  • This was a train wreck of a film from start to finish. I hope filmmakers that seek to make movies based upon the Bible can learn from the mistakes that this movie made.

My mom and I went to go see the movie Noah together, and half way through the movie I couldn't take it anymore how misrepresented the actual events were being portrayed. I even said to my mom "Did these people ever even READ the Bible?" You have to also take into account that is directed and written by an atheist Jew. Multiple of his movies criticize religion. Also, movies are movies, they are art and interpretations by the filmmakers. If people who went to see the movie had any knowledge of Darren Aronofsky they would have known what they were walking into.

I think a lot of Christians are missing the point of the movie. I am a Christian and I understand that Hollywood never does a good job when it comes to staying biblical. However, there are 3 great themes in this movie in my perspective.
    1) I love the idea that God might have chosen a man who wasn't actually perfect and he was sometimes misunderstanding what God was telling him. He was frustrated with God because God was silent, and that he did the best he could with what he knew. At one point he says something like "God didn't choose me because I was righteous, he chose me because he knew I would do the task he assigned me." This is the classic religious belief that we must do something that seems wrong for a greater good. This is why Christians throughout history have murdered and destroyed and done terrible things in the name of God. But in the end it turned out that God had chosen Noah for another reason. Not because he did everything perfect, not because he would just do whatever God said, but because Noah had love in his heart and had a desire to do right beyond the law: to have mercy.
    2) As for the idea that Hollywood is pushing a green agenda with this movie, there is another way you can see this. Noah thought it was all about the innocent animals (just like a lot of preservationists do) but then we see that God does have a larger vision for the earth and mankind. The point of creation was not just for 'mother nature', nor was it for man to pillage. God wanted relationship with his people and stewardship of the earth.
    3) There's the idea that God co-creates with us. Noah had the choice whether to continue the line of man or not. I think that is so cool. God doesn't just make us robots. We have freewill and He is somehow creatively using our freewill to sync with his purposes.
It's too bad when people get offended by something and are unable to see the good. It's especially a bummer to me when Christians cannot find something worthy of praise in art. I'm not defending the biblical accuracy of this movie, but if you watch it with an open mind, I think you can find some pretty amazing themes and reasons to walk away blessed.

But the movie also goes into some detail of the watchers from the book of enoch, even providing their names but left out some very inportant details about how they mingled with the daughters of men and had children offspring that aren't man nor angel but something in between. Absolute abominations, wicked and vile. But in this blockbuster movie the watchers were the ones that cared for humanity. When you have opened eyes you start realizing this is satanic propaganda.

Either Fallen Angels or The Watchers from The Book of Enoch. The Watchers were described as a sort of lesser Angel, still appear with Human like bodies and feathered wings on their backs. The Watchers in The Book of Enoch were tasked to watch over Humanity, but they grew interested in the day to day lives of Humanity and also found the human women beautiful. A Watcher, whose name I forget, then decided he wanted to go down to Earth to do what the human men do, find a woman and have children, but he didn't want his brother Watchers to be punished so he made sure if there was punishment for leaving only he would be given it. But this inspired the other Wacthers to follow him nonetheless and vowed to accept the punishment together. When they left they were never allowed to return, but they succeeded in what they wanted and they all had children with human women. These children were the Nephilim, Giants who supposedly stood 450 ft tall and were aggresive.

In the Cain and Abel story Cain becomes jealous of his brother. He sees it as unfair that his family is receiving blessings that he isn't receiving and he responds by harming his own family. When Ham was complaining to Noah that his brother had a wife to share a life with, whereas he didn't. I thought they were setting up a story where Cain would essentially be Gollum to Ham's Frodo, or Anakin to his Luke etc. someone who serves as a cautionary tale for the hero of the story when they face a similar test. Ham's brother would be blessed with a wife and children, and Ham would feel tempted to harm his family out of jealousy.....and wouldn't you know it, later on in the movie the motivation to harm his brother's children does come up....but it involves a character other than Ham.
take the conflict of one feeling resentful about not receiving blessings that his brother is receiving. Then take the conflict about whether his brother's family should be killed to end humanity, and have both those feelings involve ONE character. A character who uses the issue of ending humanity as JUSTIFICATION to harm his family, when in part he's driven by feelings of jealousy. That way when Ham doesn't kill his own family, it's not only a matter of him seeing the value of humanity, but overcoming his feelings of jealousy and doing what Cain couldn't, which would bring everything full circle and tie all conflicts together. Instead, all the themes of the movie are presented in a way that feels unfocused and unrelated.

