For me it was never his death that hit me hardest, it was always watching Edmont de Fortemps reaction to his sons death that gets me crying. After seeing my late friends parents breaking down almost identically, it's hard to watch.
Personally, I saw Haurche's death coming two hours beforehand. Seriously, I'm shock so many people didn't see deathflags waved in their faces during Haurche and Edmont's final talk. That's probably part of why his death had no effect on me. But seeing Lord Edmont struggle to keep it together and ask you to move forward and leave him to his grief nearly broke me.
That's why I'm glad the actor was kept in FF16. Stephen Critchlow had only recorded a little bit at the time of his passing. All but one scene was voiced by a sound-alike replacement. The one scene they kept was... Spoilers below. When Byron was introduced. He learns that Clive is still alive in that scene. It's the opposite of this scene, and I'm so glad they kept Stephen's performance. It's a wonderful counterpoint and bookend to his time with Final Fantasy.
Just the absolutely emotion-packed delivery of the line, "My... Son..." just gets me each time I watch a playthrough. Rest in Peace, Sir Stephen Critchlow. You will be missed.
as sad as this is, it's sadly required. i feel this and another sacrifice close to home is essential for the WoL to forge through beyond the final walk. we will never forget you Haurche. i dont use a shield in my pally glams, but i carry yours in my inventory always.
When I saw the chat tell you to do NPCs first I was like "Oh...oh noooo...noooo that so mean!!!!". Back when I did the vault we didn't have duty support yet, but doing it with Him must hurt even more :( I think this is the first time I've watch this cinematic in 7 years, and I still cried like the first time. Maybe more since I knew it was coming.
People always have this problem in FF. Healers can't resurrect dead people, they're reviving unconscious people. Hence why Phoenix Downs don't make death irrelevant.

I'll always remember when, in Crytarium, I met a Haurchefant cosplayer who offered me a hot chocolate, back in the days of Shadowbringer, which encouraged me to keep going. Glad you enjoyed the dungeon.

Im in the same boat, I finished the vault a week ago. I truly fell in love with his undaunted charisma and belief he had in people, in me and the 2 remaining scions...At our lowest, he was there to cheer us on.
For your info Russ, a nice trivia: You called him "Bro", but did you know that in Japanese his mannerisms, voice and dialogue are a bit more "lustful" to the point where whether you are Male or Female he still expresses a deep admiration akin to a crush or even being in love? x3. It's a big meme. And you just have to play the cutscenes he speaks in with Japanese voice, and the mannerisms change too. Thanks to me playing on Japanese voices, I actually found him kinda clingy and pervy, haha. I actually was the character hiding behind others so he didn't touch me... And yet I cried like a baby when they took him away. Go avenge him! And remember, a smile better suits a hero! You will never forget that phrase. Welcome to the suffering club... Brilliantly evil. My FC did that to me; with the added bonus of getting (or having, depending on perspective lol) to listen to me gush over how much I'd grown to genuinely love him over the course of the story by that point. Not a simple "favorite character" but a genuine "I could see him being my WoL's only primary love interest if there were relationship mechanics" kind of love. I didn't think anything of them refusing to let me do the vault without everyone being in chat with me at the time, my FC mates and I routinely spend hours tearing apart and digging into our favorite pieces of media, and my feelings on the parallels between the Ishgardian Holy See and real-life systems were always a source of amusement to them. And then came that moment. They (jokingly) had to call my wife and say "hey, we can't give you context but go hug your spouse *right now.*" ...And then we got to repeat the process with said wife three weeks ago, when *she* finally got there.
Back in 'ye olde days', the German client, which my GF an I are playing, had a MASSIVE spoiler for the aftermath of the Vault upon the release of Heavensward. My GF always likes to check for new achievements to see what rewards she wants to go after first. The thing is, the achievement for completing this part of the story, gave a title as reward. And it shows what the title is in the achievement window. The German title, literally translated, used to be "in memory of Haurchefant", which - again, in German - is something you would ONLY use if the person is dead (the title has since been changed after people complained about it). My GF found that title in the achievements at the very first day of early access for Heavensward. Knowing how much I LOVED Haurchefant, she kept quiet about it for the entirety of our playthrough up to the Vault. And when the cutscene after the Vault got to That Point™, she just burst out "FINALLY!", while I started sobbing xD
I think it hit harder for me, because I always thought Count Fortemps was evil. And then to see him break down over his son really convinced me he was good and it hit so hard.

