Welcome to Dimash World... You saw nothing yet,you are just scratching the surface. By the way,he didnt land a whistle (in my opinion),it that was super head ...Dimash has whistles,and trust me,you will notice them. My suggestion is that,avoid all the performances he did on the singer (the voice looks like talent show),the audio is not great and because the small ammount of time they have to perform,the performances are not worth the time (and for almost all of them you can find the concert versions). Countertenor, technically. Though I have heard Dimash choose to color his voice like a soprano (he did that in 'Love Is Like a Dream'), in this song he's definitely sounding like a countertenor - until the whistle notes, which most countertenors don't have.
His range is extraordinary, obviously, but I don't think that's the most important thing about Dimash. It's that he has mastered so many vocal techniques: operatic, pop, R&B, ethnic... I haven't heard him do Turkic throat-singing, yodeling, or basso profundo, but just about any other technique I could name, he does it beautifully. Plus some stuff I'd never heard before, like managing to make vocal fry sound beautiful. He's an artist who paints with his voice, and every brush stroke is precise and meaningful. Incredible.

@@Urgelt Not sure he's a counterternor, considering his baritone notes and quality. I'm inclined to think he's a tenor primarily, but he developed the others too. He's confusing, at least for me. But yes, classifying him is not that important.

Dimash is *capable* as a baritone, tenor and countertenor. *Very* capable. He can qualify in all of those ranges.
That said, yes, I think his natural voice is tenor; at least his speaking voice sounds like a tenor.
As an aside, Dimash only has had full access to his baritone register for about two years. That was one of the disclosures he made on his birthday last May.

He was on world's best and quit half way through because of his culture he will not compete again center children what a guy. Dimash is a 26 year old singer/songerwriter/multi instrumentalist from Kazakhstan. Located close to China & Russia. He speaks in 3 languages, sings in more than 12, and plays many instruments from piano to dombra. He's been singing since the age of 5. His parents are both musicians. His dad is a lyricist and his mom sings opera. He also is a very active young man and plays many sports. He has been known to enjoy swimming and has learned some of his breathing techniques from that. He rose to popularity because of the performance on the show 'The Singer', a chinese show, back in 2017. Unfortunately you can't see how many views he has but this video has over 1 billion views on various video platforms in China. He was the only non-Chinese competitor on the show and was put in as a wildcard. His life basically changed overnight. Dimash has a 6 octave range, getting closer to 7 now a days. Honestly the range isn't really what sets him apart as the world's best vocalist in my opinion. He's extremely versatile. He sings songs in all different genres/styles, sings with so much passion, and has unbelievable stage presence. Dimash calls his fans Dears because they are dear to his heart and if you continue this Dimash journey, I'm positive you will become one too :). As far as to what to listen to next, most everyone would say S.O.S, either from the 2017 Singer show where he got famous from or the Slavic Bazaar performance. Enjoy :)

@@ju1ietta a lot of vocal coaches don't consider his vocal fry apart of his range which is why I say 6 octaves. I don't necessarily agree with it but I say 6 because I feel like it's the least common denominator with people to avoid arguments
Right on all counts.. his incredible 'range' is just one part of the package. He's more like a da Vinci of vocalist performers -- the highest level of genius. Hyperbole? If so, then millions of others are guilty of hyperbole as well. No, there's a reason people call him an 'alien' -- he's in a league of his own. It's safe to say that Dimash has hundreds of millions of fans around the world, and that number is growing every day.

Dimash bursted into fame with his performance of a french song called "SOS" (full title "SOS d' un terrien en detresse") on the chinese competition show "I'm a Singer" in 2017 (as it's mentioned in the beginning of the video you just watched). His cover of this song is a case study in singing and he is totally going in new places with his amazing talent that no other singer has gone in the past. He is an innovator and probably one of the best vocalists ever. His talents go beyond his insane range, as I'm sure you will discover in the future. I won't go into more detail here, as I don't want this comment to be very long.
So, go for "SOS", you will be amazed. I personally believe his cover of SOS on the Singer is the best, the most engaging and well arranged. You will easily find it, it's the one with the most views (more than 11 million).
The only thing I think you missed was that 24 second section where he did it all in one breath. 24 seconds containing belting, a high mix voice, and then an amazing run. at min 8:09 of your video. But everything else you completely got! You see know why he has so many fans. You'll come to realize also why we are so loyal and protective over him.... he's like no one else. Everyone else was giving you great information so I will hold back as I tend to prattle on about Dimash. I just want to ask you to please please please do more Dimash reactions/analysis. The man in the white shirt that stood up at the end is Igor Krutoy, a very famous and talented writer/producer. He works with Dimash quite a lot and has rewritten many songs to really showcase Dimash's unbelievable talent. You will see him in many of Dimash's videos.

At age 5 he told his Mother that the piano was out of tune...so...on to a musical education. His Mom is an Opera Singer, his Dad a Pop Singer and Producer. He plays a wide variety of instruments and won a National award for piano in his country.

Hi 🙋♂️. My recommendation is "Ogni Pietra" writen specifically for Dimash. Its whole classical piece, covering Baritone/Tenor/Alto/High Soprano ranges. Fancam version is the best to me as it gives a closeup on Dimash's face.
There is a fan cam version that uses the audio mix from the performance instead of the cell phone. You get the best of both worlds.

