The game they're singing about is a Japanese version of hide and seek where they are being chased by an oni, a Japanese ogre. In the game, stuffed animals are used for the ogres. There is also a reference to red shoes being dangerous, that's an old tale parents would tell their kids as a way to have them be wary of foreigners. The story was that children would be seen by foreigners and kidnapped, so you didn't want to stand out in the crowd, hence why you shouldn't wear red shoes.

There was an interview with Mikiko Mizuno, Babymetal's choreographer, she was asked what involvement band manger Koba, has with the choreography. Her reply was he only asks what are the crowd doing at this point, can they interact. So everything Babymetal do is built to interact with the crowd.
As others have said it is a game of hide and seek, where they are hiding from an Oni. The way they attract the Oni is by clapping. But there is a clever part were the girls become the oni and the crowd clap, so the crowd are the ones being hunted.

Yep, Tales of the Destinies is the song that musicians love because it's a tribute to the Dream Theater so basically it's like the Dream Theater but Petrucci is a lolita
Another fun one is Iine (not Line, Iine with two i), probably the best one from the early days before the Kami band, basically went like this
Koba: I want a new song
      Su: Girls, any ideas?
Yui: how many genres should we mix?
      Moa: Yes
Then Onedari Daisakusen is my favorite from Black Babymetal (Yui & Moa sing and Su absent or just backup)
Also more fun with: Yava, Papaya, Sis anger, Song 4 (where Su challenged Moa and Yui to make a song with number 4 (unlucky number in Japan), Starlight (made as a tribute to Mikio (the second guitarist) who died in 2018 when he fell from a high observation deck while stargazing (his other passion), Da Da Dance, Oh Majinai (folk metal because why not, they already did every other genre), Ijime Dame Zettai, Death (a must for the live performance), and maybe Akatsuki unfinished that is the one you already did but the entire song is like the intro with a Su solo

a little explication about the lyrics: when Sue says Tagger, she says Oni-san that would mean in another context mr demon, and when she says that the red shoes are dangerous its about Akai Kutsu song a famous Japanese nursery rhyme based on a true story, that its a warning for the girls to dont wear red shoes or stand out in general, cuz a a young girl with red shoes

Just so everyone knows, the intro to Rondo of Nightmare is called "Mischief of the Metal Gods". This intro is called "Wrath of the Metal Gods". The funny thing is when they toured the US for this album, both Takayoshi Ohmura (the guitarist with Pink Chan - the twinkling ESP Snapper) and BOH (the bassist) interspersed the Star Spangled Banner in their solos.
Also, this is still from Budokan Black Night, so these is the same members of the Kami Band that played Rondo of Nightmare. That would be Leda Cygnus (he's on the black ESP here), Ohmura, BOH, and Hideki Aoyama. For Red Night, Leda Cygnus was swapped out for Mikio Fujioka. If you're impressed with what Takayoshi Ohmura did, keep in mind that Mikio taught him.
However, what's getting you about the song is the story.. You won't find any other band in the world that will sing a song about playing hide and seek with a demon. Go on, try to find another one.. We'll be here waiting!

"You won't find any other band in the world that will sing a song about playing hide and seek with a demon."
There is the Ningen Isu song 'Namahage'. It's about the same kind of Japanese ogres as this song.
It's even got "Are there any lazy fellows around? Are there any crybabies around?" in the lyrics.
'Catch Me If You Can' was released first though. : )