As a conservative Christian, I don’t agree with and barely understand any of these criticisms. It has a good, relatively pro-Christian message, it’s well-made from a technical standpoint and well acted, and it’s interesting. Yeah it goes full fantasy but so what? From a movie standpoint, this creates a compelling arc for Noah and interesting issues for the other characters. From a Bible/Christian standpoint, again it takes a lot of liberties with the lore but it’s not a “bad” anti-Christian message. It ends with yes a pro-environment message but also that people can be good by following God and simply being “better” people. Noah’s “villain” part of the story is simply part of his character arc and he ends up being the father of the rest of the world. I watched this movie knowing full well it wasn’t accurate and I loved it as a movie and as a Christian. It never said it was a “Christian” movie like those cliche Gods Not Dead movies and the like, it told its own story that simply pulled from some universally compelling source material from the Bible that is interesting for Christians and Atheists alike. Besides that, the final shot is literally God watching over Noah and his family as they start to repopulate the world, which is thematically consistent with both the Bible and the movie. I really can’t disagree more with this review

It actually gave me the idea that since the Bible is entirely arbitrary, anyway, and fully fictitious, why not make up all kinds of fake stories, loosely based off of something from the Bible.
We always do that with fictitious stories, and we should all feel free to do it.
Even amongst Christians, you have an almost endless ability to disagree with each other so perceptions are all we have, and perspectives are all we have. If you don't agree with my perspective, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I’m a Christian who has seen this movie, and I’m sure everyone here is gonna disagree with me, but I thought it was a really entertaining and inspiring movie despite it being not biblically accurate. Everyone is saying “That’s not from the book” and stuff, but this movie was not trying to tell a biblically accurate story. This movie is Hollywood making a movie about the flood so they added a lot of drama and figurative stuff and monsters and all sorts of things. And they added drama between the characters and. But again they weren’t trying to necessarily lie about it they were simply using the flood story or Noah’s ark story as a rough outline to make a movie. I know this movie is not what Christian audiences were expecting, but I thought it was just as entertaining as the biblically accurate story, and not to mention the story here was well developed. Lots of Christians seem to hate this movie, but I feel like they only dislike it because it’s not biblically accurate, and honestly, I find that kind of sad because this movie has a good story and some of the messages in this movie can be relatable to some people. From what I see, because of how biblically inaccurate it was, the movie was able to make a lot of great points in the messages told. Some are very relatable to people who follow God. It sure was for me. In conclusion, I found this movie very entertaining and inspiring despite it being not biblically accurate. It kept me engaged from start to finish. The messages are very inspiring, the story was very well developed, CGI is also incredible, and the execution of the film itself is very good to me! Now my opinions about this movie don’t apply to every Bible story, because some stories have to stay true to the scriptures because those stories are already developed and don’t need to be changed. An example of this is the story of Moses. If you saw Exodus: Gods and Kings, you can definitely see how poorly the story was developed in an attempt to change it. Moses was an already developed story and didnt have to include so many changes. In fact, it could have been a cinematic masterpiece, even if some of the new ideas they added to story, along with their epic CGI, if they had just stayed true to the book of Exodus.

In principle, I don't have an issue with trying to use the basic idea of biblical stories as a springboard for what is essentially biblical fan fiction. That doesn't have to be a huge insult especially if the messaging of that fan fiction is consistent with the messaging of its source. My issue is that the movie didn't use the meaning behind its source properly. Just as an example, they put tons of emphasis on the Cain and Abel story, to the point where it's treated more as the origin of evil than original sin itself. But the movie fails to explain what exacty Cain's moral failing was...Yeah okay he killed his own brother. Pretty self evident why that's morally wrong, but what LEAD Cain to that point? The people writing this story didn't seem to take anything away from the Cain and Abel myth aside from "killing brother bad. Cain killed brother. Cain bad"
If they want to use a biblical story like the Cain and Abel story as inspiration to tell their own story, then that's fine, but they don't really expand on that story. That just make the most superficial possible nod to it.

I am not a super radical christian but this movie seriously disturbed me. I even doubtes myself I thought " did I miss something about this part of the BIble??" but no! the whole thing was completely twisted.
I don't know what is wrong with hollywood movies but it seems to be difficult to find a movie free from political propaganda. They completely destroyed and twisted in a very dark way a Bible story, to turn it somehow into climate change propagnda about how horrible we humans are and how we destroy earth and we should obey die or do anything just for the animals to live.
they turned Noah into a horrible psycho who wanna kill 2 newborn baby girls because humans are unworthy.
I was truly shocled about how bad this movie is. I always thougth if I have a son in the future I would call him Noah, the name of one of the most righteous man on earth who believed in miracles and trusted God.
I don't know, it was just very disturbing to expect as you say a clean movie, and find that creepy stuff almost completely unrelated to the Bible.
But then when they do the Lion King, they make sure they are so faithfull to the original

The problem with Enoch is that the second two 'chapters/books' of Enoch contradict many aspects of scripture about salvation. By reading scripture it seems to me that Noah wouldn't/ didn't assume God was done with humanity. I guess they were looking for some conflict rather than a boring boat ride... and a reason for why Noah got drunk.

when you said "noah was tasked to save the innocent, and by that the movie meant the animals", i had a thought: are the animals innocent? is it specified anywhere that the commandments should only apply to humans? if not, then animals kill each other all the time, steal one another's food, covet their neighbor's wife and would commit even more infractions if they had the ability to speak. So, to integrate this thought with this movie's logic, where animals are elevated to the same rank of subjects of God and would therefore be be ruled and judged in the same fashion as a human being would, Noah is not in fact saving the innocent by hoarding lions and all manner of sharp fanged and clawed creatures, is he? So, for the arc to make sense, the interpretation could not be the one opted for in the movie.
