Bravo! I love the wall of sound created using seemingly the whole piano! Well done.

Interesting parallels to Liszt’s Second Ballade

Respect for the pianist who went to the trouble of rehearsing such an uncomfortable, boring, unimaginative and clumsy piece. I loved César Franck from my first encounter with his violin sonata; it will always remain a mystery to me how he was able to undergo this incredible development - I don't think there is any great composer for whom the difference in quality between the early and late works is as enormous as in his case. "Prélude, Choral et Fugue", the Piano Quintet, the Violin Sonata, the Variations Symphoniques, "Les Djinns", the D minor Symphony, the String Quartet, the Organ Chorales: immortal masterpieces to my ears; I hope I haven't forgotten anything in this list... Some other pieces: Respectable to good. Most of the early works: unenjoyable...

Yes, that's true, although I think "Prélude, Choral et Fugue" is even better. But if you think about it - "Les Eolides", "Psyche", "Le chasseur maudit" and much of "Les Béatitudes" are also great. I think many of the earlier organ works are rather overrated, but of course they also contain many very good passages...

Suffers from the same kitsch melodic and lyric tonal harmony that Liszt's lesser compositions display. Needless to say both of them left us with several masterpieces. This is not one of them.

Well that' was a big glob of sound and fury signifying nothing. Franck was a very late bloomer to be sure, but it's interesting to note that this bit of juvenilia doesn't give any hint of the genius that would eventually unfold. I commend the pianist for learning it though. I hope he derived some satisfaction from it.

i would disagree. Already his first works i think are visionary.

I admit i gave up midway. It is disappointingly tedious... but also, as you said, it means composers are not necessarily "born geniuses". Btw i just checked : the sonata for violin and piano was written when he was 63, and the prelude chorale and fugue, at 61. I had no clue 🤷
