years for AAA games - sometimes longer), AMD should have an equivalent feature. If they don't then that's a miss on them.
    If I had the opportunity to buy both, I would have gone 6800XT. The 3080s are tapped out and 6800 series have a LOT of OC/UV headroom. Plus I game at 1440p120 since 4k120 w/ VRR is buggy at best right now.
    Also, it should be stated that DF did a sponsor spot for the 30 series (exclusive one, at that). Given that history, I look at their results with extra scrutiny. Once you take the cheese, the temptation is always there.

      I’m surprised they didn’t bench AC Valhalla, Dirt 5, Goodfall. These AMD cards are beasts at 1440p it’s a shame the AIB cards are well above msrp. I agree with you about RT being overrated and there are not enough games that support it. The same can can be said about dlss which I find more interesting. I also sold my 2080ti a month before Nvidia’s 30 series released and was lucky enough to buy a 3090. It’s going to be a couple of generations before we can get solid performance out of ray tracing until then I wouldn’t worry about it. Nvidia has been using ray tracing as another wedge, although I see it as extremely valuable. I'm sitting here in 2024 with a RX6800 in my PC, and 4060 in my laptop I just bought. And their RT performance is about the same, the RX6800 pulls ahead in everything else. So THREE GENERATIONS into RTX, 3 and a half years after this video is posted, and most people just don't care about RT because it is STILL INACCESSIBLE for many Nvidia RTX card owners, not to mention AMD. But the card can still do RT decently and there's be driver improvement. I thought the AMD cards would be 100% useless in RT, but that's not the case. I was gonna buy the 3070 during the pandemic pricing madness but it was literally $1300, I had waited too long and got the RX6800 for $600 within a day of it dropping almost $200 from previous listing. And HANDS DOWN the RX6800 aged better with 16GB of VRAM, FSR 2 and 3 are now available and fairly decent at 4K/1440p if you use the Quality setting and AMD also gave 6000 & 7000 series cards Fluid Motion Frames on ANY GAME run by DX11 or DX12.
    To look back, of course 8GB wasn't enough. If Doom Eternal, Far Cry 6 and the Resident Evil Remakes were breaking 8GB right after the 3070 release, what did you guys expect? Developers to start using LESS VRAM?? DF has always had a mild blind spot for AMD cards and Nvidia does make the best high end cards, but damn was this a bad day one recommendation. I used to think AMD was the cheap/worse option, but after owning this RX6800, my mind has changed. The RX6800 still holds up mightily at 1440p and does great in slightly older titles in 4K.

    And just reducing vram axes a marketable spec + people who may need that vram.
    They don't need to cut costs that much when everything sells out, just undercut a tad.

    AMD and Nvidia should start releasing GPUs at much higher price points but also announcing a series of price drops at the same time they announce the product. That way they can sell the GPUs at the prices scalpers are selling them for initially and 6 months or a year later when inventory catches up they can drop the price substantially. Essentially, I'd rather the manufacturers get the money over scalpers. If they announced price drops right away, people wouldn't be mad about the high prices at launch.

    The problem was seen straight away, 'next gen' is NOW current gen. Right now. Which means ray tracing isn't be some future trend, it'll be included in some form for the majority of titles going forward. Nvidia's advantage is so huge with it enabled it's difficult for me to lose out on that major groundbreaking advancement, the first we have had in a long time. Probably the most critical leap since DirectX10 over a decade ago. If you have a $500 card surely the majority want the bells and whistles. Some won't, those only wanting the highest framerates, but most will want to see this hype for RT and play around with it. That makes it an easy choice to go with Nvidia. Nvidia's 3060Ti could be $400 (when it arrives widely!) and still faster than a $550 6800XT when you have RT enabled- let alone DLSS........

    I don't think that ray tracing and DLSS should be the distinction between the two cards. I've never spoken to anyone who would be willing to sacrifice their frame rate for those features. If AMD is within spitting distance of the top end at a better price in traditional rendering, then I say everyone should consider buying it. The more money they get, the more competitive they can be which is good for all of us. I say this as a 3080 owner.

  • @volatilelyle5170
    @volatilelyle5170 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As much as I'm rooting for team red, I think DLSS should be considered in the comparisons. The lack of feature set and a price very close to the competitor makes AMD less appealing considering the performance. You can argue that 16gb vram will give it an advantage in 2 years but when you buy a GPU, you expect to get the best of it here and now. Whatever "Super Resolution" they have in the works, it should've been ready at launch. Or at least another feature that gives it an appeal over Nvidia

    Appreciate the thorough review. One quibble: it seems like you treated red and green differently when it came to focusing on current games vs speculating about future games. For green, you were happy to speculate that ray tracing would be absolutely critical in future games, neglecting to mention the spotty adoption and widely varying quality in current games. For red, you opined that no current games require more than 10G VRAM and therefor it’s not a real benefit in your opinion, neglecting to consider what future games would need. Either approach (focus only on the current games vs speculate about future games) is fine, but to be fair it needs to be consistently applied to both teams. If you give one team the benefit of speculation about the future but deny that same benefit to the other, it smacks of bias.