Excellent reaction and analysis again, thank you. This is indeed a song about playing hide & seek - or a game that is similar but it is also a sort of cross with tag and blind man's bluff ... and the "tagger" is an Oni (or pretending to be an Oni at least), which is a sort of Japanese ogre.
The Oni is something used to scare kids (in the best possible way) into behaving themselves, so the "Are there any cry babies here" and "Are there any naughty kids here" is simply referencing that - nothing more sinister.
So yes the 'demonic' vocals on the back track are the Oni asking things like "Are you ready?" and by far the best response has to be "Maada da yo" (No, not yet) while doing a running away from an Oni dance.
I have no doubts a lot of people have done themselves an injury watching this song and trying to emulate the running dance round their living rooms while shouting out "Maada da yo" (but I am admitting absolutely nothing).
Also yes you are absolutely right, this is not a song that shows off Su-metal's vocal range etc, but she is playing a part in the story of the song, so doing everything she needs to in that role - it all fits, it is pure entertainment and this is one of their fun songs, they have other deeper and more meaningful songs where she brings in the emotions and gets to express herself, but they are for other parts of the show.
The guitarists swapped their order from the 'Rondo of Nightmare' intro, so this time Takayoshi Ohmura went first, he played the second solo in the RoN intro, Leda Cygnus went second, he was first solo for RoN.
You are definitely understanding what BABYMETAL are about a lot better now - had this been one of your first reactions I suspect you would have scored it more like (but still not the same as) 'Gimme Chocolate' and 'Doki Doki Morning'.
So what is next from BABYMETAL? Whatever it is I'm one of those who is requesting it.

Just to add a bit more. Tag in Japanese is "Oni gokko". 'Oni' is devil/demon, and 'gokko' is make believe/pretend/play. Hide and seek is "kakurenbo", which they actually mention in the song. In a game of hide and seek (and tag maybe) there is a typical call and response between the players. The person who is "it" (the oni) calls out "Mou ii kai?" (Are you ready?) and the response is "Mada da yo!" (Not yet) or "Mou ii yo" (Ok). As mentioned, the only strange translations that seem suspicious are in the section by the Oni calling out, "Naku ko inai ka?" (Are there any crying kids?) and "Warui ko inai ka?" (Are there any bad children?) but these are typical Demon calls often used during setsubun (a widely held festival in the spring) and as mentioned the Namahage (Limited to northern Japan) around new years I think. So these calls wouldn't be perceived as inappropriate or wrong in the Japanese context.

Its a cultural thing. Japanese traditional game, combination of tag and hide-n-seek, where kids run from a demon, teasing it..and it eats them if possible. Metal.
Any many other cultural things confusing westerners. Lots of meanings in everything they do.

Another outstanding reaction and analysis. Thanks!
Definitely one of their heaviest songs but it has one of their cutest choreos including my favorite movement: the infamous "Moa slide", which you obviously noticed :)
This was my very first BABYMETAL song so it's very special to me. The lyrics could sound childish at first sight, but it's full of dark elements like the fact they are playing against an ogre or even a reference to the "red shoes" already explained in the comments.
    Until next time!

So this cute song is about playing a game that is kind of like hide-and-go-seek, with some tag and blind-man's bluff mixed in.
Pursued by an "Oni"" which is a kind of Japanese Ogre.
If not a real monster, than at least someone pretending to be one in order to terrify children.
Fun times! Kawaii Metal! : )
If much of their charm is in the blending of the cute and the brutal, this song is a great example, turned up to eleven.
They performed this song quite a bit in 2017, but not since.
The last time I saw this one was in Chula Vista, California when they were on tour opening for Korn.
I'd highly recommend the Ningen Isu song 'Namahage'. It covers the same subject matter.
To be fair, the BABYMETAL song was released first, but I don't think Ningen Isu had it in mind when they wrote their song.

Great rection as always David!!! "Catch Me If You Can" was the first song I heard from BABYMETAL. And the first impression I was like: "wtf is this I'm watching?" But at the end of the song I was already singing the part "guruguru kakurenbo" along with Su-Metal (hahaha this verse is so catchy). And this is still the song that defines BABYMETAL (for me), the combination of cute and metal is perfect, even the lyrics plays with it: a darker Hide and Seek.
My next recommendation for you to react is "BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL)" - a historic performance that represents BABYMETAL's worldwide debut.

Babymetal at it's core is about the girls and this song is happy, innocent and energetic and metal without the aggression just like the girls are.
I think they make it light by using their voices and keeping the singing melodic ?
And it really is how the girls are, for example Babymetal got to perform on the big stage (20 000 people) for the first time at a festival in Japan, some fans were a bit worried are they ready, etc.
But from some tweets by a reported who was back stage, everyone was very relaxed and it shows they really still were kids:
"...in the backstage area, Yui-chan and Moa-chan were chasing grasshoppers together in harmony, and Su-chan quietly watched over them with a smile like a female bodhisattva, I saw that and was very healed."
"a continuation of the previous tweet... A grasshopper was caught by Moa-chan but managed to escape (since Moa grabbed it gently). Then, Moa-chan said to it "Bye-bye" waving her hands... I would do say once more... she bade it good-bye waving her hands... (It's so adorable that) I was nearly floored."
I think that's the kind of innocence by the girls they are trying to capture in the song writing/performance. Which is also why when they got older the tone of the music changed.

