In Defense Of Davis: The ‘Hated’ Digimon Leader

- Digimon Adventure 02 was a series that was burdened by comparison, having the impossible task of following up what came before. Davis too is burdened with comparison, having to follow up the legacy that came before.

Davis is flawed, but he's a fantastic main character because he's himself. He has the courage to never give up, always has faith in his friends, and takes two of those strengths to create a miracle. That's why he has those three crests.
I totally agree! He also sees the best in others and empowers them to overcome their weaknesses and play to their strengths. He helped save Ken from the darkness he was drowning in, just as he did for the whole team at the end of season 2. That's why he will always be my favorite digimon leader, and one of my top 3 favorite characters of all time. And all the hate on him only makes me love him more!
And bonus points to Davis for not getting a dark digivolution with Veemon!
Same here. That's why I liked him
Veemon*
Imagine if his dark evolution was Ellmon or Failuremon? It's the same as Veedramon but it just sucks.
Kudos indeed all I see though if there was a Dark Digivolution they could’ve have got BlackImperialdramon DM and FM as a possibility!! Also besides TK and Kari’s partners there was no direct Digivolution into Ultimate like Adventure 01 before and Tamers and Savers/Data Squad after it, only Jogress so it kinda limiting the possibility imo. Though Veemon and Wormmon have their solo lines in media, card series just not in Adventure 02 yet…
Kinda ironic that the biggest asshole out of the main characters is the only one who never went evil
I absolutely adore Davis for most of the reasons you nailed, and one more that I relate to him on: In the end, he realized what he had was a pretty simple dream, to live his life, do what he enjoyed, and have fun with the people he likes along the way. The others pushed themselves as they grew to do big things (Rockstar, Ambassador, TechGenius) or important things (Teacher, Parent), but Davis realized that a simple kind of happiness was good for him: Him, his buddy Veemon, and a Noodle Cart.
All the respect in the world for that.
@@ChronoShadow69 Davis became a millionare who got big selling ramen.
Some of us have been Davis fans for 22 years.
Me who 22 right now lmao
Davis was my hero growing up ❤
Amen to that lol
Preach it!
Yeah of course he’s me. Davis is always that guy.
I liked Davis because he was the only one of the protagonists to be self-aware of his own shortcomings affecting other people, which tends to be key source in Dark Digivolution that makes those characters in that moment, unlikable. In "Davis Cries Wolfmon," he prevents himself from making the same mistake Tai did when trying to digivolve Agumon by not purposefully putting himself into dangerous, reckless situations. And I like that self-awareness he has because it sticks with him even outside of this one episode, he admits he's not the brightest guy out there, and that's okay. Another example is in "Storm Of Friendship" where he admits he's been a coward and not a very good friend, and we never see him fall into that trap of avoiding responsibility as a friend and leader again.
It’s still crazy how Davis/Daisuke is so far the only protag in a main series Digimon anime whose Digimon partner didn’t get corrupted.
@@JapanFreak2595I know, right!? And thats what makes him stand out
@@JapanFreak2595Not to sure, but I don't recall Shoutmon ever being corrupted. Though as I said, not too sure
@@natexeon9957 Ah indeed, my mistake
@@JapanFreak2595Nah, I’d say about 50% of the protags don’t get dark digivolution. There was Vmon, Shoutmon, gumdramon, and agunimon, I think. And the ones who did are Agumon, Guilmon, the other Agumon, and Gammamon. Appmon who?
We all need a friend like Davis in our life, with courage, compassion, confidence, leadership, and determination to never give up until the end. Without him in 02, they could never defeated those powerful enemies, and Ken will never accepted enter their group, and battle with MaloMyotismon proved he was the one that hold the group together. I still remember the scene he cried for Willis in 02 movie, and in The Beginning, how he was angered and going to help directly after saw young Rui was abused, proves how much he care for the others.
I'm glad that I'm not the only person who found Davis relatable when I was younger. Was he an idiot? Yes, but his heart was always in the right place. He would speak out his honest thoughts and then get ridiculed for it by the others which he would always take to heart.
