Mark Urban joins us to share the gripping story of the creation and development of the "Red Devils" - the name given to them by their German enemies - who ranged from circus performers to solicitors, policemen to gravediggers, Christians and Jews to communists.
Through the fates of six heroes, from recently-widowed Geoffrey Pine-Coffin, who had to leave his little boy to head to the front, to Mike Lewis, whose photographs became iconic images of war, Urban vividly brings to life these men and their experiences, showing what drove them and covering their daring actions at D-Day, Arnhem and across the Second World War. All six characters would shed blood for their country, two would not survive and one would face disgrace in the regiment.
Mark Urban is the Diplomatic Editor of BBC's Newsnight programme and was formerly defence correspondent for the Independent. He formerly served in the British Army, both in the Royal Tank Regiment and in the Territorial Army. He is the author of several books, including Task Force Black (his deep-dive look at the SAS in the Iraq War, which was a Sunday Times number one bestseller) and The Skripal Files, a Sunday Times Best Politics Book of 2018.

What a fabulous programme. I'm probably biased, as my late Dad was 'C' Coy 2nd Parachute Bn from shortly after Bruneval, through Tunisia, being wounded but getting back to 'C' Coy. & jumping into Sicily where he was more seriously wounded & taken prisoner. He enjoyed a full career in the Army, post War with 12th Bn (TA) as a PSI & with 23 SAS (TA) until 1972. We, his Family, are immensely proud of him & what he did. In 1960, as a CSM 12th/13th Bn he & his old OC, now Brig Johnny Frost were reunited when Brig Frost took over Command of 44 Independent TA Para Bde. Thank you Paul & Mark for a supetb evening's entertainment.

Very interesting production…..my father was in the Royal Artillery after being called up soon after the outbreak of the war. Recruiting staff called at their training base looking for volunteers to join the recently formed Airborne & he served in North Africa and Italy with the 1st Airlanding Regt. He was due to take part in the Arnhem landings, but the evening prior to take off he was summoned to the CO to be told that his brother had been killed in France (Black Watch)…..and since he already had a brother die earlier in the war (RAF) he was given a train pass and told to go home to Edinburgh and be with his parents.
He always reckoned that if the death message had not arrived when it did, he might well not have survived the Arnhem fighting, as his unit lost many men. He died in 1999 aged 88. I recall going to visit him in the Eighties, and found him quite emotional as he’d been watching a history programme on TV which showed footage of his unit, including his Major, Pat Lloyd , whom he greatly respected. I wonder if the book mentions Major Lloyd.

I enjoyed this show immensely, and I always believe in the Greco-Roman tradition of history that individuals always make history, not great events or movements. How people deal with the great tragedies of life is more important than the tragedies themselves.

Glad I watched the replay. What a great bunch of characters made up the "Red Devils." They all seem like the kind of blokes one would enjoy serving with, not that I would likely have ever "made the cut" I might add. Remarkable presentation by Mark Urban. I must get a copy of his book. I pressed all the likes I could and I hope it is of some help.

I can recall ,when I was in basic training there was a little fella ,one name that very quickly to our horror became a PT nightmare ..
Was a little Glaswegian called Cpl Mc'cloone I'm 5ft 7 and I had to look down at him ..
However he was one of the toughest little bastards I ever met ,and how this small man could sprint like a whippet … Jesus H Christ .
    Really great pod ,Brill stuff.

An excellent presentation on the origins of the British airborne. As always on WW2TV, I learned so much! I think it would be cool to have a show talking about the differences & similarities between US & UK airborne troops and operations.

The British forces of to day are going down the Para Commando route look at the new rangers Battalion for direction of travel The Problem the British Army still has is the Boy Browning attitude all Infantry Regts in the British army need to be at the Level of the Elite Three is no reason why they cant achieve the Red or the Green lid The problem i see is the Forces are hamstrung by Tradition ie the Household division having professional soldiers in red uniforms marching up and down is not the way to go its looks great for the Tourist but its not doing much for the stranded of the modem infantry solider who should be training to much higher standerd than they are today History has shown the way and we should be going that way in the 21 cent
