    To give you an idea of how old this program is, Microsoft Windows ver. 1 was still not released. In fact, it wasn't until 2 years after this program aired. I was in college for computer science at the time, and everything had to be typed on our very slow propietary IBM personal computers (before Bill Gates reverse-engineered DOS and Apple computers). Computer games were where you had to type commands, like "Take 2 steps forward", "Pick up key", "Turn right", etc., to get to your goal of unlocking the treasure. LAME! But they were fun at that time. This was all almost 40 years ago!

    • @E_y_a_l
      @E_y_a_l 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bill gates didn't reverse-engineered DOS, Microsoft bought the rights for a CP/M clone developed by SCP and ported it to the IBM-PC.

      Ah you mean adventure games! Or "text adventures" as they became called, after somebody invented graphical adventures, where you move a guy around and interact by clicking on objects, not typing.
      This programme's from 1983. Home computers had graphics then! We had video games. The Atari 2600 console had been out since 1977 in the USA, overpriced rubbish though it was. But in 1982 Sinclair and Commodore both had hugely successful computers out with eventually thousands of games! Most were action games, played with joystick. The Atari 400 and 800 home computers came out in 1978 and they had better graphics than the Commodore, cost quite a bit more though. Actually, talking of Windows, even the IBM PC had video games by 1983!
      5 years earlier, you'd have a point. But by 1983 computers were taking off and zooming ahead!

    I hope everyone is wondering why they don't make shows like this any longer. You know, shows which treat children like the adults they're going to become, teaching them useful concepts and getting their minds working. Shows made for kids these days seem to treat children like the toddlers they used to be, giving them things that distract their brain, not make it work. I wonder why that is...? Why would you not challenge a developing brain to develop even further?

      indeed it does .. should be marketed as an eco friendly variant to battery operated variants around nowadays. that's actually a marked gap, IMHO.

    Interesting to see how time has changed with that odd one out question. I dunno if they let women be cardinals but they can be priests and vicars now, so I got it wrong (I thought cardinals are unique to the vatican, right? :P) I wonder how many more will be thrown off by it

    Just curious Rob and Deane (ha) ...and guessing it has been asked before but when and why did the Curiosity Show end?

      It is in my book on the show www.wakefieldpress.com.au/product.php?productid=1533&cat=0&page=&featured=Y but briefly, to qualify as a 'C' program all children's programs had to be approved. The committee became very politicised and ideological, and decided that we could not have a C rating as we were two men. We looked at introducing a female presenter and tried, but Germany (which was taking the program for Europe) said that they wanted the show exactly as it was. Rather than compromise what we were doing, Deane and I decided to end it while it was doing well. The government then sacked the committee but it was too late for us - Rob

    I still remember Dean saying
    "I'm glad you asked"
    Quality tv shows back then unlike today's crap.

    My guess for the final challenge is either 31.4 centimeters or 3.18 centimeters.