Also, I was rooting for him the entire time with his crush on Kari. Let's face it, he was a realistic pubescent boy whereas most of the other characters felt like they were way too mature beyond their years.
honestly, same. To younger me, while TK/Kari always got along, I never particularly saw them being close as a feeling of romance on both ends, but seeing Davis like Kari and kind of unabashedly like her made me wish he got the girl in the end
I wanted them to end up together, to be what Tai and Sora couldn’t.
Can't hate Davis, he got the drip before "DRIP" even invented
So true, I want that jacket
Facts that jacket was fire lol
I stan my head-empty goober boy who was literally too single-minded to be tricked by Myotismon's illusions.
Also just the narrative device of pairing up the deeply complex Ken with Dum Dum Davis, beautiful.
Before i disliked Davis but after rewatching season 2, i grew to see that Davis truly lived up to wielding the Digi Eggs of Courage and Friendship and why he was giving the Digi egg of miracles and he become my favorite in season 2
He extended his hand to Ken to join the team
He continued to fight against Malomyotismon where as the others grew fearful
Both Tai and Matt recognized and saw Davis as the leader of second generation of Digidesitned
Plus his dream of running a noodle cart is awesome, do what you enjoy
Davis was one of those characters who I genuinely clicked with from the moment I saw him. I've been real with my feelings, I've had a crush and I've allowed myself to say stupid things before that got on people's nerves. But what really sells Davis as a great character for me is how real he is and how real he feels.
You may not always agree with him, but nothing he ever says comes off as fake. The man kept it 💯 with everything he said and I respect that.
It's just a shame that Davis seemed the most distant from the rest of the cast. No one ever really knew him or how things were beneath the surface with him.
Honestly, Davis was my favorite character of that season and should have gotten more personal shine but I guess they had already decided beforehand that TK would be the character they'd focus on the most.
Sidenote: I do NOT like TK at all. He comes off as far too self righteous and preachy at times.
I like Davis/Daisuke because he's understanding. (Examples: Ken and BlackWarGreymon)
I don't _completely_ agree with this take, but I can respect it because DigiKnow did make some valid points about Davis' character. I, for one, liked how he was a decent foil to Ken
This.
I agree. If there is one big selling point to Davis’s character is his relationship with Ken.
Yep not a bulletproof argument but wanted to explain my thoughts on the character :)
@@thedigiknow I thought your argument was well-structured and concise
@@thedigiknowgood video
I think he's overhated in the west for how the english dub handled his character, daisuke later in the season is respected and he's no longer made fun of, but in that sub not only that aspect is extrapolated, like his stupidity but the cast being mean to him never stop, another detail among others is that daisuke in the sub never said takeru's name wrong, but in the dub they made a whole deal about it making him borderline unbearable, they replaced some really good character dialogue for stupid dates jokes, etc etc
There's a reason why in the west the second favorite season is tamers while in japan is 02, the dub ruined daisuke imo
But wasn’t the original Japanese version like that as well?
@@dwainsimmons3447 nope, I grew up with a faithful adaptation, later I watched the show subbed to realize most of the dialogue was the same but when I watched the english dub out of curiosity I caught me by surprise how different it was, for the worse.
The voices were good (with the excepcion of wormmon, he sounds like an old man) but the dialogue is such a downgrade
OMG thank you for talking about this! I watch Dubbed first and I absolutely hate Davis. Like, he’s borderline a badly portrayed privileged character so when I watched subbed I absolutely loved his character as it felt more like someone learning that everyone doesn’t have the same privilege as he did growing up (ie; Iori loosing his dad, Hikari and Takeru trauma from last adventure, the entire Ken arc) and growing as a leader and character by being their pillar or support
@@saitohajime9939 Daisuke is my favorite character, it's painful to see the mischaracterization he gets by people thaks to the terrible english dub.
I c so that's why toei & bandai milking 1999 over and over beyond dry with little to no new generation & design. It has been made up that 1999 is polished compared to any others. I guess this is the reason this franchise is museumized compared to pokemon.