Really glad you enjoyed this song. To me this is a just a really fun song and is one of my personal favorites. Great pace, beat, all around sound and of course the girls choreography is too cute and fun. And you got it. You laughed when I am sure we all do, when Moa does the slide under Su and ends in a cute pose. BABYMETAL is just fun. They have that ability to make you smile as well as headbang.
I really like Yui and Moa starting the song and then Su's beautiful voice joins in later. Of course it is always great to have the Kami band do the intro too. They do a few more intros too.
Looking forward to more reactions to BABYMETAL. As I said in a reply comment, I am super curious what you will think of Yui and Moa doing their Black BABYMETAL songs. I personally love GJ and Onedari Daisakusen. All 4 are fun though. BUT you really should do BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL) as others have requested. It is Historic. 🤘🦊🤘

You got the guitar players mixed. In Rondo, the 1st to go was "Leda Cygnus", 2nd was Takayoshi Ohmura (pink guitar here). In this song they started the solos the other way around. But good job recognizing Ohmura's playing style after hearing just a couple solos.

Anyway, good reaction. You seem to be getting more accustomed to the kawaii side of BM, which means it's only a matter of time before you're -lost forever- a true fan. Hooray! I've seen some requests for Tales of the Destinies and some for Ijime, Dame, Zettai (IDZ). I think either of those would be good options, though you should know that the only live performance of the former will get blocked on YT unless you obscure it somehow - put a translucent logo over the video or blur it or something.

One thing you mentioned about about the crowd singing. The girls have explained this in interviews. The BIG difference between Japanese and American crowds is that Japanese crowds sing with the two girls and Americans sing with Su. (Though in recent concerts, Americans do more of singing with the girls)

Who would have thought that BABYMETAL would get so many 9+ scores from you? I‘m especially happy that this is also true for this one, as it‘s one of the more playful songs. I didn‘t expect that, to be honest.
In my opinion, this is one of the songs where it’s really rewarding to read the lyrics and watch the choreography with them in mind. They are tied so closely together that it‘s really fun to watch. I love Su looking all around for the other girls at the beginning, and Yui and Moa ducking away and hiding behind their palms. A nice detail is how they made use of the stage at the Budokan venue, with Su standing on the raised platform looking over the other girls‘ heads.
The lyrics are indeed about a game of Hide and Seek, but the Metal twist is that they are playing with an Oni, which is a creature from Japanese folklore that‘s somewhere between an ogre and a demon, represented by the growling voice and Su at the beginning.
BABYMETAL love to incorporate traditional stuff into their lyrics and their music, and that‘s where the „naughty kids“ come into play: There‘s a tradition on Oga peninsula called Namahage, where villagers dressed as Oni with frightening masks pretend to descend from the mountains into the villages while shouting, and basically scare the kids into behaving properly, and encouraging the elderly to continue leading a good life. It‘s quite an interesting sight for Western eyes to see, the kids are scared sh*tless and crying, while their parents around them are often laughing. th-cam.com/video/sabdAI0z0YA/w-d-xo.html
I hope you are not disappointed to hear that you were not quite right about the guitarists during the solos. While they were the same ones as in Rondo, the sequence was switched, so the one with the more melodic parts (second solo in Rondo, first one this time) was the same one both times. Same goes for the more shreddy parts.

  • @Glynthepin
    @Glynthepin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Wow! 9.1 definitely worth waiting until a convenient time for me and i guessed in the high 8 points. Only in Japan could children play hide and seek with an ogre or devil! The references to naughty children is from Japanese culture where misbehaved children are threatened with a visit from an ogre or devil if they continue to misbehave. Hence they have to hide from the ogre and devil when they have misbehaved. Hope that makes sense? 😄
You get a great demonstration in this song of how important Moa and Yui are to the performance. They have talking and singing parts in this song to a greater extent than others.
There is a big push for you to react to Tales Of The Destiny's but I will request an earlier song as you will see when they were at a younger age than they are here, that they can entertain a rock festival crowd!