Before Duty Support was added, it was Haurchefant who had the line about not being too late and Alphinaud wasn't even there. Now, if you are playing as a Healer, you're there alongside Alphy trying to heal Haurchefant. But some wounds can't be healed by magic, that's why they have chirurgeons who deal with those kinds of heavy wounds. But it still would have made no difference due to how fast he died
It’s always fun to see the game recognize that you’ve leveled certain jobs or done certain questlines, but yeah being a healer during the vault when I was getting an alt up to speed and seeing them help try to heal Haurchefant was so good!
Honestly, the death wasn’t all that bad at first. Unexpected and extremely frustrating, yes, especially with how everyone just LETS THE VILLAINS WALTZ AWAY. But what actually punctured my heart was seeing the venerable Lord Fortemps lose his composure. He was such a noble man, he deserved to have a noble son to take over the family name. And now he’s got no one, because that son gave his life to preserve mine. It just… hurts.
This dungeon still hits so hard my heart! 😭But I know that like he said "A smile better suits a hero", but still it hurts. 😊He is a legend that we all will remember a Gigachad to the very end. 🛡
Haurchefant's death cut me deep. As a former combat solider who has lost his best friend to an ambush in Iraq, I know the sting of having your battle buddy taken from you. Haurchebro "jumped on the grenade", and for that, he will forever be remembered. Count Edmont's response broke me. No parent should ever have to bury their child. As a father who is wildly overprotective of my kid, that scene almost sent me into a panic. It was the first time a game ever drew a tear out of me.
So I've been playing since 2.0 beta, so I did this on launch. The final boss of the Vault used to be much, much harder. So we spent a half hour wiping on him before this cutscenes, so I was already drained, lmao.
The multi layered value and pain that is losing our boy is Paramount to the game It sucks even till Endwalker and we got a sort of side story to it in via DSR
as with most people, yea haurchefaunts death hurt like hell, but when count edmont learns of his sons sacrifice and him breaking down like that, was the nail in the coffin
The great thing about FF is from this point on, it will only get better. Stormblood may not be everyone’s forte because of the pacing, but it will be enjoyable regardless with gameplay. Can’t wait for you to journey through this world that we all love so much!

I am hopelessly in love with Haurchefant. He stood by my side and cared for me as a person and friend, not as a warrior or weapon. In the Japanese translation he said “Your smile is truly splendid”. I have that tattooed on my forearm.
This is the point for a lot of people. It is the moment you know if you're sticking with FFXIV for the long run. Death in a lot of RPGs can feel cheap or sometimes even humorous but Haurchefant being taken out like this is when you realize the gravity of the tone shift since the end of ARR. Also a note about healing : this goes into the direction that healing only speeds up your natural healing process; it doesn't grow back limbs, doesn't undo decapitation, doesn't undo a large, gaping wound in your abdomen. When you take HP damage, it is usually in the form of fatigue, weariness and light wounds that doesn't disable you but when you hit 0, it is because you've taken a hit that essentially took you out of the fight. Raise-spells simply kickstart you back on your feet but it doesn't bring back the dead, hence why you get Weakened or the Near Death debuff. So that's why Haurchefant can't be healed : that hole in his body isn't going anywhere and there's no way natural healing would eventually allows him to recover, hence why it cannot be mended. Healing magic cannot do what your body couldn't eventually recover from; it would require a much higher level of magic or power to even be able to create something like that. I know it is a bit ironic that SCH and SMN have the Raise equivalent called "Ressurection" but it comes down to the same thing regardless : a severe enough wound will kill you. The Warrior of Light is simply incredibly tough for reasons that will become clear much later and they're an incredibly skilled individual at not taking those life-threatening hits. Nevermind that it is alluded that anytime you 'wipe' (and I think that was mentioned by YoshiP or a dev at one point), you didn't actually die but experienced a possible outcome of the fight through the Echo and learned from it. So really, the canon outcome is the one where you win or at least (and this is important) *where YOU don't die* .
My theory on this is that the Warrior of Light can only revive other Warrior of Lights since we’re all apart of Hydaelyn. Would explain this cutscene, why healers have never been able to revive any other fallen NPC, and why you have a full wipe in trust dungeons even if it is only the PC that drops.