Davis/Daisuke is without a doubt the most underrated leader in the franchise. When him and X-Veemon were the ONLY ones to step up and face the final boss I think truly defined his character. He exhibited true courage and friendship by also being there for his friends when they needed him the most.
Davis/Daisuke was my favorite as a kid (cuz Flamedramon was super cool), but I found that as I got older and my perspective on life broadened, I connected with his character in such a profound way. Just gonna list em off so here goes:
- Not particularly bright as kids
- Overthought things
- Empathetic and kind to other people
- Understanding and didn’t linger on the past
- Propensity towards growth
- Honest with ourselves
- Not all that ambitious with our dreams, we just wanna live pretty normal lives doing what we love with the people in our lives
- Puffy hair
- Both of us had both parents and an older sibling.
- Over all well adjusted without much baggage.
The list goes on, but I’m gonna cut things off here by saying not only do I love Davis/Daisuke, but he is LITERALLY ME.
It’s upsetting that the others never really get to know Davis.
He has a friendship with Kari for 3-ish years (post the Myotismon incident since he was there), and yet, they never really capitalize on that. Davis and Kari never hung out like TK and Kari did, and ignoring the shipping war, it would have done wonders for the two of them to have a scene together, just them. It could have even been a flashback scene of them watching Tai and Sora playing Soccer or something. They could have a conversation about Davis wants to join the Soccer team when following year or something since he’s not old enough in the flashback and Kari supporting him like the friend she is to him.
But… nothing doing. And I love the friendship DigiArmor episode as it gives us a glimpse of his hesitations. He’s seen the division of good guys and bad guys and hadn’t given thought to fighting a friend. It was a good first step in separating Davis from Tai, because Tai was always ready to throw hands with Matt back in the day. And despite his dislike of TK, he never really threw hands with him.
We need more videos like this!! Thanks man!
I have a loooot of problems with 02, but you absolutely nailed it that the legacy, passing-the-torch aspect is the best part of the series.
I really love Davis. I love Davis because of his level of selflessness. He doesn't have a million super dope action scenes compared to mostly every other character in the series, his best moments are when he's talking sense or reaching people, calling out BS against the other Digidestined even when they were against him regarding Ken as a person and some scenes even before then, his speeches with Ken needs no explanation, crying for other people over himself (Willis). He literally never cries for himself ever. He's a miracle kid who cares for everyone else even when they hate him and are against him and even then, doesn't hold that against them because that's just the person he is. He's pure.
It doesn't help the dub fumbled the bag in ways with some of the writers/writing issues. I think a good way to see Davis's character that's probably more clear than in the main series is to check out the drama CD "Digimon Adventure 02: The Door to Summer" I think it's on youtube still in a playlist. Also, Davis's japanese VA sings a particular song in that drama CD called "Reach For You" I highly recommend listening to that with subtitles as well for some good insight into who Davis is as a character.
Davis is unironically my favorite. But then again Jaden/Judai is also my favorite Yugioh protagonist too
I think people underappreciate Taiki from xros wars too. Hes genius protag done right imo. Hes borderline gary stu with how perfect he seems but makes it feel natural because he actually struggles to be that way and needs akari to keep him from running himself ragged. It makes it feel more believable when he solos an entire basketball team, defeat a kendo savant then send a digimon army packing on the same day with a partner digimon he barely just met. Hes a genius but even geniuses struggle sometimes and need support to pull off a lot of what they do.
He's honestly better in the manga where they actually do explore his character somewhat more. Especially giving reason to his behaviour much better than how vague the anime was.
@@Justsomedude7 you wouldnt happen to know a good place to read it do you? I cant find the full xros wars series anywhere. Its incomplete everywhere ive looked so far to the point ive given up on finishing it.

Marcus will always my fav digimon protagonist, but I can't deny that Davis had some of the funniest and most iconic scenes in all of digimon.
Which one?
@@bridge2853 which one of what?
Davis was my boy
Good god i love savers and masaru. I ever so slightly like his agumon more than taichis as well. Savers agumon is such a cheeky lil dude compared to taichis polite boi. I love him.