There is a festival still held in towns in Japan that surrounds around one aspect of the Oni. Parents go to the person who will dress as Oni and tell him specific acts of misbehavior of their kids and then on the day of the festival Oni will show up at the houses and will recite to the kid the specific bad deeds the child had done scaring the kid into (hopefully) better behavior. No one wants Oni to show up twice.
The absolute beauty of this song is the girls are actually taunting and calling for Oni - an ogre/demon/spirit type thing - to try to find them.
It was pretty intuitive of you to realise the song is about more than hide and seek. May I suggest leaving translation alone. The girls dancing tell the story much better than lazy English translation.

  • @rantingrodent416
    @rantingrodent416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah! You got it exactly. All of the drive and power that makes metal great, but without the heavy baggage that modern metal usually comes with. I enjoy my heavy songs, too, but sometimes I just want to have a good time listening to my music and they serve that up so well. I also love how this song rapidly changes gears into a 2000s pop punk feel for the chorus. There's a bunch of that kind of influence in their music, and it's always an excellent bridge between their metal and pop aspects.
You've been recommended pretty much every song of theirs at this point, I imagine. Looking forward to the next one, whichever it is!

I enjoyed it much. It is great to see the integrity of your channel management again. Of course 'This is your channel', so do what you want with it, haha. I am not an expert in music, so your musical commentary is very informative. But your attitude of trying to follow even your lyrics, is wonderful. It is indeed hard, but as a Japanese, I want to share the wonderful world of BM's lyrics with the world. 'Hide and seek' is the main motif of this song, but there are other quotations in the lyrics, including the following,
    Tag
    Namahage
    Red Shoes
The part Su- sings, 'Hey Tagger, come forward my clapping!', they were really playing with the backtracking Tagger, they look cute at first glance, but if we're not careful and try to join in, the Tagger might rip us apart and kill us, lol.
The part, 'crybabies here?, naughty kids here?', is from 'Namahage', and it is a traditional Japanese New Year's event in which a person dressed as Ogres go from house to house, and lecturing children in a scary but very funny manner.
The part, 'You should not wear red shoes', this is a line from a famous Japanese children's song, 'Red Shoes'. It is a sad song, "The girl who wore red shoes was taken away by a foreigner'. But there are several interpretations of the lyrics, and it is generally thought that the girl was kidnapped by a foreigner, but there is another one that the song is about the sadness of parting, when a girl with no relatives is taken by a foreign missionary back to his home country. Either way, it is a sad and lonely song.
There is actually a scary side to hide-and-seek in Japan. It means it is scary for the children themselves and for their parents. There were times when children would get so absorbed in their play that they would get lost in the mountains or even fall into the river. Parents feared that this was a form of 'Spiritual away', 'Hiding by the God' and would take their children to their home, telling them not to play hide-and-seek, especially after dusk. In fact, there used to seem to be also kidnappings for the purpose of human trafficking.
From the child's point of view, it can be interpreted as, 'I was hiding and waiting for a long time, but no one found me. And before I knew it, there was no one left'. It is a very lonely and a little scary feeling. This kind of darkness and fear is one of the common characteristics of Japanese nursery rhymes and folk tales.
I think BABYMETAL understands these characteristics well. They express some scary at the breakdown. And intro of this song also starts with a scary vibes, using the sound of Western bells and shoes. So they don't just incorporate nursery rhymes into Metal music because they are cute. So I think it's a theme that fits with Metal unexpectedly. That's why it's so shocking.
I like Chick Corea too. He came to my hometown in Japan for his concert a few years before he passed away (R.I.P.). I love 'Spain'.
Also, I think the riff in this song is a quote from Slipknot's 'sic', 'Eyeless', but this is from a Japanese fan's website, lol.
    Thank you from Japan.

