Holy Crap!!! This is the really great stuff. Thank_________ for Tim Berne. Like Miles, this is years and years ahead. All of us can listen and learn!!!
And God Bless Sanborn too for inviting him (on there). Sanborn really plays some great sax, showing his roots with his teachers Roscoe Mitchell & Julius Hemphill.
a very interesting fact is that Sanborn and Berne shared the same teacher in Julius Hemphill, regardless of the different directions they pursued. They reunited in the studio for a tribute album Berne put together for Hemphill (Diminutive Mysteries), a fabulous fabulous recording.
wow intense stuff Tim Berne one of the avant jazz composer players , he can really write ! what period is this early 90's ? maybe the Caos Totale band Sanborn really blows on this one too !
+Polidoro Piletas Herb Robertson (trumpet), Mark Dresser (bass) but I don't know the guitarist. Tim has performed often with Marc Ducret, but that's someone else.
Hmm great composition, but trumpet and both sax solos don't do it for me. As an altosax player, I know how fantastic it feels to blow like that in a solo, but other than chaos, crazy and angry it doesn't say much.
@gomachols I agree with you on this for the most part, but "jazz' has always been about harmony. I don't think jazz owes anyone change just for the sake of change. At it's best, it's been functional music, meaning, it served a social function. A dance, a party, a funeral, a wedding, a bar.... But I'm with you on picking good notes!
Harmony is what killed classical music? I thought it was when people stopped having sex in the audience! As a matter of fact, jazz, funk and rock n' roll were styles of music that had euphemisms as genre names but are heading towards becoming museum music as well.
fucking great! so, i can for sure say baron on drums, mark dresser bass, herb robertson trumpet... do you know who the sax and guitar are? marc ducret when he had some hair?mmm...thanks for sharing, pity the sound and picture are a bit disynchronised, could be a great baron lesson!
Most of the guys who say they're playing "creative music" already have bread from their daddy or some sort of inheritance. We all need money in order to be alive to play the freakin' instrument. If you don't have a home, you can't play, if you don't have a meal in your stomach, you can't play. Playing crap that no one likes but you and five people at a brooklyn bar doesn't make you a creative musician. It just means you can afford play for no money.
John Scofield once said, "When you compare music, you lose the beauty of listening to any of it." And what on earth does this music have to do with race? Do your ears have to be a certain color to hear jazz? And Tim Berne is 'mediocre?" Nope, your typing is mediocre. You've "lost the beauty," dude.

thanks for posting. excellent. i LOVE Berne's music.
I was previously unfamiliar with Herb Robertson - that was the baddest trumpet solo I've heard in a very long time! Great video!
God Bless Tim Berne

The melody reminds me of same era Steve Coleman, but with a Joey Baron instead of a Marvin Smitty Smith or a Gene Lake rhythm section.
The young Herb Robertson WOW!!!
They were fun times! Touring constantly creating new music. Thanks Steve!
tim berne a dormi dans cette maison une nuit au début des années 80
Tim is playing solo on my dinner/concert series next month, february 26. Looking forward :)
Come see Tom Berne/Jim Black/Nels Cline at the Angel City Jazz Festival at the Ford Amphitheater in LA on 10/3.
Ahh just great, all we need is Zorn in the mix...
Come back Tim Berne!!!
I can recognize David Sanborn & Tim Berne on sax and Joey Baron on drums, but who are the rest please?
+Polidoro Piletas Herb Robertson (trumpet), Mark Dresser (bass) but I

Can someone list who all these musicians are? I'm especially wondering who that trumpet player is. He is awesome to listen to.

Herb Robertson if I'm not mistaken.
Sanborn always said he wasn't a jazz musician. It's too bad, though... he can play.

@BennOliverr
Well I guess you´re an American so, you would say something like that. It's expected.
This was very "cutting edge." In 1965.
Americans... Gotta give them they're music at least... No values, abuses to the world, but good music though... Shit, really good musiacians too.

Charles Gayle begs to differ.
I need to run away from this page
Ah, so this is why people hate saxophones.