I'll admit, I think this is only the second time I've ever been actually enraged at a fictional game boss. The first was another game with Final Fantasy in the title.
NPCs are good to run new dungeons with as they are programmed to do the right thing in a fight mechanics. Only reason why its not used often as they deal low damage and makes a 15 mins dungeon to 30 mins.
This is pretty much THE definitive “welcome to FFXIV” moment for the playerbase, if the end of ARR into HW didn’t do it How his father reacts, how everything just freezes to let you mourn Imagine how it must be for people that have actually been playing since ARR, and got to be there with him until HW released, “unable” to return to the city-states given the situation
It hurts even more when you watch the video "In another reality?" by BeneG. hes usually known for 💩📫ing but this one was very in the feels, a lot of players including myself can relate to this, and for the first few months after the vault i was going through a similar experience as the video. Then i understood why everyone gave me commends and consoled me right when i finished the Vault for the first time despite being a bard at the time (dps classes usually never get commends).
a similar player gave me a hot chocolate...aaand i lost an inventory slot that day. guy was actually named "Lord Haurchefant" ...so naturally the hot chocolate says it was made by Lord Haurchefant too....
With all this in mind... can you imagine how it felt for the veterans when they were going back and adding Duty Support to these dungeons, and we realized who was going to be Tanking The Vault?

Yeah the NPCs are no slouches when it comes to single target, they just dont AOE which is why people dog on them. People are too used to wall to wall aoe pulling.

I think i've fixed it since. It's because the sound effects are so loud in game, but I think they've since made it so you can adjust mid cutscene and maybe even have seperate levels for cutscenes?
Considering they weren't able to heal him after, I think it's much more impactful that he would have hallowed ground... but it doesn't protect from damage that comes from cover.
I know it's an iconic moment, but when I reached this moment I was just mad. There was no buildup, there was no explanation given for why this particular spear was so strong (especially since we know how strong these guys are, we just clapped 3 of them), it was literally just "The writers have decreed that it is time for a named character to die". Haurchefaunt is a Paladin, he does this sort of protection all the time, why did it backfire this specific time? And why does that knight dude (who isn't even given a name here) not spam this spear against every scion the Heavens' Ward encounter from here on? What makes it worse is that the other big moment in HW does all of these things exactly right and makes the moment feel like it matters, but nobody remembers it because people are so fixated on "Nooooo my boi Haurchy!!!"
It’s a mechanic in the extreme and ultimate. The spear reduces your inherent ability to heal and can one shot a WOL in EX if not tanked by another party member. It’s the knight special ability and requires a ton of wind up.
@@crowolf3862 But none of that is explained in the moment, or in any of the story that comes after. And Haurchefaunt is a tank anyway, so he did the mechanic correctly. It's not that they killed him off; it's that they killed him off in the latest way possible, putting no thought whatsoever into the circumstances of his death. Compare that to Nanano's death. Not only is poison a plausible thing that could kill her, but it reinforces her tragic flaw that she sees the best in people and has very ambitious dreams that her fellow rulers were not ready for. It mirrors Alphinaud's flaw perfectly and creates this tone of mistrust right before you dive into a storyline about Ishgardian houses constantly fighting for power as they wage a war against heretics that could be hiding among them. All Haurchy's death communicates is that you shouldn't try to protect others because sometimes it'll be too much for you.
@@hoodiesticksi think that was the point though. We’re only level 60. We’ve fought a few gods, but we’re not all powerful. There are going to be people we can’t help, can’t save, and even if we do our very best, bad things still happen. It is one of the big moments to grapple with of “we did everything right but it still wasn’t enough.” It sets the tone of HW in a way that even the sultana’s cup couldn’t. Especially as we grapple with the dragons and the roots of the war and the first great betrayal. DSR doubles down on those concepts, too. Hauche is one of the big representations of all the things we failed at doing in ARR re moenbryda and the deaths of the scions at the waking sands. The DRK quests, imo, revolve around all three events in interesting ways. We’re still figuring ourselves out and realizing we can’t save everyone, but still need to try, is central to the wol’s arc in a lot of ways I think.

