    Great documentary. A small point though, the Sinhalese kingdom was called Anuradhapura, not Andrapura.

    they got lucky arriving when a cultured man with an interest in foreign languages was emperor and not Caligula or Nero

    • @rustyshackelford3590
      @rustyshackelford3590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Caligula would have insisted on showing them one of his massive palaces that he spent his fortune on and invite them to an orgy. Nero would have insisted they listen to him play an instrument and make them applaud or be killed.

      @@rustyshackelford3590 A Syrian gnostic named Bardaisan met Buddhist envoys near Emesa on their journey to meet the Roman Emperor. Bardaisan questioned the envoys and used their statements to compose an account of Indian religions that only survives in fragments quoted by later scholars. The Emperor at the time was Elagabalus…
      The ancient references are: Porphyry, Abstaining from Killing Animals, 4.17; Stobaeus, Eclogues, 3.56.141 ('Antoninus from Emesa' = Elagabalus).

    Imagine A conversation between a pagan Roman stoic philosopher, one of these Buddhist, and one of the early Christian apostles.

    • @markhackett2449
      @markhackett2449 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Pagan and the Buddhist would have found the apostle crass, uneducated, And irrelevant. At time of Claudius Christian's are extreme fringe sect of Judiasm.

      Mark Hackett Matthew was a tax collector so he was probably efficient in dealing with business, numbers, and calculations and was most definitely literate. Matthew 9:9
      Luke was also a very learned man being a physician. Colossians 4:14
      Paul had a traditional Jewish education, being taught by one of the more famous teachers of his time. "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel (a well known and prominent teacher at the time), taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today" (Acts 22:3).
      Bartholomew was most likely from a distinguished or wealthy family as indicated by his name which derives from the Aramaic name meaning "son of Talmai".Talmai either comes from telem "furrow" or is a Hebrew version of Ptolemy. Thus Bartholomew is either "son of furrows" (i.e., rich in land) or "son of Ptolemy". So being of a distinguished background typically one is educated highly due to there resources and expectations.
      Philip, James, John were fishermen but were also businessmen they employed others to work as fishermen for them. So they were probably educated in business and finance.
      The apostles would all have been well educated in the Old Testament, Hebrew Scriptures, and theology & some philosophy because at the time Judea had been hellenized by Greek influences for a few hundred years. They all would have been multi-linguistic knowing at least Hebrew and Aramaic, and possibly Greek and Latin. All all probably would have been able to read and write in multiple languages.
      Do these sound like the qualities of uneducated and crass men. And in terms of relevance, the message they were spreading was an answer they had to many philosophical questions about life. This assertion you have put on these men was of obvious bias and anti Christian rhetoric. You have not done any research or even had put a single thought into your comment. I suggest you educate yourself.

      @@rustyshackelford3590 He didnt mean those people in general, or anti-christian bias. The people who followed Jesus physically were obviously rich since they could leave their jobs and travel.
      He refers to the later people, the idiots who burned the Great Library, and the modern fanatics who rave and rant at slightest reason but are neither sane or followers of Jesus but instead have their own system which is just something that suits their delusions.
      Jesus would feel at home with the buddhist, but would have little in in common with many modern christians, who are just new pharisees at best.

      @@rustyshackelford3590 don t waste your precious time with such uneducated children. Anyway, you wrote some things i didn t know, thank you for that. I want to add, that lots of marcus aurelius' meditations made it into the bible and thus greek stoicism was one of the bases of early christianity.

    To The History of the Roman Empire and the Sinhalese Kings🌤
    Dear Sir
    Thank you for the info. The questions are in the trade networks which reached Sri Lanka in the BC times. The goods at trade in these times seem to be different and the transactions are in silver and gold but also in kind in the instances. The goods have moved to the study in religion and Buddhism reached Europe in the late
    BC cultures. There is also a question on Hinduism reaching Europe from India or Sri Lanka..
    The transactions in SriLanka have transmitted to other nations of Europe since the times of the Roman Empire and the terms of trade including the
    goods held for the transactions have transited.
    Wish you all the best in your endeavours for the future..
    Greetings from the Pacific

      Yes. Claudius probably presented himself as a ‘Master of the Ocean’. He even slaughtered a stray Orca (Killer Whale) that swam into the busy commercial harbour at Rome (Pliny, Natural History, 9.5). www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.02.0137%3Abook%3D9%3Achapter%3D5

    Dr.Raoul, I was always wondering about the fact, that Sri lanka was highly influenced my Indians in many ways , but why we couldn't locate advance hydrological engineering based civilization in south India?. Many great civilisations have emerged with the blessing of nature but it is very rare to observe engineered environments that turned hostile environments to flourishing cities. Was there any influences from Harrapan civilization?, the closest imaginable hydraulic civilization?

    Roman was Sri Lankan's biggest enemy in the past. At that time, Sri Lanka captured South India, Myanmar and Maldives.
    Because Sri Lanka had the best Navy and technological weapons in Asia, Sri Lanka helped Egypt against the Romans. So Sri Lanka is not an isolated county like Italy. Even Alexander also defeated by Great Ashok because Sri Lanka helped Great Ashok with Sri Lankan worries and weapons.
    Please don't hide information from Asian power. Instead, show Romans better than Asia-you cheeky Roman snake.

    • @shamaliwije4872
      @shamaliwije4872 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. If the time period discussed is 48-52 AD, then the king in Anuradhapura would be either King Chandramukaseewa or King Yasalalakathissa, according to the Mahawanshaya. However, it’s King Bhathika Abhaya who’s most connected with Rome in these writings. If we’re looking at a king immediately prior to that, we could be looking at King KutakannaThissa or King Kuda Thissa.