@@Coomamon_Memes punching digimon with your bare first is the epitome of epic cant even argue with that
You know what this also explains?
Veemon carrying the series. Veemon and its evolutions being constant fan favourites. If Davis/Daisuke was made to be us, Veemon was made to be our bestest friend in the universe, and boy did he serve that role a bit too well. Heck, some of us might even be Veemon!
Well put! Season 2 is my favourite, I watch episodes and clips on TH-cam of this season for enjoyment. You perfectly summed up why Davis is such a great leader and the good points of season 2
*Kicks down door*
Move out of the way peeps, finally my favorite boi Davis is getting defended!
This is so accurate and I completely agree! Davis and 02 itself even with its flaws is my favourite season hands down. Congrats on 50K and keep up the amazing work!
I love watching your videos, your style, your perspective, and narration keep me always interested in what you want to talk about. Digimon or Beyblade or any other theme, please keep posting the content you enjoy covering. I have a new sense of respect for Davis after watching this video.
I think Davis/Daisuke faced a tough road because he's not Taichi and why should he be. He's his own person and that's what makes him interesting.
I also think his character comes across much better in the subs than the Dub.
Well said. 😌👍 Daisuke was loud and trying so hard to fit in a group of people who were all smarter or more experienced than him, and got mocked for it enough by the characters themselves. I saw myself in him a lot.
I once saw a really good analysis of Davis, pointing out how, outside of the 02 cast, he never really seems to have any other friends (which, honestly could probably be leveled at almost any seasons cast though, except maybe frontier and data squad) and how he, in particular, seems a bit poorly socialized. I understand how critical that can spund of his character but by poorly socialized it was more talking about how he seemed to maybe a bit too hard and like this was really his first friend group ever. It also points out how him being into Kari petered out hard as the series went on, stopping altogether in the early 30s, around the same time him and the 02 team really got comfortable working together.
I wish i could link it but i don't remember ifci found it on reddit, a youtube video, or a blog post (i actually feel like it was a blog post but i don't remember the site even). As a chronically lonely autistic person... it actually really made me rethink Davis from my second least favorite of the original 5 goggle heads to... well, maybe third? Maybe still second least? Sorry, Tai is still probably my favorite and i really like Takato. Marcus is fun because of the memetic absurdity of him just decking mega level digimon in the face (and, well, data squad is generally pretty underrated). Still, Davis is a better character than i originally gave him credit for.
Never hated Davis but I remember I had to warm up to him when I watch 02 for the very first time. But pretty soon within the first arc of the season, I definitely started liking him.
Throughout the show I just liked him more and more. I love his personality and his drive is admirable. He is one of my favorite leaders in the franchise.
I think Takato is a pretty neat protagonist as well. And thanks so much for The Legend of Korra mention!
Omg a Davis/Daisuke appreciator!
Davis definitely isn't my favorite protagonist but in terms of character development and relatability he's definitely up there
I’m not involved in the digimon community but I didn’t think people hated Davis, I saw him as a kid that would realistically act in the digimon world.
Davis was always one of my favorite characters, in Digimon. I also love Adventure 02. I like the concept of them being able to travel in and out of the Digital World, That helped give Adventure 2 its own identity, from 01.
And to this very day, Davis is one of very few "goggle heads" who never caused his partner to undergo a dark evolution or was involved in a rampage. He basically treated Veemon as his best buddy from day 1.
Always liked him as a main character, he has a good arc and grows up to be a very responsible young man who owns his own business.
Ngl adventure 2 was my favourite and Davis is my favourite Digimon protagonist, related to him so much.
Dude you are so right. I'm watching the discotek Blu-ray of 02 and like Davis wayyy more than I remembered
This might just be one of my favorite video essays you've written. Deep, thought-provoking, and packed startlingly under five minutes.
Thanks a lot that’s very kind! I’m still not sure I nailed this one but the response is positive so far! It’s not a bulletproof argument, and Davis has his issues (especially in the English dub script) but I wanted to articulate what works about his character
Ngl, in the second half of 02, Davis became one of my favorite characters
I feel it was the way Davis was written early on. As the series goes by and even in the Digimon fills post Tri, he was written very well.