    I have to say... I don't know how I feel about DF about hardware reviews. Nvidia is promoted way too heavily.
    Don't get me wrong, I have no home team when it comes to nvidia or amd, and I am using a GTX1070 myself. But I am puzzled why nvidia exclusive techniques are being pushed so hard by you guys at DF. Sure DLSS is awesome, tensor core RT is awesome. But there are only a few games using DLSS. and since it requires close collaboration with game developers. I wouldn't put my money on nvidia with this feature. In 2 years nvidia has only gotten a couple of titles with worthwhile DLSS implementation (ver 2.0). that's definitely not a key selling point in my honest opinion (what it actually shows is the opposite, that nvidia has failed to offer a widely spread use of their key feature)... and it is worth stressing this in a review like this. If you have no interest in these few titles.... well. DLSS is of no value at all. At the same time. AMDs upcomming technique will work for all games, which to me sounds much more enticing, even if it is only half as good as DLSS. because I know I will have more use of it (even for a back catalogue of games). Another worry is actually the use VRAM in next-gen exclusive titles. we are looking at cross-gen titles currently, and If you are buying for the future, I would actually bet more money on AMD at this point. More VRAM. + a super sample feature with more widespread adoption + console games being optimized for AMD architecture (incl RT). In the light of these aspects AMD actually look like a good alternative, and I would rather argue that it is a close between the two, and it is actually hard to make an informed decision currently.

As long as it requires partnership, I would not bet my money on the features for the future (oh sorry, this is my other account)

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that upscaling is the future. But I am not necessarily sure that a proprietary technique like DLSS is the answer to that. Advanced texture compression on the other hand requires hardware level support, something I have not read anywhere regarding the Ampere architecture. Do you have any references on this? Keep in mind, compressing textures for storage media is a completely different from VRAM since everything displayed in the frame buffer needs to be decompressed to its actual pixel data in runtime. But this is all side tracking. If we look at DF. There's a couple of things in Richards reasoning that I feel is plainly wrong. We cannot use a crystal ball saying that something is more relevant than the other. Something that Richard is doing in this video. The future in the PC space is very much unknown in this day. Both companies bring good technology to table, but DF shoots down all the positives with AMD, and the whole video is overwhelmingly unenthusiastic (something nvidia coverage never is) they praise Nvidia tech, although they have done a exceptionally poor job on widespread adoptation in games. Like I said, I like what both Nvidia and AMD bring to the table. and to be fair, we know nothing of how the future of PC gaming landscape is turning out. Something I think other sites handle much better (Like hardware unboxed, these guys are critical to both Nvidia and AMD. they don't cut Nvidia slack when they do a poor job. same for AMD) And I think the conclusion in this video is just really poorly made. PC Gamers should definitely not put their money on DLSS unless Nvidia does major strides with adoptation.

    You go out of your way to sku results for Nvidia by using more games sponsored by them, rather than neutral games or balancing the Nvidia sponsored ones by using AMD ones also. You say the numbers do not lie which is true but you go out of your way to to sku the average with a poor selection of games. C'mon you guys should be better than this bullshit.

    I believe DLss is just a feature that can't be overlooked.. it's a game changer and definitely give a reason to buy Nvidia rather than amd.. unmatched performance on 4k and 1440p super boost on FPS.. nothing and has can compete with it imo..

      To the point that I believe Nintendo would be foolish not to use something similar to DLSS on its next, undoubtedly Switch-like and similarly underpowered console. They would gain a lot of much-needed performance ground if they do.

      If AMD doesn't deliver something similar, the next consoles may be based on nVidia and ARM. X86 is losing appeal and AI upscaling is also the way to go. NVidia has both in store.

      I'm still unsure about the amount of adoption for DLSS in the future. Right now it's certainly better than when Turing was launched but even from Ubisoft, AC Valhalla doesn't have DLSS but Watch Dogs Legion does.
      Either that's because Valhalla is AMD-sponsored title or DLSS has high cost for submitting games to NVIDIA's machine learning servers.

