The weapon art of Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear was buffed to the point that nothing short of a Runebear will stagger you out of it prior to completion if you have any worthwhile amount of poise. Its cast time is crazy now.
@@plinkbink can confirm… ! I just put on Mimic Face Helm (huge +8 Arcane boost, iirc) to get 28 Arc (barely enough to use the spear)… boosted it to +9… then proceeded to land 6000+ HP damage and basically KO the engame Sewer Omens with one triple-NIHIL ! sequence … 😳
People tend to forget you can N O T charge Siluria's pain (the weapon art) fully and just brainlessly run into a small tornado, not to mention when full charged, this thing is a fucking sniper rifle, love it
I've never noticed how Frenzyflame Thrust creates a three-pronged flame pattern on the ground - kinda mimicking the Three Fingers. That's such a neat detail
A cool thing about the treespear is that the 10% holy damage buff applies to both weapons if you're dual wielding, also I believe after using the weapon art you can stack a buff such as order's blade on top of it without overriding it
Personally, I can't wait for the torch ranking video. That one might have to wait until the DLC comes out though. I feel some great torches on the horizon.
That would make the pike much slower. They would also have to increase the damage a bunch. Though In the same vein I wonder why Vykes Warspear is considered a greatspear? It has the same length and damage as the average normal spear...
@@chuckwood3426 I think it has good AR if you are built for it. On my 55 dex/38 faith build, Vyke's has like 100 more AR than any spear regardless of infusion, and it also beats out an infused Lance by around 60 AR. Infused halberds and Tree Spear beat it out though.
Love the treespear because it's really powerful, but most importantly, it's one of the only faith-scaling weapons that can be buffed with spell. Plus, it goes really well with a paladin build. Great video.
I am pretty sure that I was getting about 1.6k at level 80. At the meta level, I believe that the skill can hit from 2k to 3k damage. It is very difficult to land a hit in PvP though. All you can do is to change the charge timing to mess up their dodge, but overall, it is very punishable. In my experience, it is a god-tier one of my favorite weapons in this game in PvE, but it usually become a slightly worse Treespear in PvP, which is still decent because greatspears are strong in PvP anyway.
The black bow and pulley crossbow respectively just kind of run away with it. The hand ballista and jar cannon are funny but only useful for blasting enemy groups at long range(which they are effective at, mind you, just a bad thing to be good at) and the serpent bow is interesting for statuses but the pulley bow and crossbow are both so effective at inflicting ailments, and the crossbow gets to do it one handed so its better
You are supposed to do it yourself. Same goes with all the fire incantations in this game. You have to yell out "FLAME GRANT ME STRENTH! GIANTSFLAME TAKE THEE!" everytime you use it. Trust me, it makes them more effective.
Silurias Spear with its weapon art fully charged is super strong. i was doing some damage testing seeing what i could do to optimize the damage with my build and a full charged Ash of War was hitting for over 4000 damage.
Another great vid, thanks! I rocked power stancing the Vyke and the Treespear in midgame from level 70 to level 110, had a lot of fun with the moveset. The sprinting double attack that hits 3 times does massive damage, the jumping attack comes out quick. Keeps you really mobile on a character with pretty big weapons. Actually loved the Vyke in PvE because I thought the weapon art was so much fun to use, great hyperarmor and good damage with a big AoE. You're sleeping on madness man, even for mobs you can't madden it's still pretty good fire damage ;). But no match against the bleed spear of course! Thanks and looking forward to the next vid.

Vyke’s War Spear Skill is super great now. It does so much damage on initial usage and that extra damage is nice. Not as good as some of the other unique ones, but it is pretty great. Especially when it bumps enemies and interrupts them if you trigger it up close

Lance was one the first weapons I found blind, and it carried me through the game. Against most human enemies, 2h r1s basically stunned until you ran out of stamina. Shield pokes too. Awesome weapon.
interestingly, the current strategy for sl1 runs of the game is to make liberal use of the 0 req aspect of the serpent hunter to get some obscene damage
I would argue that it is the most viable in pvp. SInce it has 3 different pokes with different forward momentum and timing, you can really change up your attacks in pvp.
Mohg’s spear should have had the horizontal R2, Mohg swings that spear around all the time and the only swing is on the roll, shame. Still one of my favorite weapons.
Serpent Hunter is the most slept on weapon in the game. If you use magic or a shield in off hand to offset the ash you just smash guard and poise all day.

