This week was a blast! I heard a rumor of a very productive abandoned mine not far from Cerro Gordo, so I decided to take a hike!
ALSO - I wrote a book! I have been working on this for almost two years now and I am SO excited to finally announce it. I put my put my heart and soul into this thing and really dug deep on making sense of these past 3+ years living up here. The book has all sorts of new stories, insights, and history of the town. Very entertaining and interesting video, but hardly a discovery as the coordinates and even a photo can be found on the Mindat site.
@@Ohtaror A photo and coordinates are nothing like being there. Don't downplay something you have not done.
@@californiasun5866 taking a photo is exactly being there, how else would the photo be taken? Don't get me wrong, it was a very entertaining watch and once again a well told 'story' , there is a reason for his (well-earned) near 2M subscribers. Yet, it's not a discovery as such and either he doesn't know the great information source that is Mindat, or he does and he spun the story a bit for entertainment purposes. Doesn't really matter, but right is right.
@@Ohtaror But you didn't take the picture, thus you have no real idea of what it is like to hike there and find such things. It is like being shown a picture of a beautiful woman. It is nothing like meeting her in person. To see her in three dimensions not just two. You have to be there to experience such things, all things.
Even Brent telling you what it is like, does nothing to let you feel it for yourself. You have to get out of your chair to experience life.
I’ve been climbing for 15 years and would consider myself a strong climber. I’ve sent multiple 13’s but typically hover around the 11-12 range and wouldn’t even consider climbing up those walls without gear and a partner. Never underestimate a highly featured wall. I’ve seen some gnarly accidents and lost a friend to a similar situation. No matter how confident a climber you are, you’re only one mistake from death. Stay safe out there and thanks for the amazing content.
The biggest don't,would be the season right now too much show slippery ice. Believe it or not the best chance of climbing a wall like that during the summer of course is barefooted, keep your boots with you.

When hiking in areas were indigenous people previously lived I look for areas that I find pleasant where I'd want to hang out and then look for artifacts like arrowheads and such. Found quite a few arrowheads and tools in this way. The indigenous people have much more history than the minors in these areas. And both histories are very interesting. I think the native Americans along the Sierras spent the Summers at higher elevations where it was cooler and of course in the winter would go down to the valleys where it was milder. Great content!
You are living a dream Brent. Instead of working your whole life to aquire stuff that doesn't really matter, you get to DO amazing stuff every day... that brings fullfillment, joy and a passion for living.. I only get to take trips to do stuff like that, you get to live it daily.. Thanks for another great video. Peace

Brent, u should buy several salt blocks and stage them around your property. That will bring the big horn sheep to u.
A satellite phone should be a must but unfortunately they are of no use underground and that’s the part of his adventures that concerns me the most. I would hope he has a plan in place and people know exactly where he is going and the time frame he’s going to be there EVERY single time he goes off on an adventure especially if there’s a chance he might underground or might be in a vulnerable position.

I really can not imagine being a miner back in the day. Producing and moving a ton of good high grade material has to be so much work in such a small and confined area. Very impressive men!

I've been watching this channel since 2020 and everytime you go on these awesome hikes, it inspires me to get off my backside and get outside myself! lol but in all seriousness thank you for what you do, such a great channel! The last few seconds of this video made me wonder if you do any astronomy or if there are any types of plans for an observatory of sorts (within reason). The location seems great with a high location and dark sky, seeing the milky way must be a great experience every night and having a telescope would make it even more of a excellent experience!

I just want you to know that your videos light my soul on fire. I was a young man in the Marine Corps in 29 palms for 4 years. I used to hike and sleep on the ground in ancient lands. We would go to places paces on base that hadn’t seen a person in 60 years and would sleep under the stars. I’ve seen desert tortoises in their burrows. If I was only cognizant enough to realize the beauty of where I was! We were all too focused on how hard the training was and how hot it was. I’m sure I could have found some petroglyphs if I would have looked around. Been to Joshua tree a couple times since and loved it. Drive up the coast and got a flat tire in lone pine. Beautiful land out there. Anyway, Brent if you’re reading this, the scenery in your videos give me butterflies and make me feel great. I miss the quiet wind of the desert.
Crazy idea but since you are trying to grow your own food with the gardens and bring back some of the wild life in the area up on the hill, you should also like once a week plant a new pine tree (or whatever trees drop the pine cones). Maybe start getting some of the trees around Cerro Gordo to start coming back?

