Hi Erica: Got string?? I ran out!!! 😂 ❤
😂
Spanish is not a translation of English.
That, in a nutshell, is exactly what I need to hear, over and over. Put bluntly and plainly. Made me smile, because it's true, and easily forgotten in the panic of comprehension.
Subscribed. Now off to watch your other videos. Thank you.
So glad to hear that was your major takeaway! It's a big one! Welcome and thank you for being here! 🤗
@@EricaRayLanguage It was, but only just beating about 7 other takeaways I, umm, took away from your video. You speak very eloquently but plainly, I can see why you're a teacher. You're an absolute natural at it. Making things sound simple is a talent, because we often like to think things are too difficult, and that becomes a way out, which is pretty stupid, but we all do it. But you make it sound like "Actually, that sounds doable!" And of course it is, otherwise no-one would speak Spanish :D And there are 3 year olds in Venezuela who speak it better than I do. :-) Because really it's simple. And I've remembered that because of this video. So thank you again. You've rebooted my enthusiasm.
(I'll be back in a couple of months, and you'll think Antonio Banderas is in the building. Haha. Cheers. :-) )
Thank you and I'm so happy it was helpful!! 😃
Como no! Ella no tiene pelos en la lingua.
@@qgholway,
Yesterday, I learned (from another TH-cam Spanish teacher) that Spanish is closer to a direct translation of old English.
Quite interesting to study.
This is the first time I came across your video and channel. As a black woman learning Spanish, I'm subscribing immediately.
Thank you and welcome! 😃
I have no words to express how appreciative I am for this video. Everything you’ve stated, is exactly what I’ve been experiencing. I’ve unknowingly have been struggling to accept that Spanish is not English lol. I’ve been trying to break down every single word, the structure of it to make sense , and compare it to English, and it’s been incredibly challenging and very discouraging. However, I now understand what I need to do moving forward. I’m sure others have felt the same, but did not know how to exactly express it. By the way, you may be the only instructor on TH-cam that has acknowledged this issue people have with learning a different language. Thank you for touching on this topic, it answered a lot of questions for me. Thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much for your heartfelt words. I'm honored to be of help and wish you all the best on your Spanish journey!
You’re exactly right, I completely agree with you. In fact, I’ve found myself saying “that’s crazy.. why do they say it like that? They should say, “blah blah blah..”. But then one day, I realized “we don’t get to make the rules of Spanish, we only get to learn them!”
Thanks Erica!! You are an amazing teacher!! 👏👏👏❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@marchyman5061 Agreed! It’s either get with it or get lost lol!
@@zaubia3677😂
@marchyman5061 Aww thank you so much!
I feel like I’m more of a beginner now I just know random words en espanol I know comer comida bebos afueda ahora frio etc etc it’s extremely hard for me to put together I want it to be perfect!
I've been thinking about this for a long time but not being able to fully express it. I had 4+ years of Spanish classes in highschool and college and they never said any of this! This is a much more authentic and fun way to learn
So glad it resonated!
You're such an effective teacher. Teaching is definitely your gift.
Thank you so much. 🤗
She speaks Spanish very beautifully. Werk Sis! ❤️🔥
Thank you so much!
Brilliant video Erica. 'Spanish is not a translation of English' - this is certainly how I first viewed it but if you get tied to that, you'll struggle.
Thank you! Yes, that's very true.
I am a language teacher and congratulate you on your method of teaching. I learn so much from you, thank you.
@@Josephine-qj9jj That means a lot. Thank you so much!
I see a black woman teaching Spanish, I subscribe. First time coming across this channel, I'm excited!
Excited to have you! Welcome!
I highly recommend that people get the 750 Spanish Verbs and Their Uses book. It will help you to understand the various uses of the verbs. A must have if you are trying to learn Spanish.
Accept Spanish for Spanish! It’s a different language from English.. 🔥🔥🔥
Great video! Thank you. I struggle with the "why" question. I do it with math too! My brain is so hard to override though. Something in me just needs to know why. I'm going to do my best to move past this.
You can do it!
Thank you so much because it will aide me more effectively and efficiently to learn Spanish by learning in CHUNKS!!
You're so welcome!
Hola profe! I have problems stringing a sentence together in English! 😅😂
This really works learning in chunks is definitely an awesome way to help. with sentence structure.
Oh trust, I have that same problem too...all the time! 😅 Yes, it really works! Great to hear from you, David!
This was so helpful!! On my gosh. No more learning one word a day wow I see how it's been slowing me down.
Yes!! So happy it was helpful!
I studied spanish for far too long trying to translate english to spanish, and trying to figure out why this "a" was there or why this "que" was here. Then I started with Dreaming Spanish and realized everything I was doing was wrong lol. Since then my progres accelerated fast.
I'm so glad you found a better way! ☺️
"Notice it, and accept it." Lol true true. Hard but true.
😁
I can relate to this so much, I had problems understanding but I noticed that when I stopped focusing on the small things I had a much easier time. I listened to latin american youtubers even though I didn’t understand spanish and just in 6 months it has improved the speed of my understanding a lot. (I am still a beginner though)
That's wonderful!!
I'm not learning Spanish but this is helpful as I am learning mandarin and have been struggling applying what I am learning. I find I'm translating in English and when there's no English equivalent, I feel stuck and like I don't know enough. Will try learning in chunks. Great video!
Thank you so much! I'm happy it was helpful!
Out of all of the language learning videos I’ve watched (a lot) this is the best and makes so much sense.
So glad it resonated!
This is so true because word for word, I found it difficult to put a sentence together.
Usted es excelente profesora.
¡Muchas gracias!
¡Así es! ¡Me alegra que te haya gustado! ☺️
útilES?
Thank you! You make so much sense. I’ve thought about what you’re saying and now a hear a teacher confirm what I’ve always thought.
Awesome!!
Gracias Erica por su consejo y sabiduría. Aunque yo he estado hablando en Español por muchos años, todavía tengo dificultades en esto.
My problem is translating in my head before I speak. I'm beginning to self-correct that aspect. Thx
I want to learn Spanish by English to improve both Languages. I speak Portuguese ( My mother Language).
How long did it take for you to become this fluent?
There's no short answer, but I have a video on that: th-cam.com/video/RFAyOPQVRfc/w-d-xo.html
Sooo Verdad Erica.
I've never heard this before and everything you said made sense! 🤯 I'm so glad you came across my algorithm. New subbie here!