I've been using the Moghwyns sacred spear, and i think you do get a little bit of hyper armor during the weapon art, but harder hitting moves will still stagger you out of it.
Silurias tree has better scaling than the tree spear so their attack rating is closer than you think when you optimize you stats for a particular weapon
Honestly this is true for many weapons, which is why the 40 in all stats look at the rankings can give you a general overview for low/mid level and quality builds but it doesn’t always paint the whole picture.
Yeah the STR bit seems to be a case of a B- vs a D++ because on my character Treespear always edges Siluria's Tree but only by 20-30 points. The Treespear can be buffed with stuff like Bloodflame Blade though, allowing it to serve as a poor man's bleed spear if you have no ARC, not to mention the other greases. Pair it with a greatshield that has Shield Crash on it for a fun combo.
Note for Ice spear, it currently hard counters fingerprint shield spammers. The initial hit of the ice spear (the spin) breaks guards. I'd love the tree spear to get a speed buff or less FP/better tracking. That tree spear could be so fun. In general the greatspears R1s are too slow to be viable in PVP too.
I used Siluria's Tree against Malenia in offhand. It's decent to have for 2nd phase when she does the Divebomb for that ranged damage (I was running 60 STR and ~20 FTH), esp since I wasn't running any spells. You can get at least 2 hits off for at least 2K damage.
GreatSpear Sacred order skill can be buffed with enchantment..it is unique Greatspear.. sick dmg for greatspear fully bufed.. Lightning lancer build, was build i had most fun playing!
Dex gives you a relatively small increase in casting speed, but Strength has three things going for it: (1) You gain access to many more weapons; (2) You gain larger increases in protections; and (3) If you use the weapon 2-handed you get a 50% strength boost. So, to get the equivalent of 80 dex you only need to put your strength up to 54. I know many people prefer to powerstance or use a shield, but 2-handing a weapon is still very effective and it gives you the option to put quite a few points elsewhere. People forget that some large weapons have decent block potential too.
Vyke's actually not too bad. Madness in PvE is useless, but the damage output of this thing is very decent. Frenzied frame is always hitting hard in this game. The skill of this spear creates a whole area of frenzied flame which deals continuous damage to enemies.
my AoW recommendation for the greatlance for pvp would have to be Warcry, affects both 1h and 2h movesets (Where as Braggart's Roar only affects 2h moveset). Light R2 attacks while the weapon's AoW buff is active are faster than the R1's the weapon has, so it's a bit of both speed and hyper armor utility; basically it starts with a toe stab and is followed up with a upward thrust for the light R2s (not guarrenteed to catch someone, but you might notice at times that it can catch them quite quickly), and charged R2s start off with a lunging jump which staggers the enemy within the path before impact, followed up by an attack similar to the running R2, this followup attack for the most part greatly increases the chance to rollcatch someone after connecting the first charge with a running R2 (Which looks like a back to back running R2, when infact, that followup attack has they hyperarmor from the AoW buff)
also, hyper armor, if I recall, if you recieve 3-4 attacks fast enough while it is active, you will be broken out of it, or just uh, 1 bleed proc. yeah... they still need to fix bleed against hyper armor.
The serpent hunter is good for str builds that use barricade on a greatshield. It’s very niche and can’t be buffed but it’s going to outdamage a heavy infused lance.
That was my experience using it as well. It outdamages Heavy Lance, but the weapon skill is totally useless. Which is actually a non-issue, because if you play shield+great spear you can use shield weapon skills instead. I think Serpent-Hunter is much better then people give it credit for.
@@holmesholmes.8784 Well to speak specifically to the shields used in combination with Serpent-Hunter, you need >30 STR to use Golden Greatshield, Erdtree Great shield, One-eyed greatshield, Visage shield, and Fingerprint stone shield to name a few. I'm not suggesting this is a high DPS loadout. But with primary skill investment in Vigor, Endurance, and Strength; you will surgically dismantle all enemies you come across. Bossess included. Exception Mal.
Kinda unrelated but i’m playing dark souls 3 now and I really miss jumping, crouching, and powerstancing in Elden Ring. There’s a lot that I like about ds3 but Elden Ring just feels better in combat. I also miss the lock on range in ER, the lock on range is abysmal in ds3, and if you try to click rs but you’re not in range then your camera will spin away from the enemy in whatever direction your body is pointing, awful when trying to perform ranged attacks.
Mohg's trident, of course :D Large AoE bleed from weapon skill is too powerful to sleep on. Greatlance can be imbued with Ashes of War tho, including Ice spear(man I love that skill)
I'm interested if power stance bleed lances'd do a lot of build up with running attack? Because I've heard that bleed buildup counts by inputs so multihitting attacks build as much as single.
In general, power stance will double status build up. I've noticed some weapons have less build up when powerstanced so you need to test them yourself.
thanks for your video, was looking forward to this one. imho it's a shame that they locked the great serpent hunt into its place. i love the looks, the moveset and all if you just could add ur own AoW to it. especially since great spears are so underrepresented you've got just 1 customizable one at all :(
I'm personally a big fan of the Antspur. I put Bloody Slash on it for the weapon to proc both bleed and scarlet rot; also lets you use both Blood Lord's Exultation and Kindred of Rot Exultation charms for extra AR boost. I pair it with the Fingerprint Shield.
I mostly use the blasphemous blade on my arcane faith build but I do have mohgs spear as a backup when greatshield pokes are called for. I have around 63 poise and as of the last update the ash of war keeps going if I get hit a few times
@@fhmcateer Colossal have these 1 swing attacks.... If i remember correctly the Crescent Moon Axe does have some very High damage too but you have that faster cool 3 Hit combo, range should be the same as Colossal.
I've used the Great Spear mentioned in this video and it's mounted attacks are good. Big horizontal swipes with R1/L1 and charging attack puts the spear down like regular spears as well, but it follows up with a big hit. It's easy to kill human sized foes and it hits larger ones real easy as well.
Flails are amazing on horseback with their continuous swinging attacks. Twinblades are good too for the same reason but I think the flail is easier to hit with once you get used to it.
Ah, I didn't find it, now I know where it is. Lance. Oh...Lance. Moonlight, Warpick, Greatsword, old friends, one and all. But the Lance, that was the greatest. And now, my old friend shall join me again.
I think the Treespear has the best moveset of any weapon in the game, but unfortunately I think the shaft looks fugly and the weapon art is also not the best.
Been rocking the treespear for most of the game, I run other builds for fun but whenever things get tough I go back to the treespear + jellyfish shield combo. The fact that you can do that much dmg with that much range while still blocking is insane. As an added bonus, I use the jellyfish shields ash of war for a 20% dmg buff, which is kind of a work around to treespear’s lackluster weapon art.
Moghs Spear has pretty good range on its Weapon art, goes through walls and hits both above and below the player. This can be used against rooftop campers.
It's a real shame serpent hunter isn't too viable out of all the great spears it looks the coolest in my opinion it has that nameless king vibe if the back end was longer then I would run with it regardless of how bad it is just for the look itself
It might be because otherwise nothing would scale off of dex. (Except for keen ofc) Strength got fire, int got cold, faith got flame art and holy, aso...
Can't believe you promoted bloodhound step at all. It should be shamed at all times. All the sweats use royal knights resolve, flame strike, storm stomp, and a few others. Though that is for pvp.
I don't hate you, but I feel like you only brought up torches because you want to cover them. Now that you've said it I kinda want you to. I have a lot of fun with the firebreather torch.
Geart Spears are to be best used with great shields (fingerprint stone shield to be specific which requires 50 strength) so i think lance would be best of all.