As much as I like long video essays there's something to be said about videos that are concise and able to get the point across in a shorter time frame. Beautifully said; beautifully written.
I'm sorry, people hated Davis. That's news to me. I find Davis okay. He never once made me think, "Why is he not Tai?" He and Ken are my favorite of the 02 cast and if I'm going to rewatch 02 it's because of them.
Im really enjoying your vids man. I love the refreshers on my old shows
One thing I really like about Davis that also Tai has is the hot headed stubborn personality he definitely does fit the jump into action goggle head leader persona well, both Tai and Davis I like equally as protagonists followed by Marcus from Data Squad/Savers whom was little more aggressive and had his charm in that!! I also think Ken bares a loner personality similar to Matt’s so the chemistry between Davis and Ken sort of mirror’s Tai and Matt’s minus the butting heads and rivalry. One of my favorite lines with Davis is when Wormmon leads him to the Golden Digimental he quickly trusts Wormmon and says “yeah I’m not a jerk everyone thinks” also when he helps Ken face his past many times like before they Jogress into Paildramon for the first time when fighting Okuwamon and when Ken opened The Dark Ocean to seal Daemon and the highlight his initial stand against MaloMyotismon not backing down when everyone else was engulfed in fear and despair a excellent protagonist that is slept on.
It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned how hated Davis was, which honestly perplexed me cause as a kid, I always thought Davis was one of the best characters in the series. I really loved his relationship with Veemon and his willingness to trust Ken when nobody else would. Now that I’m older, I still very much enjoy Davis as a protagonist and I even think to some degree, he’s a better leader than Tai.
Always loved 02 and Davis in particular
Also don't forget about Tagiru, from Xros Wars Hunters. He kinda reminds me of Davis!
Nah..I felt Takato was the better representation of the audience, the kids that were a fan of digimon. He was imaginative and very fond of the fictional adventures of the tv series, which was the exact reason Takato wore the goggles as a homage to digimon adventure series.
I honestly dont think there was a lot of thought put into Davis's character, when Digimon 02 was concepted, which explains why Davis was apparently drawn to resemble Tai and hardly stood out as a charismatic leader compared to Tai.
He had a few pivotal moments in the series, especially toward the finale, but I dont think those moments give him the praise of being a satisfying character. He was often characterized as a laid back and optimistic kid that was hardly fazed by shortcomings which may somewhat explained why his age group didn't take him serious as a leader until he stood up to malomyotismon.
I just like to think that Davis's trait of being an easy going character is what arguably made him unaffected by Malomyotismon's illusion.
Yeah I feel Takato honestly fits that billing better and is honestly much better than Daisuke/Davis. 02 was kind of a mess. So much so even when they finally got a chance to do more with the cast, they barely gave a crap and instead focused on a new character instead of the 02 team in the movie.
@@Justsomedude7 there is a reason the guy that made all the cool plot points of 02 that others dropped later on and better written episodes went on to make tamers as a lead.
@@snintendog Yep.....and then other weird stuff...
Dude had flames on his jacket before the 4th Hokage lol
I found Davis likeable... also for the fact that he was a mess but more balanced between the various protagonists
The only weaknesses I give to 02 is the lack of Digivolution Armor for Wormon and the natural ones (without function) for the new 4
Daiskue/Davis was my favorite next to Takato. Much like Yuma in Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal I enjoyed that he's just a dummy that learns and improves, becoming his own character proper by the end of it all. The fact he's the first to extend the olive branch to Ken after he drops the Kaiser persona is my favorite bit of development because you would have expected from anyone else besides him and while everyone was still justified in that lack of trust his stubbornness payed off and they all eventually accepted Ken in the end.
Thank youuu!!! I've been saying this and more about Davis for years. when his team picks on him most of the time it's completely unjustified, seriously pay attention to their arguments. How is anyone meant to cope with all that pressure surrounding them all the time, his own team mocks him and no duh hes going to do less than experienced older tamers. He's just a relatatable kid, also Davis and Veemon were sociably likeable, more than Tai and Matt. I found T.k at times boring and kind of insufferable too. Davis was a cool fun guy and I honestly agreed with his mentality lol. Most underrated digidestined and my favourite too.