    DLSS is not better than a native image. It only looks better on Death Stranding if you have TAA enabled. Having said that, yes, DLSS is a feature you want to have but it’s not like native, not to my eyes at least.

  • @SlickR12345
    @SlickR12345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How is DLSS better than native image quality Richard, please explain to us peasants here? DLSS uses a lower resolution image and upscales it, apart from Control and Young Blood, in which Nvidia had over a year to optimize dlss, every other game I've seen has had DLSS be way worse in terms of image quality! I guess you can test Nvidia with DLSS and AMD with 30% lower resolution, that would make it like for like pretty much! Gee, Nvidia's next gen feature is "auto change resolution in the settings" .

    • @GENKI_INU
      @GENKI_INU 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      DLSS is not "better" than native high resolution image-quality-wise, but it's the best compromise of looking REALLY close to (and in a few cases better than) native high-res, while providing a huge FPS boost compared to running without DLSS.
      Unless a new tech comes along that is incompatible with DLSS or makes DLSS obsolete, DLSS is here to stay and will continue to be implemented in future games with improved image quality and performance. AMD missing out on a feature like DLSS is a real bummer, ontop of AMD's cards already being significantly behind in ray-tracing performance compared to Nvidia.

  • @jamescampbell8482
    @jamescampbell8482 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Saying the card "doesn't live up in Control" is very misleading. The 6800 and 6800 XT are trading blows with the 3070, which is basically a 2080 TI competitor in terms of its RT performance. If people use the optimized settings that DF came up with when running this game on 2080 TI, these cards will run it absolutely perfectly.
    Saying "DLSS takes these cards out of the running completely" and that "AMD is missing a game changing feature" or that AI is "better than Native" is complete BS marketing talk. Don't buy into that shit.
    Stick control at 75% resolution scaling with AMD's Contrast adaptive sharpening, and you will have similar performance with negligible visual differences, and if we are being honest the AMD card will be running at a higher internal resolution than Nvidia's AI algorithm runs on any of its quality presets.
    For AMD to be doing this well on their 1st generation at ray tracing across the entire stack, and at their price point is incredible. To be blunt, you guys are missing the forest for the trees when you make statements like that. For the money, AMD is kicking Nvidia's ass.
    I'm still on my GTX 1060 because Nvidia has been so expensive and anti consumer. I have been wanting to upgrade for years and Nvidia has not convinced me to. Lest we forget in some titles the 6800 XT sits between 3080 and the $1500 3090. AMD deserves serious props for these cards.

      Finally, some common sense. Up until the keynote back in October, a lot of these idiots were claiming that RDNA2 wouldn't even touch a 2080TI, let alone a 3080. Now the only arguments you see now is the typical "But...but...features!" while conveniently ignoring how dangerously close the 6800XT is to the 3080 and even *beating* the goddamn $1500 3090 in certain scenarios. For Digital Foundry to even imply that DLSS is better than native resolution is hilarious, but not surprising considering that they're very well known Kool-Aid drinkers for anything NVIDIA throws in their face. As someone who could care less about RT, NVENC, RTX Voice, etc. the XT is a complete no brainer.

      Prices of all of the new cards are being price gouged at the moment, due to next to zero availability. I wouldn't expect them to come back down to MSRP until mid January at the earliest. Also, even when the cards do become available, don't expect most of the AMD cards to be cheap. Only AMD's own founders edition cards are priced that low. The MSRP of most of AMD's AIB partner cards, are seriously overpriced (+$60 - $200 over the founders edition cards)

      @@Nickersont88 definitely! In the long run, when it's manageable and easy to get going without hurting performance, it will be much easier for developers to make lighting and really make games look amazing. It should be easier than baking lights into textures, especially as worlds and structures get bigger and more complex, getting good textures and then turning on a light and just having it work is much easier than shading individual things based on where the light is coming from. Will help make everything more dynamic too, since moving said objects would look weird once out of place.

      Not really difficult to tell if you're used to 60fps and above. No matter what kind of TV, motion both looks and feel bad at 30fps compared to 60fps. Only time it feels somewhat decent is in 1st party exclusive titles that were designed and animated around 30fps.. Like Astral Chain on the switch or Killzone 2 on PS3 though without a doubt both of those games would look and feel so much better too at 60fps. Just like every other game.

    It sucks because right now you can't even choose. You have to take what you can get if you want a card in the near term. I was lucky enough to get a 3070 as part of a new egg combo, would've preferred a 3080, but a 3070 still way better than my 1080. Now after taking a second look at the performance comparisons between all the cards, I'm half tempted to not open the 3070 for a bit in the hopes of getting a 3080 6800xt or 6800 instead.