@@notsubatomic2065 You don't have to take damage for it to work, they just need to be in counterattack frames, they can miss-especially due to a Spear's longer range, or simply never connect because your thrust came out faster and interrupted them, such as with the speed of a Thrusting Sword, or you can of course do it by poising through or shield poking while they're attacking, too. It works for all Pierce damage-Pierce is a type of Physical damage, don't expect any boosts to elemental damage-so, since it works on all Pierce damage, it works on the Pickaxe and Rusted Anchor, too, and the Zweihander's R2s, if you're interested in choosing the path of poise.
Anyone else very disappointed in Great Spear variety? Right off the bat, 3/6 of them are faith weapons Serpent Hunt is a gimmick weapon. It's decent in pvp, but it has a shit weapon art and can't be infused Mogh Spear is very build specific as well So really our only universally usable great spear is the lance, which to be fair is a good weapon, but is heavily lacking in the Elden Bling Department
The only thing i disagree with here is the fact that you have 40 in every stat when covering a weapon like the serpent-hunter, that scales so poorly in dex that you need to put like 2-3 points in for 1 damage bonus. The test would've been better if it was 80 strength. And the fact that its one of 2 great spears that does pure physical damage is great. Split damage weapons tend to do less damage due to said split.
Big fan of ur channel but the Great Spear review didn’t age well at all. Serpent Hunter is one of the best weapons in the game w/ an incredible moveset and you basically dismiss it as a gimmick weapon. Vikes War Spear is absolutely viable in PVE as it does fire damage and can be buffed like crazy. The Madness status effect is most def a PvP thing but the weapon is really good for PvE especially w/ the horizontal R2’s. And the Siluria’s Tree AoW is an absolutely monster and one of the best in the game. It’s way better than the Tree Spear. Back then you seemed to be way too hung up on a weapons overall AR. And it seems like every weapons AoW is overpriced in your opinion regardless of the ridiculous damage like Mohg’s Spear. Who cares what the FP cost is when it just melts everything in front on you. Still interesting to look back and see how perceptions of the weapons have evolved.
at the end of the day, the rankings don't matter that much, because they're all great spears