What really doesn't help the views of Davis is that, to be blunt, the 02 Dub did the most damage to his character out of any other character (and it's not like the other characters managed to make it out unscathed, sans maaybe Ken. Maybe.). A lot of his most hated traits in the west (his abrassive personality, how he obsessively talks about Kari and how he treats her as "his girl") are literal inventions of the localization, where in the original they are much, *much* more subdued and less in your face.
If others found stuff to like in him in spite of a bad localization, I'm so glad they did, because there is a lot to love about him. But of all the issues the original Adventure dubs' scripts have, Davis & Daisuke being different characters is one of the top issues, and the biggest culture shock when people watch the OG version and/or a dub based on the original script, and I find it hard to believe how bad he had it in english.
Completely agree. I think there's a lot to like about the Adventure 1 dub, but I can not in any way same the same about the 02 dub. Daisuke's character was really butchured in that localization. I think it's a real shame how much hate he gets, because in the original I think he's a very endearing character, which I don't think I could ever say about Davis.
I don't know man even as a kid i always loved Daisuke the most.
They way how he acted during Kimeramon's rampage, giving Ken a second chance and ofcourse the ending made him my favorite Leader in all of digimon to this day.
Okay 1 problem i have with him tho he never questioned why he can't use Magnamon after Kimeramon's defeat.
If we get an explanation for that i don't know but after that episode i was keep waiting for Magnamon.
Considering it was the Crest of Kindness transformed and Ken got it back, he probably just didn't have the Digimental anymore
Grats on 50k man I love talking digimon so I subscribed but the simple to the point "essays" are so refreshing to see well deserved
The final episode was really my favourite scene of Daisuke.
I like this video something new and fresh. I would like you to do a series on several Digimon characters similar to this video. I would love to see a Tai, Matt or Izzy version. I remember Izzy in 02 was upset at the 02 cast because they relied on Tai & Matt because they're the strongest but he mentioned that he's just as capable as Tai & Matt so that there is an example of a character who can be further explored like you did here for Davis
Davis is my favorite digidestined! And I will fight everyone over him!
There also is a big difference between the Saban versions and the non-Saban versions. The non-Saban versions are much less obnoxiously written.
I loved Davis. He's like going from Kamille to Judau in ZZ Gundam. Like just lovable goofball. Always liked how the MCs have some uniqueness to them like Takato being shy compared to what Davis was and Masaru just being a hot-blooded fighter
We stan a Himbo King. Dont let the noodle arms fool you, he's supposed to be highly athletic after all
Woooo! 50K 🎉🎉Congratulations you deserve it and more!!
This is the perfect assessment.
It's sadly one of those things where if you watched 02 you either KNEW that folks said TK was the Main Character, or you yourself believed TK was the main character. Hard not to obviously TK came a long way and you liked seeing more of him and Kari...but Davis deserves credit for being the leader that befriended his enemy to the point where they were so close they were in sync enough to discover DNA Digivolution. THAT is a big deal...honestly makes me wish we saw Hawkmon DNA Digivolve with Wormmon given they wound up together lol
Honestly... Digimon 02 is one of my favorite seasons if not THE favorite, crew up with it. Also loved Hikari's outfit there.
Shame we never had more Dark Ocean stuff... Imagine Dagomon and Demon - or now Creepymon - fusing into frickin Cthulu.
The courage and friendship and miracles crests is a huge callback to many shonen anime and tokusatsu moments. The power of friendship trope basically. "Oh no my friends are in danger but the badguy is so strong but i have to fight anyway despite my fear or els-
**fat guitar rip as brave heart plays**
the "love courage and friendship" crests and the love triangle between yamato, sora and taichi seems to reference to magical girl anime too. Those seem to spout that phrase nonstop and usually have love triangles surrounding their female leads too.
Digimon always has these lil references to stuff i like scattered about. Looking for those while consuming media is a pastime in itself for me and digimon is a goldmine for it.
