  • Choosing to build software yourself or buy pre-existing software is a decision that businesses often have to weigh. The choice often comes down to which option is the most cost-effective and practical. Often time considerations are forgotten about in favor of cost, but time is just as valuable and needs to be factored in.
When deciding whether to buy or build, you should consider both the initial price and the time it will take to implement. Should you opt for open source software, an API provider, or a cloud service? Or should you develop everything in-house?
This decision is tricky, there are many factors to consider, and neither option is categorically better. In a build scenario, you're usually using open source tools and frameworks which can take time to learn, manage and maintain. Alternatively, with the buy option, the vendor is responsible for all these aspects and you simply work with their API, which can be quicker and potentially cheaper. one key benefit to building it yourself is the knowledge you’ll gain, you get a very hands-on, deep understanding of the technology.
Yet, for most businesses, buying software is the more economical and logical choice, saving time and resources. Whether you build or buy, remember to keep in mind the long term costs of not just setting up the system, but also maintaining it over time, including server costs and software upkeep.