I fell in love with Silirias Tree the moment a Crucible poked me for 1400 damage. It exudes power and I love it.
I love it in pvp when I am able to land a danged move on an unsuspecting enemy because with my set up it leads to a oneshot

The flames resemble a pitchfork blade which I didn't noticed when using it the first time looks cool though

I really love the Silurias tree spear. If you can free aim a fully charged projectile on someone it can hit for like 1300 damage

He’s 100% wrong about Vyke’s spear, it crushes in PvE. It still has the fire effect even if it doesn’t cause madness on every target.

also, hyper armor, if I recall, if you recieve 3-4 attacks fast enough while it is active, you will be broken out of it, or just uh, 1 bleed proc. yeah... they still need to fix bleed against hyper armor.

The serpent hunter is good for str builds that use barricade on a greatshield. It’s very niche and can’t be buffed but it’s going to outdamage a heavy infused lance.
That was my experience using it as well. It outdamages Heavy Lance, but the weapon skill is totally useless. Which is actually a non-issue, because if you play shield+great spear you can use shield weapon skills instead. I think Serpent-Hunter is much better then people give it credit for.

@@holmesholmes.8784 Well to speak specifically to the shields used in combination with Serpent-Hunter, you need >30 STR to use Golden Greatshield, Erdtree Great shield, One-eyed greatshield, Visage shield, and Fingerprint stone shield to name a few. I'm not suggesting this is a high DPS loadout. But with primary skill investment in Vigor, Endurance, and Strength; you will surgically dismantle all enemies you come across. Bossess included. Exception Mal.

Kinda unrelated but i’m playing dark souls 3 now and I really miss jumping, crouching, and powerstancing in Elden Ring. There’s a lot that I like about ds3 but Elden Ring just feels better in combat. I also miss the lock on range in ER, the lock on range is abysmal in ds3, and if you try to click rs but you’re not in range then your camera will spin away from the enemy in whatever direction your body is pointing, awful when trying to perform ranged attacks.

Large AoE bleed from weapon skill is too powerful to sleep on. Greatlance can be imbued with Ashes of War tho, including Ice spear(man I love that skill)

I'm interested if power stance bleed lances'd do a lot of build up with running attack? Because I've heard that bleed buildup counts by inputs so multihitting attacks build as much as single.
In general, power stance will double status build up. I've noticed some weapons have less build up when powerstanced so you need to test them yourself.

imho it's a shame that they locked the great serpent hunt into its place. i love the looks, the moveset and all if you just could add ur own AoW to it. especially since great spears are so underrepresented you've got just 1 customizable one at all :(

I'm personally a big fan of the Antspur. I put Bloody Slash on it for the weapon to proc both bleed and scarlet rot; also lets you use both Blood Lord's Exultation and Kindred of Rot Exultation charms for extra AR boost. I pair it with the Fingerprint Shield.