The way i got my nickname from him when i was a kid, also didnt know that he was hated, oh well you know what they say about being hated:
"If they dont like you, its because youre doing something they could never do"
The English dub really missed out a lot on the OST. They are really good
Davis and his crew are still great . The ending of their show is great as well regardless of what anyone has to say I enjoyed it.
Tbh, I feel Takato is a better fit for the relatable Digimon protagonist or audience surrogate. He was a fan of the show and merchandise like the kids who watched the first two series. He wanted to emulate them so bad that he created his own partner, only for reality to hit him and for him to realize it's not as fun as it initially seemed. In the end, he had to say good bye to what he loved, as he prepared for the next step in his life.
Daisuke, so much of what you describe, it's all mostly meta. The audience has a hard time accepting Daisuke because he's not Taichi, the audience are the ones who compare Adventure 02 to its predecessor. The audience can't accept the change. But most of that doesn't really play out in the actual series. In the series, Daisuke is just handed the keys to leadership and he doesn't really doubt himself in that position nor particularly fail at it any worse than Taichi.
The thing about Daisuke is, he's not me, he's the most Shonen anime protagonist besides perhaps Masaru/Marcus Daimon. He is happy go lucky, he's funny, he believes in the power of friendship strongest of all, and he possess no insecurities, or at least ones that are treated with any sense of weight, the only one being his jealousy over Takeru for Hikari, which doesn't go anywhere and is mostly comedic.
His ability to extend an open hand to past enemies is also similar to many anime protagonists such as Naruto, Luffy or Goku, never holding a grudge and making friends with anyone he meets, not letting them be defined by their mistakes or shortcomings.
He's pretty unique amongst Digimon protagonists, but it's not for some implied sense of relatability, but the fact he's more aspirational or feel good than the usual fair who tend to be more introspective and personal like Takato or even Taichi. In fact, it was Taichi who was impressed by Daisuke, that he offered him his goggles as a sign of respect for his bravery. Because unlike the ones I mentioned, Daisuke did acclimate to the idea of Digimons and the Digital World a lot faster than them, because the guy just doesn't discriminate.
Daisuke isn't me, he's the friend everyone needs.
I mostly agree with you, but I kinda disagree when you say 'he believes in power of friendship strongest of all' and possess no insecurities. Unless I remember incorrectly, the whole plot for him and Digimental of Friendship is on how insecure he is and how he didn't understand on how friendship works, causing Fladramon to de-digivolve back to Veemon.
But yes, I still don't understand on why people hate him though. If I'm being honest, he is my favourite leader amongst all digimons leader
And I'm already reading comments even before watching the video, because I know a lot of people hates Daisuke😂
Never hated Davis. Didnt know people hated him, only knew once the internet n TH-cam existed. Even then, i came into the youtube scene in 2012
as someone who was obsessed with specifically 02 as a kid (i’m talking 7-9) i didn’t really care for davis or any of the new character in 02. rewatching the show like ten years later i appreciate all the new characters, especially davis so much. it could easily be nostalgia but i genuinely think davis is a great character with amazing character development and its nice to see something that holds up so well
I always liked Davis as a kid, but I rewatched season 2 last year and did feel he was way more immature than I remember him being. However, you made excellent points as to how he couldn't be Tai and shouldn't be Tai. Davis become his own person and leader by the end and it was indeed refreshing to realize that and see how good of a Digidestined he actually came to be.
Most days, I think I prefer to rewatch Zero 02 over Adventure but my enjoyment of it stems from my enjoyment of the original. 02 is great when it's able to stand on its own and seeing the protagonist grow in that way makes a really enjoyable story.
I actually never knew people "hated" Davis. Sure, I didn't love the character like I loved some of the other protagonists. But I never found anything objectionable about him. And this video helped me see another layer to him that actually makes me see him as a much better character than expected.
Prodigious!!!
