My mother named me....Mimi. I grew up hearing her sing this Wonderful mans song. A sweet Special song for me. When I was Little I daydreamed of meeting him Someday...Maurice, is special to me.
Such fun. Although I am no great Chevalier fan, he made three (out of four) very good movies with Jeanette MacDonald. This was one of them. Thanks for sharing.
I am in agreement with you on this. I have yet to fully understand his megastardom, partly because he sang the same way when he was elderly and his moment had passed. The subtlety he exhibits in facial expression while being 'borderline incorrigable' seemed to bridge silent and early sound eras.

The ridiculous lyrics and his expressions are laugh out loud funny. Movies need such expressive faces, even the lead parts. Being good looking simply isn't good enough.
Actually, Pepe Le Pew is an amalgam of Charles Boyer (who was Pepe Le Moko in Algiers and the original Pepe Le Moko movie in France; you can tell because Mel Blanc's voice for Pepe is based on Boyer's) and Maurice Chevalier (the singing, the suggestive asides, the sexually carefree attitude. This one isn't as obvious because most have never seen a pre-Code Chevalier movie. Plus, the Charles Boyer vibes from Pepe are stronger). And who's Jean Gabin?
it's not that clear ... he was entertaining French POWs. He was eventually acquitted by a French court, but the story is more complicated (in a bad way) than this.
I read _he agreed to donate his proceeds from the Casino (over 1 million francs) to French prisoners of war, and he also sang at the camp where he himself had been a prisoner in WWI, in exchange for 10 prisoners being freed_ but I am certain tabloids know better
It´s amazing how much nonsense People can talk. Pierre Dac, a French "Entertainer" who was safe in London read in a G E R M A N newspaper that Chevalier was among the Artists who went to sing in Germany and accused Chevalier to have collabarated with the Nazis and Dac told that nonsense in Radio London. What really happened: Chevalier who was a POW in Germany during WW 1 made a deal with the Germans: He would go to Germany to sing in that same POW camp he was hold in WW 1 for FRENCH POWs . In return the Germans would release 10 French POWs. So Chevalier did NOT collaborate, he did sing in Germany for FRENCH POWs and he did free 10 POWs by doing so. In France he made not one single movie in Paris during the whole war. He lived with his JEWISH girlfriend and protected her and her Family. He was offered to go to Hollywood at the beginning of WW 2 , Lubitsch offered him a new contract in Hollywood, Chevalier declined telling Lubitsch he cannot leave France in such hard times. Chevalier acted absolutely great and it is bad that horrible People like Pierre Dac told those lies About Chevalier and it is also worse that still today People repeat Dac´s nonsense instead of checking Things before acussing inocent People of having commited crimes they never did. In Frech tv there were docus in the 1960s with interviews of French POWs who confirmed Chevaliers Version. So it is well knows what really happened and there is no excuse to call him a "Divine Nazi Collaborator".
A truly awesome and heartwarming musicial, and oh, that ending! Among my favorite film musicals and near the top.
My mother named me....Mimi.

Special song for me. When I was

Someday...Maurice, is special to me.
International musical stars like Mr. Chevalier don't exist anymore. The last one I can think of was Julio Iglesias. Noone since that I can think of.
Always enjoy Jeanette and Maurice together. Especially in the "Merry Widow."❤🎉
CHEVALIER...was my Great Uncle...my Father's Mother's brother
will hughes you have a talented family.
He was also my dogs neighbors nephews uncles cousins brothers mothers son!
He was Awesome Never Missed his Movies and have some old Lp's of him singing!
Oh sure
He was also my great uncle, on my father's side!💙
When he says "you know I'd like to have a little son of a Mimi", the way he does it is hilarious :D
The name of this wonderful film is "Love Me Tonight".
M. Chevalier at his playful best.
Thanks for posting this... like the Maurice Chevalier Remembered group on Facebook too. :)
Chevalier had a fascinating life. If you haven't read his biography, then you should.
I've just ordered one. It's on the way!
He could have sung the telephone book and it would have been a smash hit.
Just like Alan Rickman could've made a two-hour movie reading the telephone book, and there would've lines wrapped around the theater.
Agreed🎉🎉🎉

Such Gallic charm!
Now that's what a call a serenade😍
That smile, Janette just out of this world
Happy birthday Maurice ;)
Chevalier would have been 44 years old here!
I wish Nelson Eddy Sings This Song to Lovely Jeanette Macdonad in This Film.
Maurice Chevalier was never anything but absolutely charming, would that I could have been so.
I wish this movie was better overall.
Had a nice ending.

So this is how they used to shoot their shot.
🥺😍
Except perhaps for Gabrielle Coco Chanel.
pepe le pew
+kemchobhenchod - Pepe was actually inspired by Jean Gabin, in the movie Pepe Le Moko (1938). Check out the fluffy hair!

Jean Gabin was only the best French film actor of all time, that's all.
Asshole.
The most DIVINE Nazi Collaborator, n'est-ce pas?
N'est-ce pas. He was vindicated of the accusations. He was, however, a POW for two years during WWI, held captive by the Germans.
