I love this scene!! It's great. My Great Uncle Herman Dykestra a sergeant in the 101 Airborne dropped into the Netherlands during WW2. It helped he spoke Dutch and Friesian. Cheers from Milwaukee Wisconsin 🇺🇲🧀🍻
That was Geoff, in the Spitfire. Ex RAF and a test pilot on Hunters who retired and did some film work. I knew him in his eighties and he was still flying. Within the film then this is true, though.
I knew the guy who flew this scene. Geoff was a test pilot and did film work. He was still flying in his eighties. He did a few passes but Richard Attenborough wanted it lower. Lower he got. Apparently Dickie jumped off the scaffold tower where the cameras were filming in fear of his life.
I've often wondered why, when reconnaissance had spotted this panzer group, a squadron of Typhoons wasn't sent in afterwards. Could have made a difference to the outcome of the operation.
If ever there was a great symbol of freedom It has to be seeing a SPITFIRE screaming across the sky the pilot is properly only 5 to 6 years older than cyclist
The kid? No, you see him later with his parents at there apartment. They were in the Dutch resistance. Later in this scene you see him smuggling documents hidden in his bike handle bars past German guards. It's a great Movie, great theme, great opening.
Imagine the German soldiers directly watching him waving at a Spitfire. Hans with a cigarette in his mouth, K98 in his hand: Well, I know who to shoot now.

Friesian are cows, he spoke Friese which is only spoken in the North of the country and not in Gelderland and Brabant.

Does that wave maneuver from the spitfire have a name?
Wing Waggle.
Looks like a Mark IX Spitfire.