The band were mostly chilled but check out the piano player (who wrote the song) at about 11: 18 at the end of that run. Even he seems to do a 'what the..."? expression.

Hello, I’m from Brazil! The story behind this song is very interesting: The band that accompanies Dimash is the same one that composed the song, without the singer who died after a heart attack! The band is also from Kazakhstan and this performance by Dimash revitalized the song. In addition, the final part he added, with an oriental technique (traditional cazaq singing called “Youkatian”). Is a funeral lament, paying homage to the dead vocalist? Brilliant! The song was originally performed in 1998 and the band's name is A'Studio (Russian-based Kazakhstani pop music group, "Alma-Ata Studio", city of Almaty). The dead singer left the band in 2000 and passed away in 2015 and his name was Batyrkhan Shukenov. The lyrics are by the poet Ilia Reznik together with Baigaly Serkebyev, who is the keyboardist with long hair, which we see in the video accompanying Dimash.

Dimash is a phenomenon and widely recognised as the best vocalist in the world. He started singing lessons and 5 when it was found he has perfect pitch. He is university educated with degrees in classical opera, another in contemporary music, pop and jazz with a major in vocal. He also completed a Broadway musical masterclass and has just (18th June 2020) completed his Masters specialising in Composition, and receiving his Masters degree with Honours, having achieved the maximum score of 100%. His range is over 6 octaves (7 now) but Dimash is dismissive and says it's not how big your range is but what you do with it. He has won many prestigious singing competitions and is a decorated national treasure in his native Kazakhstan. He sings in 12 different languages, speaks fluent Kazakh and Russian, is pretty good with English but is still studying it along with Mandarin which he says is a very hard language to learn but again he is doing well with it.
In 2017 he was 22 and invited to perform a competition for professional singers in China. He was invited as a wildcard and after his very first song(S.O.S.) was catapulted to international stardom and is now a pop superstar in China. He is also famous in Russia mainly for his neo classical work with Igor Krutoy and many of those works are very operatic. His vocals range from a rich bass baritone through to an extremely high soprano and his whistle register has hit a D8 for 5 seconds with vibrato. He was on a solo world tour until the pandemic hit and in his concerts he normally sings for 3 to 4 hours with an eclectic mix of styles. He is from a very musical family both parents and his sister sing, mother is a soprano. Dimash was offered a place with the Astana Opera in Kazakhstan but turned it down to follow his own path and he has been very successful thus far, but I suspect world domination will soon come his way. He is a multi instrumentalist too and is very competent with 8 instruments but can play just about anything. He is 26 now, (May 24th 2020) and is mostly known as a live performer, he has released a triple platinum album in China though and is about to release a new album anyway now. It has been recognised that his high notes are not whistle, but head voice, Dimash rarely uses his whistle register but when he does its spectacular like everything else about him. He has billions of fans worldwide and I am definitely one of them, and he calls us his Dears, as we are all as dear to him as his family, and he means it, he knows who helped to make him famous. He is a softly spoken, polite, elegant and very humble respectful young man. He deserves every bit of the success he is having, he has worked very hard for the past 20 plus years and now his dreams as a young 5 year old are coming true. There is an interview he did for BBC World Service in 2018 where the interviewer showed a drawing he did when he was 5 of him singing on a big stage with microphones, speakers and his beloved music cassettes showing his desire to be where he is now. His recent sellout world tour has been postponed due to the covid-19 epidemic but will restart when its safe to do so. He has concerts lined up in Dusseldorf, Prague and Minsk there will be others most likely in South America where is much in demand. This song was performed as a tribute to the original vocalist of this piece by A Studio, the band on stage with him. Unfortunately the singer Batyrkhan Shukenov, died from a heart attack in 2015., The keyboard player, Baigali Serkebayev wrote and composed the song. They are a Kazakh born, Russian based band and they contacted Dimash and asked him to do his own arrangement of the song, and perform it at the New Wave Festival in Sochi in 2018 with them. It was an immediate hit and bought the band a new lease of popularity in Russia, albeit without Dimash 😁 the Goat trill, or a type of very fast yodel is what he was doing, but it's something Kazakh women do at funerals I believe, so that was his tribute to his favourite singer.
You might like to know on June the 18th, at the Kazakh National University of Arts, Dimash defended his masters thesis called "Personal image of traditional music."
Due to the risk of coronavirus infection, the exam was taken in a remote format. The graduate student majoring in “Composition” received the highest score of 100 points. He graduated with honours and he received a recommendation to enter a doctorate program. I am all proud of him, when I heard I spent the entire day with a daft grin on my face. Oh yes he’s incredible. I saw one of his interviews that was translated with Igor and his parents earlier this year where the interviewer asked how much he sings per day and he said “2 or 3 hours just for fun. 6 or 8 for rehearsal and maybe 10 or more if he’s working on a song for a performance.” I mean wow 🤩 he lives and breathes music and I adore that. 😍😍
The fantastic, magic thing is that he always touches, gets to your soul and eventually stays in it... his voice, songs stay in your brain and just think what song.... and it will sound for you only with no tech things... something like that happened to a huge number of people around the world.... he is a master of taking his listeners to other dimensions... vertical stories... thank you so much for your reaction! He has definitely created a new genre. He merges, pop, rock, opera and more genres together. People have named his style of music as Popra. He's not just an insane vocalist with 6-7 octaves range. He's a musical genius, composer, instrumentalist and sings in around 12 languages.