I moved to Tonopah NV after high school in 85. On weekends we would explore the mountains of the high desert. We found some amazing places miles from paved roads. Even ran across an old prospector still out there. Your living the dream of freedom and exploration! Thank You for chronicling this and sharing it with everyone!

Great hike, but it worries me that you are doing this solo. When I do hike solo, I carry a Spot gen 3 gps tracker. That way, somebody always knows where I am. I hope to visit you some day. Stay safe!

This was cool to see. So often when I think of the "desert" I think of areas like what's immediately around Cerro Gordo with mostly just low scrub grasses and no real large vegetation, but the areas you found after the charcoal camp with larger trees growing back really opened my eyes that there can still be actual large trees, they just take MUCH longer to grow because of how dry everything is.
You're right about the camera not showing the steep grade . I climbed Mt Shasta and our pictures didn't do it justice...😮love the hiking vids....

He only makes one video every 3-4 weeks, so it's better to just subscribe and then see the dot when there's a new video. It will fall out of the feed algorithm within a week if there isn't constant videos.

Have you considered bringing in a company that does Lidar to map the mountains? I bet stripping away the vegetation layer would reveal a lot of lost workings and structures.

It really is hard to convey how BIG the US is to anyone who has never been here. I was teaching some lovely women English when I lived in Japan, and the disbelieving wonder when I told them it would take at least a week of 6-8 hour days of driving at 120-130kph on the highway to drive from New York City to Los Angeles. The highest speed limits on that island were 60kph on the tollway. It does explain the American sense of scale a bit though.

I would love to see an episode with you and Les Stroud, i know he is more a survivalist but a lot of what you do every day is similar to what he does just not in a life or death situation it feels very much like he would love it at Cerro Gordo.

You should have a way of marking the entrance of a mine you enter, so rescuers know where to look if you get caught behind a collapse or injured.

There's a lot of mines in Holcomb Valley behind BBC on the desert side, but I think USFS has closed most of them off. I've come across a few while offroading that are off the 38 kind of down in the valley between Sugarloaf and Heart Bar as well but again, USFS has closed them off or they've caved in. We have one in OC I've been hunting for with a drone, the Blue Light Mine, which is somewhere on the hill above the town of Silverado. Haven't found the entrance to it yet, I know it's closed off because 2 kids died due to drowning back in 2011. @@tsummz1073

This is one of the best channels on TH-cam! What a cool place. The history is awesome. Imagining these miners back in the day, backing breaking labor. Using mules teams to transport everything that went up there. The tonnage that they were able to move is amazing to me.

Imagine how beautiful the view WAS before they cut down all those huge trees. Quite big trees judging by the size of the stumps the trees were once attached to.
A Glaring example of desertification due to heavy hands of humans and how deforestation rushes all the water downhill to vanish into what we Now Know as "Death" Valley. Brent saying "Detoured by the stump forest" is a perfect explanation of how it all went down...

Agree w/ other commenters: You should a.) Go prepared with enough gear, food, lighting and protection from elements, b.) Go with other people, c.) go with the intent of surviving the adventure - be & stay safe!
If your ever go down a steep slope use a long staff. It makes it so. Much easier to go down. You will be able to go down standing up. Very safely. By the way wear a mask in the Mines.

I'm hoping you could do a few days hike to a mine and camp out each night. Just not in the winter.. I know it gets cold all year long in the desert at night especially in winter. That way you'd have more time to document what you find.

The most current video is a true gem as Brent gets a visit from Jean Ray Kendrick (ne Adams). Her father, Ralph Adams, ran Cerro Gordo in the late 1940s to the early 1950s, when Jean Ray was a young girl and teenager. Her stories are precious and her enthusiasm contagious!
While that video also ends on a sad note, I'm grateful for her stories that offer us a glimpse into the past of this mining town 🙏🏼⭐

I love the scenic views, Brent, as you walk along the trails or as you forge new trails. Maybe one day youll see your Bighorn. My best friend and I were hiking in the San Rafael Desert on this absolutely stunning day and came around a bend...and Froze! Because, there standing on a low rock outcropping not more than 10 yards in front of us as it looking down at us, was a Desert Bighorn Sheep Ram. He had this huge set of curled horns and he was majestic! He took our breath away. The desert was so silent as well, no birds or insects could be heard. It was like time stood still. It seemed as if we stood there looking at him for about an hour, but probably wasn't more than 10 minutes. I didnt want to spook him by taking a picture of him. Eventually, he seemed to bow his head, and scampered up the rocky slope and over the top of the hill. I will never forget this encounter and neither would my friend. So, i think, eventually one day, you will see your Bighorn.
