  • Three years from planting to first harvest. Asparagus lives for decades, so choose your planting area carefully. You will dig trenches- either one long one or several to make a bed. Trenches are twelve inches deep and crowns are spaced eight to ten inches apart. If you make a “bed” rather than a long row, give yourself four feet between rows. Keep pathways mulched.
Gather up lots of composted manure. Place one layer of composted manure in the trenches and set the crowns on top of it. Fill In garden soil over the crowns and firm soil. In about a week the first spouts will emerge. Cover them with more composted manure and then soil to completely bury them. Continue this process until trench is filled; alternating composted manure and layers of garden soil, each time the little Asparagus shoots emerge, until the area is again level with the garden soil. By the end of Summer mulch the plants with more composted manure and layer of straw to keep weeds out.
Asparagus crowns can be either male or female. The females will flower and produce red fruit. You can save these small fruits for growing more plants…BUT ! Don’t let them sprout in the row or bed as this will “overcrowd” the plants. (Why I said even baby Asparagus is a weed in a “crown planted” row). Start your Asparagus seeds in pots if you want to grow them.
🍂After the Autumn frost kills the Asparagus ferns and the ground is frozen, cut and remove the dried stalks then top dress the row with more compost and fresh layer of straw. In the Spring be vigilant with removing any weeds before adding more compost and fresh straw.
Though it’s tempting to 😋harvest some fresh Asparagus in year two, be patient and wait till year three so the plants are fully established. 🤔Why you ask is this done? Look closely at the leaves on the Asparagus, they are VERY tiny; not much 🌿area for photosynthesis, which is how a plant grows and makes food. By providing rich soil and allowing the crowns to establish and thrive, your investment in time will be deliciously rewarded for years to come.
Every year afterwards, add more composted manure and mulch and keep the weeds out. In the Autumn after frost remove the brown Asparagus ferns and any weeds, then add mulch for their cozy Winter nap. 👩🏻‍🌾🧤Thanks for watching 👍🏼
