      If you're struggling with the lasso tool, try using the pen tool. Once you you got what you want to select, right click and then "make selection", you'll get smoother results

      Steady hand, comes with practice

    • @Mendrawza24
      @Mendrawza24 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Back in the day, it was just practice, and/or lassoing a larger or smaller area, and then expanding or diminishing the selection area under the options.
      But honestly, just use the magic wand. Especially in CSP.

Your tutorals and artwork have been such a huge inspiration and I really want to tip my hat to you for helping me get where I am today in the industry as a character concept artist. Wouldn't be here without you. You'll always be my favourite artist.

    for my own sake:
    layer 1: sketch the anatomy
    layer 2: sketch in the clothing and folds
    layer 3: line art
    next part is to separate each different colour used into its own layer grouping, and make a separate layer per group for:
    midtones
    shadows
    gradient
    highlight
    then add details to where needed, such as the face,
    and finally alpha lock the line art and change the colour where needed/desired.
    hope others find this useful as well.

    The gradient maps/ gradient layer has carried my rendering the past few years, it’s also a good way to add some easy metallics like you were rendering by really reflecting the environment, helps with some effect passes or when doing really shiny materials

    I study full time at college and work on projects, so I don't have much time to draw, which makes me very sad... mainly because drawing has been my biggest passion since childhood. Your videos help me keep that desire to think about drawing even if I can't due to time and tiredness, every now and then I go back to some classes to remember how to do certain things or just to feel that "desire" to draw! I love your videos, thank you very much for keeping the artist's soul inside me.

      He uses a separate layer marked purple to add gradient shadows. This gives more depth and clarity to the shadows. He uses a lasso tool to achieve a hard edge on one side and a softer edge on the other to create a more realistic look. srry if u dont understand not rlly good with explaining.

    I notice that in order to pick proper colors for the drawing you go in a diagonal towards the upper left corner and for shadows towards the bottom right corner. I think it's a nice technique to pick the proper shading colors for all those color flats that we keep wondering if using a single color set to multiply over them or just go out of our comfort zone and start color picking.

    Hey Marc, thanks for this video; it really helped answer a lot of questions I had with an earlier colour process video you did re: using separate layers for flats, and clipping masks! Couple of remaining questions if you wouldn't mind indulging me:
    1. what's the purpose of the Inner Shadow Layer FX you use on your main silhouette layer (when working with your painted values technique)?
    2. When flatting, do you turn off anti-aliasing for a really crisp selection?

    • @YTartschool
      @YTartschool  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      🔥
      1. just style choice, I like the silhouette to be well defined

    • @Ha-neulie
      @Ha-neulie 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not Marc (and I hope he posts a tutorial relating to this soon), but a tip to hold you out for a while is that metallic materials are super shiny. You can use the blackest blacks and the whitest whites (in their respective areas, of course) and you're pretty much set.
      Adding reflections of color like the sky or the scenery around the metallic object will add to the shiny and hard effect.
      Medieval armor, however, won't have super pushed shading, but the process is very similar. First, you pick your shadow color, then add bounce light, reflective colors (grass, the sky, hair, etc), and finally, highlights.
      Here's to hoping Marc makes a tutorial for this! I'm still learning myself tbh haha