Blood Fingerprint stone shield with the shield crash weapon art is literally all you need.
I mostly use the blasphemous blade on my arcane faith build but I do have mohgs spear as a backup when greatshield pokes are called for. I have around 63 poise and as of the last update the ash of war keeps going if I get hit a few times

If i remember correctly the Crescent Moon Axe does have some very High damage too but you have that faster cool 3 Hit combo, range should be the same as Colossal.
I've used the Great Spear mentioned in this video and it's mounted attacks are good. Big horizontal swipes with R1/L1 and charging attack puts the spear down like regular spears as well, but it follows up with a big hit. It's easy to kill human sized foes and it hits larger ones real easy as well.
Flails are amazing on horseback with their continuous swinging attacks. Twinblades are good too for the same reason but I think the flail is easier to hit with once you get used to it.

siluria's tree is so cool i just wish it got a little buff
I think the Treespear has the best moveset of any weapon in the game, but unfortunately I think the shaft looks fugly and the weapon art is also not the best.
Been rocking the treespear for most of the game, I run other builds for fun but whenever things get tough I go back to the treespear + jellyfish shield combo. The fact that you can do that much dmg with that much range while still blocking is insane. As an added bonus, I use the jellyfish shields ash of war for a 20% dmg buff, which is kind of a work around to treespear’s lackluster weapon art.
What I don't understand with this game is why Great Epee gets Eruption but Lance does not.
The reason they made it chargeable is so it can scale with Godfrey’s Icon 13:00
Moghs Spear has pretty good range on its Weapon art, goes through walls and hits both above and below the player. This can be used against rooftop campers.
It's a real shame serpent hunter isn't too viable out of all the great spears it looks the coolest in my opinion it has that nameless king vibe if the back end was longer then I would run with it regardless of how bad it is just for the look itself
Siluria at 4th is outrageous. You can literally kill everything with the art weapon with zero efforts.

Can't believe you promoted bloodhound step at all. It should be shamed at all times. All the sweats use royal knights resolve, flame strike, storm stomp, and a few others. Though that is for pvp.
Silurias tree dose more poise damage than the lance and tree spear, I think.
I also feel that, even with R1s you feel that you do more poise damage Siluria's than with other options.

Geart Spears are to be best used with great shields (fingerprint stone shield to be specific which requires 50 strength) so i think lance would be best of all.
With the build, why do you have the spear talisman if you aren’t using a shield? I might be wrong, but don’t u need a shield for that?
Counterattacks are any thrust damage received when attacking, so poising through attacks with spears works as well.

@@notsubatomic2065 You don't have to take damage for it to work, they just need to be in counterattack frames, they can miss-especially due to a Spear's longer range, or simply never connect because your thrust came out faster and interrupted them, such as with the speed of a Thrusting Sword, or you can of course do it by poising through or shield poking while they're attacking, too. It works for all Pierce damage-Pierce is a type of Physical damage, don't expect any boosts to elemental damage-so, since it works on all Pierce damage, it works on the Pickaxe and Rusted Anchor, too, and the Zweihander's R2s, if you're interested in choosing the path of poise.
The spear talisman increases counterattack damage by 13%, I don't know how much base counterattacks do, but in prior games it was 30% ish.

So really our only universally usable great spear is the lance, which to be fair is a good weapon, but is heavily lacking in the Elden Bling Department

The only thing i disagree with here is the fact that you have 40 in every stat when covering a weapon like the serpent-hunter, that scales so poorly in dex that you need to put like 2-3 points in for 1 damage bonus. The test would've been better if it was 80 strength. And the fact that its one of 2 great spears that does pure physical damage is great. Split damage weapons tend to do less damage due to said split.

Big fan of ur channel but the Great Spear review didn’t age well at all. Serpent Hunter is one of the best weapons in the game w/ an incredible moveset and you basically dismiss it as a gimmick weapon. Vikes War Spear is absolutely viable in PVE as it does fire damage and can be buffed like crazy. The Madness status effect is most def a PvP thing but the weapon is really good for PvE especially w/ the horizontal R2’s. And the Siluria’s Tree AoW is an absolutely monster and one of the best in the game. It’s way better than the Tree Spear. Back then you seemed to be way too hung up on a weapons overall AR. And it seems like every weapons AoW is overpriced in your opinion regardless of the ridiculous damage like Mohg’s Spear. Who cares what the FP cost is when it just melts everything in front on you. Still interesting to look back and see how perceptions of the weapons have evolved.
How are you getting every weapon to max level? Must be buying shards or cheat menuing