So I've been playing since 2.0 beta, so I did this on launch. The final boss of the Vault used to be much, much harder. So we spent a half hour wiping on him before this cutscenes, so I was already drained, lmao.
At least you got a nice cutscene to cheer you up.... D:
The multi layered value and pain that is losing our boy is Paramount to the game
It sucks even till Endwalker and we got a sort of side story to it in via DSR

as with most people, yea haurchefaunts death hurt like hell, but when count edmont learns of his sons sacrifice and him breaking down like that, was the nail in the coffin

The great thing about FF is from this point on, it will only get better. Stormblood may not be everyone’s forte because of the pacing, but it will be enjoyable regardless with gameplay. Can’t wait for you to journey through this world that we all love so much!

I am hopelessly in love with Haurchefant. He stood by my side and cared for me as a person and friend, not as a warrior or weapon.
In the Japanese translation he said “Your smile is truly splendid”. I have that tattooed on my forearm.

This is the point for a lot of people. It is the moment you know if you're sticking with FFXIV for the long run. Death in a lot of RPGs can feel cheap or sometimes even humorous but Haurchefant being taken out like this is when you realize the gravity of the tone shift since the end of ARR.
Also a note about healing : this goes into the direction that healing only speeds up your natural healing process; it doesn't grow back limbs, doesn't undo decapitation, doesn't undo a large, gaping wound in your abdomen. When you take HP damage, it is usually in the form of fatigue, weariness and light wounds that doesn't disable you but when you hit 0, it is because you've taken a hit that essentially took you out of the fight. Raise-spells simply kickstart you back on your feet but it doesn't bring back the dead, hence why you get Weakened or the Near Death debuff.
So that's why Haurchefant can't be healed : that hole in his body isn't going anywhere and there's no way natural healing would eventually allows him to recover, hence why it cannot be mended. Healing magic cannot do what your body couldn't eventually recover from; it would require a much higher level of magic or power to even be able to create something like that.
I know it is a bit ironic that SCH and SMN have the Raise equivalent called "Ressurection" but it comes down to the same thing regardless : a severe enough wound will kill you. The Warrior of Light is simply incredibly tough for reasons that will become clear much later and they're an incredibly skilled individual at not taking those life-threatening hits.
Nevermind that it is alluded that anytime you 'wipe' (and I think that was mentioned by YoshiP or a dev at one point), you didn't actually die but experienced a possible outcome of the fight through the Echo and learned from it. So really, the canon outcome is the one where you win or at least (and this is important) *where YOU don't die* .
It hits worse if you're a healer during this.
My theory on this is that the Warrior of Light can only revive other Warrior of Lights since we’re all apart of Hydaelyn. Would explain this cutscene, why healers have never been able to revive any other fallen NPC, and why you have a full wipe in trust dungeons even if it is only the PC that drops.

The vault is one of mine & my GFs favorite dungeons. Although i dont understand how she can still enjoy any part of ARR/HW after she's played through those particular XPACs at least 20+ times X.X god bless her lil WHM soul

I'll admit, I think this is only the second time I've ever been actually enraged at a fictional game boss. The first was another game with Final Fantasy in the title.
NPCs are good to run new dungeons with as they are programmed to do the right thing in a fight mechanics. Only reason why its not used often as they deal low damage and makes a 15 mins dungeon to 30 mins.