I know Davis came into his own, but it still annoys me that TK and Kari took a backseat to leading the new kids when they had the most experience. TK could’ve had the leading role at first, creating conflict with Davis who felt like he should be the leader instead. It could’ve been an inverse to the Tai-Matt relationship, but with TK willingly stepping back from leadership once Davis improved. Kari could have also taken on the role Sora had, becoming the overall caretaker of the group and trying to mediate Davis and TK.
To be honest that’s a flaw with 02 as a whole, the series often went out its way to sideline the original cast and instead focus on the new kids.
Unlike Ken who had to develop and change from an evil person to a good one.. but only because it was revealed that he was “controlled” by the evil seeds.. which threw me off when I discovered it, Davis was able to grow on his own during the show his character development was beautiful, especially in the episode where he was trying to earn the friendship digimental.. (while yes it felt a bit too rushed, but it was realistic as a plot)..
As a TK fan, I need to point out that he was the obvious choice for the series leader, I had to hate Davis a little bit 😂 but I still agree that he was a good choice.
Davis should stepped on tks head and asked Kari out
As a dude named Dave, I have to give respect to this other Dave who is as much of a digimon nerd as I wished I was.
I am a rare rare breed of the type that has a open mind, Flexibility (Not getting bogged down by minor stuff) and lack of strong opinions. I see it for what it is and accept it that way. I know that goes against 99% of those who have a stronger disposition with my kind. But I had loved every season and all the characters from all across Digimon. From Both English and Japanese as well. My love for Digimon is unwavering as is my loyalty.
If you want to know here is a definition just in case, Enjoy!
Unwavering Love: The love is unconditional, meaning it is not dependent on any conditions, expectations, or reciprocation. It is a selfless and unconditional acceptance of X.
Unwavering Loyalty: The loyalty is steadfast, meaning it is unwavering and unshakeable. It is a commitment to stand by X through thick and thin, good times and bad, and to support and defend X without hesitation.
It's funny when people berated Davis but he's like the one with the most realistic 11 years old mental maturity in the show
Digimon had always the same formula of power fantasy where elementary school children are more mature and independent than they really were
I watched OG Digimon when I was between the age of 5-6 and remember the show somewhat trough some memories ( I remember being scared shitless for days from Skull Greymon), when 02 was airing I was something like 7-8 years old and I bounded more with the crew ( especially ken and wormmon).
He’s literally my favorite
Davis can be himself but Tai will always be the true leader. He’s more of a side story. Hence the descriptions for Revenge of Diaboromon, Tri and Last Evolution. Its says Tai assumes the role of “leader”
I've always liked 02 and though Davis can be annoying he has his good points same as yolie. Yolie always annoyed me because of how she idolize mimi and mimi was annoying, but then it's like seeing the 02 kids grow, just like the 01 kids you grow to love them, Davis, Ken, yolie, and Cody become your friends too. When I herd that 02 the beginning was coming out I was like "yes back with my 02 pals again!" Adventure 1 and 2 will always have a special place in my heart.
Nah, never thought I was any of them, I just wanted a digimon, didn't even need to go on adventures, It was more about the connection they had, it made me think a digimon would have been a great friend.
generally adventure 02's dub did Daisuke/Davis dirty where in the OG he went from assuming he'd be the amazing leader he is in his head to the true heart of the team making those around him want to believe in them selfs the way he believes in them and himself, the dub made him over the top obnoxious at the start to a wise cracking hot head at the end.
Daisuke/Davis is the prototype of Minoru from Survive, change my mind
Davis was a cool character in Adventure 02
"You want courage? I'll show you courage!" chills.
Marcus wins the most hated trophy. I always would have preferred TK stepping up as the main character for 02 though.
I never understood why Davis was so hated he was a great character
Main reason I love o2 so much is because Davis and Veemon
I didn’t really care that much for this season but I’ll admit I really enjoyed every minute we got to spend with these characters cause I keep seeing people say this the calm before the storm so I been really enjoying these final moments with these characters(cause I don’t read the Manga) and I can’t wait for infinity castle
People dislike Davis? I loved Davis! I also loved Tai too.
I can't believe he's disliked. Daisuke is all the way the best because he is not perfect. And he got coolest digimon partner ♡