Aww, I would love to watch your videos but I need to learn Spanish that they use in Spain :((
Gosh I wish i could give more than one like to this video.

Erica Plz plz help me practice blending " dre " like in Madre. Any tips?🫶🏻🌻
Woman. Where have you been all my life??? Notice and accept is a genius idea. Mira, I’ve been getting more intentional with my Spanish as I started in college and that was what two and a half decades ago?? Not fluent yet so I was like ima put my foot down. Don’t get me wrong, I can hold my own for the most part but some struggles are still real. And I saw the phrase today: Lo mejor … the best thing is. I scratched my head trying to make it English and now you come on and say this. THANK YOU! You have beautiful Spanish, lady!! Can you come move in with me and be my full time teacher? Thank yoooou 😂😂👋🏽🤗
Haha! I'm glad we found each other! 🤗 I hope to continue to be of service!

Can you do this same lesson for Spanish speakers wanting to learn English?
You speak Spanish so well. Thanks for content. I am just learning but always problems with the "r" sound.
Cuando empecé a aprender español casi dos años. Me di cuenta de que es mejor preguntar cómo que por qué. Gracias por tus consejos.
Estoy de acuerdo!
It is super encouraging to see you so fluent in Spanish. It makes me think that one day I can reach that level of proficiency.
Absolutely!!
You can and will , I’m not fluent but every time it gets hard I just keep going .. vale la pena , buena suerte con todo !

