★ 🇨🇭Cab ride along lake Biel, Cornaux - Basel, Switzerland [2018]

  • On this trip, we're travelling from Cornaux to Olten along the Jura foot railway, a line along the Jura mountains, then continuing on to Basel where the locomotive is parked. Before this video starts, the locomotive was used to bring an empty oil train to Cornaux, where it will be filled at a refinery in the neighbouring town Cressier.
    Interesting is the one track section not long after the start of the video, which is in fact the only single track section of this major east - west railway line. By 2025, the SBB plans on replacing this track section with a dually tracked tunnel, so we have to enjoy it while we can. See SBB Video • Kapazitätsausbau, Lige...
    Also interesting: after Tuscherz, the line used to continue along lake Biel to Biel, until the Vingelz Tunnel was built and opened in 1969. My hope is to try and capture the old path of the train on video someday so we can relive what it might have been like to travel there by train.
    Another point of interest: between Hägendorf & Wangen bei Olten a new siding was constructed for a company that was relocated out of Olten. The siding cost around 2.4 million Francs. If you watch my cabride along here from 2014, you'll notice that the siding is not there: • ★ 🇨🇭Cab ride Langendor...
    There are a few interesting trains and locomotives to see too - including the new train from the SOB, parked in Solothurn and a new SBB Hybrid shunting locomotive by Alstom that should be replacing the Am 841.
    In case any of you are asking yourselves what the male voice is communicating, here is a brief explanation:
    Sifa is the name of the German system that checks whether the driver is conscious or not. First a sign appears on the screen, requiring the driver to release the pedal. If the driver doesn't react (say he or she was looking elsewhere), then the acoustic warning "sifa" sounds. If there is still no reaction, the emergency brakes are applied.
    "Störung" means that there is a problem that the driver should pay attention to. Most of these locomotives always have some sort of little problem, so its normal to hear that sound whenever you start one up. The problems vary in degrees - some problems are quite superficial while others could mean that the locomotive is no longer drivable until the problem is addressed.

    The tracks in Switzerland are so smooth. Here in the United States tracks are bumpy, trains rocking back and forth, horns blaring, smoke belching and bells ringing.

    One thing I've wondered, the speed limit signs like at 40:54, you've got three there, 125/95/100. I presume they're for different categories of train? IS 125 for tilting trains, and 95/100 for freight and passenger?

    • @lorirocks777

    One question for you.......at each signal mast or signal bridge there are two or four square pads located between the rails spaced about two meters apart. Are those detectors for the central train control to affirm train location and speed?

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they transmit information on signal status, gradient, speed restrictions and so on, to the locomotive which processes the information in relation to the train length, braking capacity, etc to accurately monitor the whether the driver's actions are sufficient.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Train location is monitored either with axle counters near signals (with yellow boxes next to the track) or track sections that are isolated that detect current when the left and right tracks are electrically connected by the axles of a train.

    Darth Vader lives! In the suspension/damping system of class 430 locos.
    Did the loco or a close vehicle in the train have a wheel flat or a worn wheel profile causing hunting of an axle? There was a lot of banging on what I assume is continuous track.

      Those sounds come from suspension when the bogies turn. Under the locomotive are big bars what connects the locomotive frame to bogies. Is not center pin in the bogies like in waggons. So is big sustensions mounted the side of the bogies what connects to the frame and those makes these sounds. These sounds are only on Traxx locomotives.

    Was it not economical just to leave the engine with its cars being filled at the refinery? It feels like a long way to send an engine back without pulling something to make it worthwhile.

    Now, why drive back, rather than put the loco in tow on the next train back? Unless they also need to transport the driver back to Basel.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Locomotive rental is expensive, so you have to do as much with 1 loco as possible. Sometimes the next train back might be a few days later.

    • @SynchroScore
      @SynchroScore 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorirocks777 We don't really have locomotive 'rental' in this country, though there is leasing, which is a contract for months, usually. Most often used with smaller operators that don't have their own locomotive shops, like industrial railroads or ports. There's also 'power-by-the-hour' agreements, where the lease is for a fee per horsepower-hour produced by the locomotive.
