  • I try to use my rake to lightly remove the snow and ice without breaking up the gravel too much. I'll use my box blade next.

    I can see your logic in the intro. Definitely. Traction Control seems to be only for limiting the engine in the even of overpowering the tires' traction. I really like that you keep the humility and honesty while you try to do things. It's real. It's genuine. Always learning! I don't have all the answers for you... except to scrape the driveway before you drive on it and pack it into ice. Great video!

      Thank you, Logan! I really appreciate your kind words. I really thought a few scrapes would provide enough rock in the snow/ice mix to provide enough traction. I think a few more passes would have worked, but I really don't want to be messing up the driveway before I have enough experience to fix it! LOL Thanks again, buddy!

    Your snow most likely won't stay anyway. What we deal with here is that most likely, it will. I try really hard to not push the rock off but by spring, it always looks like I didn't try at all.
    This year, the ground isn't frozen underneath. That makes it very difficult to not scalp and gouge. That is exactly what you are having to deal with.
    You did very well David. You are a sharp guy. I never had any doubt that you would figure it out.
    Maybe next year you and I will both have snow blowers and we can shoot it all the way north into Ross's yard.
    That was a really good idea David. Worked great.

    In my experience snow plowing right after the snow falls is the best solution. Once it has been driven over and packed by vehicles the snow can be difficult to remove. The landscape rake probably would have worked great if it was used before the snow was packed down. Using the front loader can be very difficult because you have to be careful not to dig into the driveway with the bucket. A rear mounted blade is a great solution that is pretty cost effective.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ethan! I removed the bulk right after the snow fall began to ease. It didn't snow for 3 or 4 days then it snowed another 4 inches last night. And it's snowing right now. Rinse and repeat is my future for a while it looks like. Thanks for the tips. I have looked for a rear blade on marketplace, but nobody is offering one around here at the moment. I definitely want one, but it's not in the budget (that's why I want a used one). Thanks for watching and for the ideas, my friend!

  • @DIYMyWay

    Hi David! Well I haven’t seen a rake used for snow removal before but it seemed to help. I think the box blade would work better with the scarifiers and blade set to barely engage the snow and gravel. But I’m just guessing since rarely have to deal with snow and ice. Nice drone shots of your family having fun sledding!

      Thank you, Martin! Your guess is as good as mine! It snowed in MS maybe 3 or 4 times when I was growing up and 4" on the ground was a blizzard. I've been using the rake more and more because it's pretty versatile after all. I wish I could turn it around 180 deg like yours, but even so it does a lot of things. I need more time using my box blade and I may get a rear blade. The fun is in figuring it out!

    Where you are I would keep bags of dry sand indoors . Get a cheap spreader tow behinde . Even though I’m in Ontario we still get times when I just need too sprinkle the driveway for traction . I only use salt in a severe ice condition . You can buy dry sand in bags at your local building center . It’s more money but worth it . Using dry sand works great and just washes away in spring with no harm too Enviroment . Notice you have weight on your rake . Friend of mine bought the quickattach plate that has three point point hitch hook up on it . He uses the rake on front of tractor by spinning around . No soar neck and has down pressure with the loader and makes the rake a way more useful tool . 👍

    It is great to see the snow but it does create some challenges. Our weather is very odd on the other end of the scale, it was 16c today which is a summer temp. This is a good issue to explore. I have the same problem - North East winters, 1/2+ mile gravel road that's very steep in a couple of spots. I keep a pile of gravel at all times thinking that is the best option, but it doesn't always work and too much gravel is also ineffective. Hope to get some good ideas from this. Hi David, not real sure what to do here. I was thinking the same as DIY My Way using the box blade and scarifiers. Might also try using your grapple, keep it closed and back drag with some down pressure to see if you can stir up some gravel to get traction. You can always touch up the driveway in the spring if needed. Once that snow gets compacted it's hard to break through it. Hope one of these ideas from the comments here helps. Take care buddy.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kyle! I'm sure you and Martin could use the box blade and scarifiers with success. I'm just afraid I'll mess up the driveway and not be able to fix it soon enough. I really just need to use my box blade and tear something up, then fix it. It's the best way to learn! Maybe we could visit each other's property and you could give me some live tips! Thanks, bro I appreciate it!

    Some people here carry a coffee can with sackcrete in it to sprinkle on the ground where they need the extra traction. I like sand. It is about $9 per ton. It is cheap and bites into the ice like crazy. We carry chicken grit in our semis. That works great too.
    I still like the job that your rake did.

    Your trying to do the near impossible! Once that layer of ice packs in it’s hard to do much with it. Having some small pea gravel to sprinkle over the ice would be the best approach. As for clearing the initial snow fall edge tamers or a pvc pipe slotted to fit over your bucket edge works. Even then you have that layer of ice later. Good luck!

    I had that goofy traction control in a Peterbilt semi tractor that I used to own. My driveway laid to the west and had a fairly significant climb coming out of it. I always struggled with that truck when it was empty. loaded, it would walk right out like nothing. I have a barge rope and I would have my wife give me a yank with my old 50 John Deere. The tractor weighed about 3000 lbs and the truck 30,000. Once she got me moving I would keep going right behind her until we topped the hill. She hated that. I was 20 ft. behind her but when she would turn around to look, all she would see was the grill of a semi coming at her.

    • @PaleHorseOutdoors
      @PaleHorseOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL great story! I towed my buddy in his 1983 F150 up that hill on Monday. That truck weighs nothing and that was still a bit nerve wracking for me on the icy hills. I don't know if traction control does much on a normal basis but on snow and ice I think it's more dangerous to have it on than to have it off. When it kills the power, you can't do anything but slide helplessly down the road.

    Buy a length of white 2" or 3" PVC pipe schedule 40 ( or as thick walled as you can), slice a gap the entire length, drill 2 holes on each end to hold ratchet straps, and slip it over your bucket's cutting edge and use the straps to hold it tight.
