    There are so many categories bodies can fit into! What's some of yours?

    • @MorningClarity
      @MorningClarity ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The most significant realization for me has been that I (am not the only one to) have "Violin Hips", "hip dips", "shelf hips", and a long rise. Apparently these often go together anatomically. I had always been told I had long legs, and I am long from my high waist to the floor, but it's not all legs! 🤣 The significance is mostly in how pants fit my body, or NOT. 12.5" high rise is a little low on me!? So high, relatively small waist (but not overall "short torso") which is the "shelf hips" label referred to above, AKA a "spoon" body type I think.
      I also have a long neck and smallish head, so I look taller than my 5'5" measures.

      I didn’t know I had a short neck😢 but I’m not gonna let it bother me I’ll just deal like I always have like wearing V-neck tops and three-quarter sleeves.

      Hey Jules,
      I’m so glad you’ve started covering vertical & horizontal body shapes.
      I was told by 1 stylist I’m an inverted triangle (my shoulders are 1” wider than my hips) & another one day that I’m an hourglass. But I’ve definitely got a short torso x

    Just a suggestion, there is also profile difference between body types. Makes huge difference. Like when the buttox is more on the muscular or flat side, the size of breast plays a huge role here. For example I look mostly balanced from the front, and my shoulders are pretty wide, but turning to the side becomes obvious that I’m a pear shaped. My girls are so small compared to how tall I am

      I work as Style and Image Consultant and you are totally right about that. Analysing just the front of your body is not 100% accurated. Two people can have the same proportion looking the front body, but one can have more bum than the other, or their back is wider. We are 360 figure and all that has to be considered.

    I've only just found your channel and I couldn't be more excited to learn these tips for body shape and vertical style. I've always been long legged, but years of a degenerative spinal condition has shortened my torso and neck even further. I used to looove high rise wide leg pants but now I look like I'm missing a torso if I style in the way I used to before I began to 'shrink'. Picking up so many good tips that will help me compensate for my condition and still dress with style. Thank you!

    The worst part about having a short torso, is that high waisted stuff ends up hitting the ribs and then I can't breathe when I sit. It also makes weight changes much more obvious. Does anyone else have that problem? I'm also more rectangle, as well as enjoying more androgynous style, so I tend to wear men's jeans or chinos because of that. They're not as high waisted, and don't look super baggy in the hips. I also tend to make things for myself. Parachute pants are a fun way to balance out wider shoulders, and they're super easy to sew. But the foot one was interesting, I have really big feet because I typically wear US women's 9.5-10 wide although I'm around 5'6.

    I only just found you and I have loved this first video.
    I am quite short, with a short waist and hardly any neck - but my overall body shape impact will almost never reveal itself as I’m permanently sat down... but in my dreams I’m tall and running down a sandy beach, wearing a floaty, wispy, midi length, fit and flare dress, tousled in a sea breeze...!
    (I can get away with wearing the highest of killer heels though, and they almost never wear out!)

    i have a average torso but I think the difficulty with my styling is that I am triangle shaped, my shoulders are wider than my hips... but I have a small bust. almost all the styling I see online shows triangle bodies as have a bigger bust but they don't work on me since the chest part is usually too loose on me.

  • @kimberlyperrotis8962
    @kimberlyperrotis8962 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There are some great tips in your approach: 1. Using the shoulders, not the bust, to determine body shape, which is the shape of one’s frame (bone structure). Any body shape can naturally have large, average or small bust sizes, it not related to the shape if one’s frame at all, and of course, surgery is used a lot to adjust bust size 2. I agree, the neck and head are not included in assessing the relative torso/leg proportion, but are important for styling (one of my styling challenges is having a very small head/face, hands and feet for my height, they’re not really in proportion to my body).

    this is great because so many videos about body types say that pears should never wear low rise jeans, but i love how i look in them, and i’m definitely a pear. then i realized with this vid that oh my god my torso is so short, and the low rise jeans balance it out! all this to say the basic “if you’re this fruit don’t wear this” does not work for everyone. for me i’d say my vertical proportions are far more important to pay attention to than my horizontal ones.

    I have found your content so helpful! I'm the same body type as you, just with some extra weight. 5'5", 8.5 feet, hourglass, short torso, long neck. After falling for the "high waisted pants are universally flattering" line I couldn't figure out why I looked and felt like Steve Urkel. It wasn't until I learned that my torso is short that I realized my best rise is about 8.5-9 inches but I can still wear those 10" rise jeans with a high neck shirt and leaving enough shirt untucked to cover the beltline.

