The band is A'Studio, the group that originally performed this song in 1998. Batyr Shukenov (who died in 2015) did the vocals. It has been said that Dimash did this song as a tribute to Shukenov (a fellow Kazakh). That would explain this zhoktau-like song (zhoktau = a song of weeping or lamentation, a memorial song done by Kazakhs). The lyrics tell the story of a love that is desolate, nearly without hope....a suitable topic for such a tribute to a fallen person. Then, there is Dimash's masterful use of gesture, posture, and voice, to bring life to the lyrics, to reinforce each phrase by his actions. Sinful Passion is stunning and ought to be considered one of Dimash's interpretive masterpieces. I could listen to it a hundred times in a day and never tire of it!

I listen to him every night since I came across his video this first week of March 2019. When he performs, he is transformed to this great passionate singer from a naive-looking, shy young man who seems to need protection and care.

The band is Studio-A, made up of Dimash's Kazakh friends. When I watched this video, my first reaction was that Dimash creates his own magnificent world of music, which we can only listen to and look at from the outside. But soon thereafter I realised that I can enter into that world -- and what a wonderful world it is. If you watch the video again, please, pay attention to the audience once Dimash has concluded, there is this white-shirted man, in the front row, who was the first to stand up and applaud. He is Igor Krutoy, the most prominent and celebrated Russian composer of contemporary music. He befriended with Dimash at that very occasion. Dimash and Maestro Krutoy have since then been collaborating and producing masterpieces after masterpieces: "The Love of Tired Swans" (which was elected the Song of the Year 2018 in Russia), "Mademoiselle Hyde", and "Ascolta la voce."

Excellent reaction, as always. This song combines lyrics and interpretation in very unique ways. It was written by Baigali Serkebayev, the guy on the keyboard. The band is A'Studio, the group that originally performed this song in 1998. Batyr Shukenov (who died in 2015) did the vocals. It has been said that Dimash did this song as a tribute to Shukenov (a fellow Kazakh). That would explain this zhoktau-like song (zhoktau = a song of weeping or lamentation, a memorial song done by Kazakhs). The lyrics tell the story of a love that is desolate, nearly without hope....a suitable topic for such a tribute to a fallen person.
Then, there is Dimash's masterful use of gesture, posture, and voice, to bring life to the lyrics, to reinforce each phrase by his actions. Sinful Passion is stunning and ought to be considered one of Dimash's interpretive masterpieces. I could listen to it a hundred times in a day and never tire of it!

Hi David. Thanks for the backgrounder on the song. I agree with you on this being considered as one of Dimash's interpretive pieces. I listen to him every night since I came across his video this first week of March 2019. When he performs, he is transformed to this great passionate singer from a naive-looking, shy young man who seems to need protection and care.
Very interesting to know the inspiration of an artist about a song, and also to know the history behind a song and most and formost the lirics.

Thank you, Lucia, for your appreciative comments on Dimash's performance in Sochi (Russia, August 2018) where he sang a song written by the pianist in this show. Dimash was invited to do so. The band is Studio-A, made up of Dimash's Kazakh friends. When I watched this video, my first reaction was that Dimash creates his own magnificent world of music, which we can only listen to and look at from the outside. But soon thereafter I realised that I can enter into that world -- and what a wonderful world it is. If you watch the video again, please, pay attention to the audience once Dimash has concluded, there is this white-shirted man, in the front row, who was the first to stand up and applaud. He is Igor Krutoy, the most prominent and celebrated Russian composer of contemporary music. He befriended with Dimash at that very occasion. Dimash and Maestro Krutoy have since then been collaborating and producing masterpieces after masterpieces: "The Love of Tired Swans" (which was elected the Song of the Year 2018 in Russia), "Mademoiselle Hyde", and "Ascolta la voce."

Great reaction to this wonderful song that Dimash sings with such finesse and passion. His technique is impeccable. He goes from a baritone voice to the highest notes with such ease.