wow a lot higher than I would expect, shows why lot of babymetal fans top 10 lists are so different. I was honestly surprised you rated it higher than Megitsune (maybe do a live?).
I always thought the song was about them trolling the demons coming to get them.
Regarding the breakdown and the "are there any crybabies here?" and "are there any naughty kids here?" I would think that's related to the Namahage tradition. Men would dress up as demons with ogre masks and straw costumes. And they would break in (with parent's permission) to seek misbehaving children. They would say those things as they would look for the children in the house. Its kind of a early scared straight program lol.
I think you are almost done with the songs of the first album that you would like, next I would suggest "BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL)." Don't know if you've begun figuring out which one is Moa and which one is Yui yet, but if you were wondering the one who went between Su's legs and struck the pose you liked was Moa.
Kagerou is a newer BM song that also includes an instrumental introduction. Unfortunately I don't know of a video that only contains footage of a single performance that includes the instrumental introduction, but this video does a pretty good job of seamlessly splicing the video footage from multiple shows together such that the only way I can tell (although I may not be the most observant person out there) is when the third dancer with Su and Moa changes (the footage is all professional recordings from various shows on their 2019-2020 US and European tour, so after Yui left and different musicians, but still highly talented): th-cam.com/video/jMIxIG9DuRY/w-d-xo.html

You really need to do IDZ (Ijime, Dame, Zettai) from Sonisphere 2014 by now. This was the performance that pretty much started it all. Long story short, they were suppose to play on a small stage but due to the hype from Gimme Chocolate and some of their soldout shows in Europe pior to Sonisphere, they were moved to the mainstage. This was the girls first actual metal festival outside of Japan, so they were understandably nervous. There were rumours that some metalheads were planning on throwing stuff at them for being gimmicky. This song was the last song of a 30min set. You can see the results. And you really need to add Babymetal's performance with Rob Halford to your reaction list... Or the one where Su is singing Breaking the Law and Painkiller with Chad from RHCP on the drums, the most wholesome ending you will ever see in a metal concert. 🤘🦊🤘

So, her slide under Su isn't done anymore. I always wanted to see a video of the first time she couldn't do it. Did she knock Su over? Su was like ok that's it we're done with that choreography. lol I just think that had to be funny when they realized Moa was too big to do it. One of the great things about Babymetal is their live concerts but also in their diverse songs. You may not care much for one song and yet love the very next song you hear by them. That's going to happen when you mix genres as much as they do. Enjoy the ride through the Babymetal galaxy of music.

There are live intros to several songs of theirs. Yava, Awadama Fever, Catch Me If You Can and of course, Rondo Of Nightmare.
The intro to Rondo of Nightmare is its own song by itself called Mischief of the Metal Gods. The intros to Catch Me, Yava, and Awadama Fever are each unique, but all flow into the song, and are not individual songs unlike Mischief. Akatsuki also had an intro once. Akatsuki's intro was only done for one year and is ALSO a song of its own. It's an outside festival where you can see the crowd go crazy with responding and circle pits. Their newer concerts actually have louder crowd participation. Like in Headbanger there are more of that and in CMiYC. Also I feel like you could move to some slightly newer stuff of theirs? Not like immediately 2018 and newer, but 2015-2016 era. Or maybe check out Black Babymetal which is Yui and Moa singing as a duo. Onedari Daisakusen from Budokan 2014 is definitely available on youtube. I'm suggesting from the first album since I feel like going from their earliest stuff works great here. Otherwise it'd be GJ or Sis Anger.

They each said a sentence once at the end of a London Wembley gig and Su asks crowds if they're feeling good in the middle of 'Megitsune' but that's about it. They don't do encores either but neither do most Japanese bands, as it's considered rude to ask for more as it implies the artists haven't given their all already. And Babymetal always give it their all.

Just a reminder that Babymetal is japanese so there is some cultural differences to be aware of and there are no official translations of the japanese lyrics (as far as I know) so these fan translations might not be really accurate. But most people already explained what the song is about.
Really like your reviews, hope you will do more.

It's a song about hide and seek. They call the tagger as Oni-san in Japan. Oni means ogre or demon. About demon voice asking are there any naughty kids, I believe it's reference to Namahage. Namahage is some kind of demon who kidnapped lazy and naughty kids. Japanese even have Namahage festival every year where they scare children to death to make children behave 😁.