    I tried your method with a twist. I wore a skin colour bikini to keep least distraction. Took a picture of myself from the front and the back with the help of a camera on a tripod. Printed the picture out and marked all the points from the shoulders to the hips. This actually turned out pretty well because without measurements I could clearly see that I am an inverted triangle when I joined all the points.

    When I shop for clothes, I like to view my body from all sides while standing. I think it is equally important to view your body while seated.
    Often times I like how my clothes look while standing but may not like the outfit seated because clothing can tug, grab, drape strangely or show more cleavage, rolls or skin than desired. I think it would be helpful if you created a video on how clothes appear when seated. This is especially important for women working in an office. This subject is often missing in fashion influencer videos.

I have a barely average torso that's almost short. A longish neck or an average neck to the long side (1 hand plus 3 fingers). And a shortish foot. My average bracket started at 6.5, I wear 6-6.5 depending on the brand. Lol. I love that I could say I'm average in everything or obsess about these tiny differences. Decisions, decisions. Using your tests I have a long torso, but proportionally my legs are definitely the longest part of me. So I’m a short, rectangular, but tall body type? 😅 No wonder the usual ‘rules’ have never worked for me. I guess I should look at styles for tall rectangular people and just scale down? It will be an interesting experiment!

    I have a very small bust but wide-ish shoulders, so whenever I did the calculations with the bust measurement it gave me a pear result every time, but the style tips never seemed to work. Tried with the shoulders, and it's pretty much 1:1 with my hips... hourglass. No f-ing wonder.

    Wait- but what about... if you have an average torso, but short legs? I don't think I'm balanced, I think my legs are short... but you didn't give a way to measure if you have long legs or short legs. 😢

    I did the tests and it seems that I have a balanced torso (my belly button is right where my hand ends), but I also have long skinny legs. I can also fit three fingers between the bottom of my rib cage and the top of my hip bone.

    Love your videos! I'm a brunette Jules and I've struggled with dressing (and hating) my short torso my whole life. Ugh! Thank you so much for exposing these struggles! Long torso peeps just don't get it. Would LOVE to see a video from you about workout wear. I'm finding it nearly impossible to find any workout leggings that aren't super high rise with that aggravating (and uncomfortable) skinny elastic at the very top. Keep up the fantastic work! 😊

    Great video ever cause I didn't know what shape I am in even though watch many videos. This is some kinds of way I can change my style finally. I already know I have long leg and neck caused most of the people around me said when I was young but now I realized that I have short all in 😢😢 that's why I didn't fit in style of long people wear.

    • @julieme7927
      @julieme7927 ปีที่แล้ว

      The measurements for an hourglass are supposed to be equal (or very nearly) for hips, shoulders and bust and your waist must be 25% smaller than that.

    I find this really tricky, because for example, my hips and shoulders apparently are the same width, but visually I look like an inverted triangle because my arms are... How to put it? Thicker, so visually my upper area is bigger. Now, this video says I have a long torso but my legs are not specially short, I would say they're proportional to the rest of my body, but my waist is below my ribcage, that would mean that my waist is really short. Todays fashion is driving me crazy because the t-shirts are ridiculously short for me and if I wear high waisted pants I look like Humpty Dumpty I'm going crazy because I dont have clothes that I really like anymore, I cant buy anything in the current fashion style which its the same one from when I was 12 and I couldn't find anything then either 😢

    Silly question but when measuring your vertical body shape using your hands, are you including your thumb or just the width of your fingers? Bit hard to tell because I think I see some overlap?

    • @JulesBeth
      @JulesBeth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Include the thumb! It's not perfect, and I've done it so many times, that my form can get sloppy. But it's an art not a science 😋

    Seems kind of complicated and tiring but I would love to be able to wear any style I want.. But idk, I feel like my body/face is just slightly too masculine/elegant to wear anything that isn't, to me, boring politician clothes x) Or maybe I should just wear elegant clothes and trust that most of my more creative personality won't fade..

    The hands to measure torso also doesnt work for everyone because I have a long torso but my bellybutton is high so by that test my torso is “average” but the extra length is below my belly button 😆
