Had mine replaced recently by Litchfield. The irony is, if you take your car to BMW for a service with a replacement crank hub, despite the fact the replacement crank hub is far stronger and better engineered they will tell you it invalidates the warranty, as they expect you to replace it with another original inferior crappy BMW sourced crank hub... Crazy what they will do to get out of a honouring a warranty.

Interesting and informative video, thank you so much.
Fortunately I have an OG M2 so this won't affect me but I have always wondered about the S55 problem, and this helped me understand.

I’ve heard the n55 also has the same crank hub. But you’re right, I never really heard the same thing happening like on the s55

@@MarkCalica Yes it is the same none pinned crank hub in both, I have never heard of any crank hub failure in an N55 engine.
The engines are very similar around 75% identical, both 3 litre, but the bore of the S55 is 89.6mm v 84mm for the N55, also the stroke was 80mm for the S55 v 89.6mm for the N55. This enables it to rev slightly higher 7600rpm.
The S55 is a closed deck v the open deck N55.
The N55 has a twin scroll single turbo, the S55 has a twin turbo.
The cooling system is different, the S55 has a charge cooler, the N55 a traditional intercooler.
There are supposedly 16 differences in the cooling system. The S55 has FOUR water pumps, and EIGHT radiators !
Both have forged con rods and crank, but the S55 has forged pistons.
Oil supply system is different too, fuel system (S55 has TWO high pressure fuel pumps).

Howcome only the exhaust side is out if they share the same timing
chain and gear? Genuinely interested as i have an m4 running hybrids and should probably implement a fix.

Why bmw design it like that, for such an performance car isn’t this considered recall or miss development? These should cover by bmw then

It typically is only a risk to cars that have been modified to produce more power etc. Stock you should never really suffer the issue... 'should'

It’s mostly tuned s55. I’ve got 120k on a 2015 s55 m4 , completely stock and has had an easy life going up and down the motorway. As soon as these are tuned beyond the stresses that they were tested then you are open to some issues.
