"It has a banjo and it's a murder ballad. What kind of music is this?" IT'S BLUEGRASS! THIS IS BLUEGRASS! Banjos & fiddles & murder ballads are the iconic sound of bluegrass!
More specifically, this is what we in Appalachia call "newgrass". It's the hipper, newer version of a classical old sound. :)

The song is about someone whose wife is cheating on them, and they decide to shoot both the wife and the sancho and then kill themselves. They all are going to hell as sinners but at least they will have company there. The lyric that communicates this clearly is, "After I count down three rounds(bullets) In hell ill be in good company."
It's so cool y'all chose to react to this. Glad to be on this journey seeing you both expanding your appreciation for all types of music. Keep up the great work. Shout out from the 719!

I dont think it was a cheating wife! Its just a very toxic and abusive relationship. After they have an argument things get abusive their love couldnt go no further push n shoved theyre bruised and battered so he says oh lord i aint coming home sorry im taking this bitch out she stabbed me with a knife thats stuck through my shoulder lord! shes got to go dead wife is what i already told her! so after he counts down 3 rounds 2 for the wife.. pop! pop! ..you gotta make sure shes dead man the 2nd round is an insurance round for the wife cus after the 3rd round ..pop! he cant come back to finish her off if she survives one round! lol And the 2 of them get to live out eternity together in hell and in good company! Eternal toxic realationship could you imagine any worse kind of hell than that? Especially a well fed ugly ass country red headed wifey lol yuck! blah 🤣Now im gonna have nightmares of being trapped in a walmart with a sea of cankles and moo moo dresses everywhere! ahhhhh

We call this music "Southern Gothic" It's a darker form of folk, bluegrass and country music that has been around for a while but is rarely ever played on the radio. Some folks say it was inspired by the writing genre of the same name. If you google Southern Gothic Music and scroll down the rabbit hole through the pages you'll find more about it and the artists that play in it. Another band I really like that does this same sort of thing is called The Heavy Horses. Those Poor Bastards and Old Crow Medicine Show are good examples also. You might have heard a cover of Old Crow's song Wagon Wheel that was done by Darius Rucker a while back.

It's literally a song about a double-murder suicide when a guy catches his wife cheating on him.
    He just breaks.
Dead love couldn't go no further (because his entire perception of the relationship was shattered in the moment he saw her)
Proud of, and disgusted by her (because she was able to snare this other guy)
Push, shove, a little bruised and battered (referencing the confontation)
Oh Lord, I ain't coming home with you (because he knows he just crossed a line and heaven ain't on the docket anymore)
My life's a bit more colder (coming down from the murders, realizing he just killed the person he cares about the most)
Dead wife is what I told her (self-explanatory)
Brass knife sinks into my shoulder
Oh babe, don't know what I'm gonna do (grief and guilt-motivated suicidal ideation here)
Then we get to Danny's lines
I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee, my squeeze
    The stage it smells, tells
Hell's bells, miss-spells, knocks me on my knees
It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt, hang me on a tree
After I count down three rounds, in Hell I'll be in good company
All of this is simply him taking in the scene of the struggle that went down, the aftermath of killing his wife and her lover, and saying, fuq it. I'm going to hell, but at least she'll be there too.
Very dark song, yeah, but cleverly arranged and presented. And quite the earworm. This isn't my usual genre by any mark but this song was stuck in my head for WEEKS after I first heard it.

I always understood “folk” to be an umbrella term like “jazz” or “rock” and blue grass is a type of folk, Americana is, country, even campfire songs are folk. I picture folk music as being any kind of music you can imagine being played on a back porch. Folk is not anything that requires electricity synthesizers, speakers or sound studios, just musicians and their instruments making music together…

Just last week I found out that The Dead South is from the province over from where I live (I live a couple hours south of Calgary, Alberta). The Dead South even compelled me to post one of their songs on my Facebook. The song is You Are My Sunshine, a rendition from the song my mama used to sing to me as a child. Somehow, the Dead South were able to make that cheery song into a real dark, lover scorned song. That one you might be interested in =)

Note that he's got the chello up on his hip, this is the precursor to the blues guitar. Before they created the "electric bass" which looks like a turn-of-the-century torture device with electricity. And it worked well. But this was how they did it back in the day. Then to pull in that Appalachian influence, just rounds out this weird bluegrass/folk thing. It's deviously brilliant.

In a similar vain as "The Aristocrats" is a community theme among comedians, in a few music genres the "Murder Ballad" is a tradition. Country and Bluegrass are two of them. You can look at Johnny Cash's "Deliah's Gone" as another example. This is a play on the the Murder Ballad. And is what the lyrics are describing.
If you're looking for some more examples of hybrid Bluegrass, where the Bluegrass is up front but blends other styles, here are a few I'd recommend:

The Haunted Windchimes: Out With The Crow

Bluegrass is characterized by acoustic instruments with one instrument playing the melody, and the others harmonizing around it. Common instruments used are guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and bass. Sometimes the melody is traded off between instruments. Vocals are typically sung in multi-part harmony with the highest voice singing a dissonant harmony with the melody.

I love these guys. They're really fun. My grandson looks like the brown guy and a couple of years ago he was really excited to see this video and compare his looks! My best friend married a Mexican man from the Midwest and he sounded like a country boy. It was a little awkward, (since I'm from E.L.A) meeting this man who looked like me but spoke with a country twang. hahaha. Anyway, it was cool watching you two react to The Dead South. Thanks, as usual!

This is one of my favorite songs. I love the Dead South, their catchiness and uplifting rhythm/melody as well as their look. the thin guys high voice, the bearded fellows low and all the hidden "jokes" in the scenes..
If you are not afraid from a lot of meaning being hidden in the scenes then there is a band that does this in their songs, which are in Russian, but have descent Captions in English. It would be interesting to see your thoughts if you have not previously done that for ska type of music - th-cam.com/video/1ugivNRYfjc/w-d-xo.html

Loving the diversity of music y'all are checking out. You should look into the band "King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard" for some awesome psychadellic, funk, rock kinda jams. They're all over the place as far as genres go with each of their albums. But a good place to start would be a single "Gila Monster" from their upcoming album, as well as "Slow Jam 1" & "Shanghai" for some more chill vibes. Love the content boys keep up the good work!

I can’t believe you are doing a reaction to one of my favourite bands - and one of my favourite of their songs. They are the epitomy of cool . I think the cello player ( who is a dead ringer for my nephew btw) is actually a architect but cont to play with the band- I read that somewhere . They are so cool. I love the step dance .