Imagine how it must be for people that have actually been playing since ARR, and got to be there with him until HW released, “unable” to return to the city-states given the situation

It hurts even more when you watch the video "In another reality?" by BeneG. hes usually known for 💩📫ing but this one was very in the feels, a lot of players including myself can relate to this, and for the first few months after the vault i was going through a similar experience as the video.
Then i understood why everyone gave me commends and consoled me right when i finished the Vault for the first time despite being a bard at the time (dps classes usually never get commends).
a similar player gave me a hot chocolate...aaand i lost an inventory slot that day. guy was actually named "Lord Haurchefant" ...so naturally the hot chocolate says it was made by Lord Haurchefant too....
You'll never hear the word Vault the same again.
With all this in mind... can you imagine how it felt for the veterans when they were going back and adding Duty Support to these dungeons, and we realized who was going to be Tanking The Vault?
Wait a minute this guy is still in Heavensward. I remember seeing another video months back and he is only here. I should go back and check what he was doing this entire time.

Yeah the NPCs are no slouches when it comes to single target, they just dont AOE which is why people dog on them. People are too used to wall to wall aoe pulling.

why does every streamer turn down sfx volume 😭the cutscenes don't hit hard at all when the voices are way above everything else and the sfx are barely audible
I think i've fixed it since. It's because the sound effects are so loud in game, but I think they've since made it so you can adjust mid cutscene and maybe even have seperate levels for cutscenes?

Considering they weren't able to heal him after, I think it's much more impactful that he would have hallowed ground... but it doesn't protect from damage that comes from cover.

I know it's an iconic moment, but when I reached this moment I was just mad. There was no buildup, there was no explanation given for why this particular spear was so strong (especially since we know how strong these guys are, we just clapped 3 of them), it was literally just "The writers have decreed that it is time for a named character to die". Haurchefaunt is a Paladin, he does this sort of protection all the time, why did it backfire this specific time? And why does that knight dude (who isn't even given a name here) not spam this spear against every scion the Heavens' Ward encounter from here on?
What makes it worse is that the other big moment in HW does all of these things exactly right and makes the moment feel like it matters, but nobody remembers it because people are so fixated on "Nooooo my boi Haurchy!!!"
It’s a mechanic in the extreme and ultimate.
The spear reduces your inherent ability to heal and can one shot a WOL in EX if not tanked by another party member. It’s the knight special ability and requires a ton of wind up.
@@crowolf3862 But none of that is explained in the moment, or in any of the story that comes after. And Haurchefaunt is a tank anyway, so he did the mechanic correctly. It's not that they killed him off; it's that they killed him off in the latest way possible, putting no thought whatsoever into the circumstances of his death.
Compare that to Nanano's death. Not only is poison a plausible thing that could kill her, but it reinforces her tragic flaw that she sees the best in people and has very ambitious dreams that her fellow rulers were not ready for. It mirrors Alphinaud's flaw perfectly and creates this tone of mistrust right before you dive into a storyline about Ishgardian houses constantly fighting for power as they wage a war against heretics that could be hiding among them. All Haurchy's death communicates is that you shouldn't try to protect others because sometimes it'll be too much for you.
@@hoodiesticksi think that was the point though. We’re only level 60. We’ve fought a few gods, but we’re not all powerful. There are going to be people we can’t help, can’t save, and even if we do our very best, bad things still happen.
It is one of the big moments to grapple with of “we did everything right but it still wasn’t enough.” It sets the tone of HW in a way that even the sultana’s cup couldn’t. Especially as we grapple with the dragons and the roots of the war and the first great betrayal.
DSR doubles down on those concepts, too.
Hauche is one of the big representations of all the things we failed at doing in ARR re moenbryda and the deaths of the scions at the waking sands. The DRK quests, imo, revolve around all three events in interesting ways.
We’re still figuring ourselves out and realizing we can’t save everyone, but still need to try, is central to the wol’s arc in a lot of ways I think.
