The Rafale deal for 144 planes was stalled by the Defence Ministry since around 2010; the ordering of 36 Rafales is not really an alternative. This delay is what is really responsible for the crisis that IAF faces today, so the Air Marshal is justified in flagging the issue. As far as GE is concerned m the supply chain world wide is certainly disrupted and is adding to the discomfort created by past procrastination.

@@vaimurthy as if HAL has never made an aircraft with other OEMs and IAF has never taken the delivery. There was clear cut solution at hand. As far as cost is concerned, HAL is a government company under MoD itself so the quoting double the cost is bizarre argument to believe. Yes the cost would have been high due to creation of new assembly lines, training, learning new tools etc. but double price is hard to believe. To me it's more like propaganda.

IAF should only focus on the #AMCA. If our Air Force desperately wants a single engine fighter jet then we should definitely go for the #F16 Block 70/72 variants. I think the fact behind all this mess that IAF is in right now is that IAF never fought an aerial war after 1971 with Pakistan. PAF on the other hand was at a disadvantage with US embargo it imposed on military hardware to PAF. Then their was 11 years long Russian invasion on Afghanistan. PAF immediately went on to self reliance during that time and we saw the emergence of Kamra Aeronautical Complex which paid its dividends in the coming years.
JF17 was inducted 10 years ago and with time became operational with F6/A5 were all phased out long time back. Now with with J-10C along with F16s and Mirages, its a formidable force. When defense analyst comments that PAF is years ahead of IAF....they are definitely not wrong.

It is not Athmanirbhatrata that is costing is dear, but not having done Athmanirbhatrata earlier. The 10 month delay is caused by late supply of US engines by the US manufacturer. Earlier delays of the LCA programme were caused by the US and Western sanctions due to the Pokran nuclear tests, and the lack of artillery ranging radars in the Kargil war which Pakistan had was caused by the same US Western sanctions, and no, India could not import aircraft from the west then either because ghost were sanctioned at multiple layers.
So the lesson to be learned is that Athmanirbhatrata is essential but it should be funded adequately and funds should be released early enough - that is the failing here.

And even today they are still junk , marginally better than soviet originals that are junk. Since India is non aligned, nobody in the West ,not even France or Japan trust us enough to tech transfer good stuff…