Su-Metal said that Yuimetal was scared of the Oni voice on this song. Again I recommend Ijime, Dame, Zettai at Sonosphere 2014. And it's time to listen "The One," Babymetal's love letter to the fans. Another thing you may want to listen to is the Kami Band's tribute to Mikio. They did a non-Babymetal show. I don't know what they actually called themselves. th-cam.com/video/a4-WF3Su3sI/w-d-xo.html
The first solo guitarist here was the second one on "Rondo."

It wasn't the Oni voice that scared Yui.
Su mentioned in several interviews that it was the footstep sounds at the beginning of the song.
She described it as "kon kon, catchi catchi catchi".
Yui wanted to skip over that part during playback.
Su and Moa had fun scaring her with it.

When reacting to Babymetal, or any other young band, I encourage you to look at when the song was recorded.
Their self-titled first album was released in 2014, and the girls were extremely young. However, for the most part this is a compilation album, featuring songs thar had been recorded as early as 2010. This is one reason why the first album has more of a "cute" feel to it.
Most of the tracks on their second album, Metal Resistsnce, were never heard before the album's release. The biggest exception being "Road of Resistsnce", which was performed live and then released about a year before the album's release - and "Karate" which was released a few weeks before the album.
Then there's the third album, "Metal Galaxy". This one is kind of odd, because "Distortion" was released about 17 months before the album, and a handful of other tracks were released and performed months before the album's release. So when the album finally arrived, much like the first album, fans were familiar with many of the songs already.

That's how you metal up a game of hide n seek. You need to remember these are still kids, so their stage presence and crowd control is even more impressive.i believe Su was 17 and Yui and Moa were 15. As for the kami band? Impressive as hell as usual.
Great analysis and reaction as usual. You still have a few years worth of catching up to do, so I'm looking forward to seeing you get more confused in the future. I guess hide n seek with a demon is fairly dark.
Babymetal Death . Legend 1997 maybe a good next step for you , or a little nudge into some Black Babymetal could be next.
    See you soon.

I think the guy who played the 1st solo on this is actually the guy who played the 2nd solo on Rondo. He's playing the same pink sparkly guitar too although it's hard to see in the dark and with coloured lights. And the guy who played 1st solo on Rondo plays the 2nd solo here.

yup ... you're not wrong , this song about hide and seek game with 1 or 2 Japanese folklore for children.
the intro for RoN is the only one that can be said as their own single song or music (if me not mistake) and the Kami band have few intro that perfectly blend with Babymetal songs.

As someone who migrated to Kyoto - the translation to "naughty" is not meant to be taken in a sexual way at all. It doesn't have that double meaning in Japanese. It's more meant as naughty/playful. I guess that if "rascaly" was a word, that'd be a better translation.

  • @ernestrimbeck7630

Too long to explain in full Nutshelled The girls are children playing outside, the Oni/Demon/Ogre is an adult authority figure like a parent/teacher/babysiter who is trying to get the children back inside Like in the Charlie Brown cartoon where the teachers/parents all talked "wha wha wha" here the authority figure sounds like a demon/oni/ogre in the children's imagination So it's sort of a double game of hide and seek

Great reaction as always. You are probably going to get a lot of messages saying you got the 2 guitarists mixed up. But tbf that is very easy to do with the face paint, robes and hair, later performances make it easier as Takayoshi (the one with the pink guitar) adds braids and usually has his hair in a topknot.

Dear Dave-metal, first I believe at this point you’ve already recorded the reaction to babymetal death and I am literally checking my phone twice a day to see if that video has dropped yet. Two (if your sill reading) as a lyricist and vocalist I can tell you that you can rest assured that there is never a nasty meaning behind babymetal lyrics. They can certainly be dark on certain tracks but babymetal is always without a doubt all about good clean positivity paired with nasty gnarly metal. All pure and all heavy! It’s why i and I assume many others love this group from its core up

As a fan of Babymetal without any professional knowledge about music I only can say I love this song, I love it's dark energy and I love the choreography. So I am always a little afraid that when you analyse every tiny aspect of it, it turns out to be a pretty average song. But I am glad it's not, and your profound information makes it even better for me. Just one thing you hardly mention, I absolutely LOVE this choreography! Good to know it's a fantastic song, even without it.
