Actually the CHURCH Santa Maria sopra Minerva is fantastic in its own right, with the blue ceiling with all the golden stars!
Re Bernini's elephant: When the Swedish queen Kristina abdicated and converted to Catholicism in Innsbruck, she became a celebrity in the catholic world, and especially in Rome, when she came to live there, entering via Porta del Popolo.
There are lots of stories about Kristina. One is that she was entertained with an opera, featuring Indian war elephants with their typical "turrets". It is in remembrance thereof that Bernini sculpted the elephant and put the obelisque on top!.
There are lots of other stories about her. Finally, a picture of her was placed on the right side after the entrance into S:t Peter's Cathedral.

Rare and real hidden, delicate gem. Oh that cafe! And those colored steps. Sometimes just a simple thing is needed, just like those steps, to make a place brighter.