@@Aritul no problem, I understand your frustration because for me I can write, read, and understand it but my actual speaking is terrible. It’s haunts me 😪lol

This was all super helpful! I've been learning Spanish for years on-and-off, but I want to know (besides consistency) why it hasn't stuck. Your video helped me understand that.
Happy to hear this! 😊
Remembered non of the phrases. 2 of single words. Won’t give up this old girl.
💪
Thank you! This is sooo good, especially the "notice and accept."
The trouble I have with learning individual words in context is that I have thousands, literally thousands of words and phrases in my Quizlet app and how do you even attempt to memorize or learn them all when you have that many?
My suggestions:
1. Don't save individual words anymore! Save phrases/sentences (that contain the new word). You'll probably naturally save fewer items.
2. Don't save every new thing you come across, rather only what you can see yourself *using* soon. You'll remember most of the language through exposure and natural repetition, not through flashcards.
3. Try that categorizing/organizing tip I shared in our January Elevate coaching in order to review your phrases/sentences in a logical way. The session is timestamped, but if you can't find the particular spot just let us know! 😊
Very helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@EricaRayLanguage And I am following now.
Tu español es muy bueno
Gracias!
I am a Speech and Language Pathologist and it reminds me of Gestalt Language Processing. They are now teaching children to read with whole words and short phrases instead of phonemic/phonological, setmenting, etc). I have a few emerging bilingual students and when i tell them that we say things in English (Standard American English) "this way...isnt that silly?" The agree and accept it lol
Very interesting!
¡Este video es tan util!
Gracias, profesora por la leccion
¡De nada! ¡Me alegra que te haya gustado!
You said something like “Spanish does not translate word for word”. Spanish is Spanish and I need to accept it as it is. I will try to associate the sound or chunk with the meaning. At least that was a thought that came to my mind. I enjoy your videos even though they are mostly in English. Your voice and personality are so pleasant and inspiring. Thank you for all that you do!!!
I'm glad you got that big takeaway! Thank you for the compliment. I do lots of Spanish only videos as well: th-cam.com/play/PLHm6cDu7EjUA-pb9m66FI_ibVJBzN1uRD.html

I was just telling my grandson that i would love to learn how to speak Spanish fluently as well as understand the language. He told me to use the Duo Lingo app but I'm old school and rather learn from a person. Technology is cool but your Spanish speaking skills are very impressive. Do you work with beginners?

Gracias amiga Mia, Creo q puedo aprender mucho de ti! Te sigo!
Gracias, amiga!
Love this!
I thank you whole hardly for stating to people that it is unrealistic to not translate in your head from English to Spanish at times when you do have to pause and think at times. Especially when it comes to speak outside of the present tense to subjunctive and imperfect subjunctive, etc. Repetition of speaking the same thing over and over keeps you from thinking English to Spanish.
My 5th to add on to yours is: don't try to use complex words or verbs that you read and will not remember or the person speaking to will not understand.
I could say to my friend who is learning:
me eché a comer instead of comencé a comer.
te echo de menos instead of te extraño.
a few examples.
No need to be fancy until you have a grasp on natural speaking verbs that most are taught.
Good stuff!
Thank you for your input!
I can relate to what you are saying. I remember using un reto, never desafiante. Maybe desafiante has a stonger meaning for challenge. Maybe it is more used in Mexico. But if someone said to me before this video desafiante, I would not have known what they meant. Maybe I could have figured it out based on context. Un reto seems in my opinion more used and easier to remember lol.
¡Qué buen método! Muchas gracias.
¡Gracias, de nada!

Do more vídeos, classes. Thanks.
Woww qué nivel! Felicitaciones!
Muchas gracias!
I love the way you bring the lesson, I would like more spanish than english. Thanks
Several year I've been learning
I really enjoy wondering why a word is a certain way because I am really pattern seeking and want to understand how spanish words connect to latin or french and if that word came into english via the English aristocracy after the norman conquest
This is great advice.
I'm glad you resonated with it!
