I would argue that the character did believe in himself, just not in the trite cliche way that people usually mean it. He took a hard look at himself, honestly evaluated what he had to work with, and then used it. So often "believe in yourself" is used to justify acting like someone else, which is the very opposite of believing in yourself. To truly believe in yourself you have actually know who you are and what you have to offer, even if it isn't much.

This is the take I got from it as well, also made me re-evaluate how I define confidence and if I had a skewed sense of definition. Maybe, but if it helps looking at confidence and to have confidence in a more sane and healthy way, I guess I'm gonna keep it.
He may not be confident enough to blindly think he would get out unharmed or debrainified but he used what he had in the moments, with the right confidence that he could do his best and hope that it'd work but have in mind that failure is a real possibility. Just do it, you can't learn everything in theory

i think you have it slightly confused. believing in yourself is more akin to trusting that you will succeed, while what you describe is something closer to trusting that you can succeed. its a lot easier to trust that you can succeed because the indomitable human spirit was never a myth

Everyone is talking about the "believe in yourself" bit bit I think the monkeys and the way they're dealt with is the best part. You have the ignorant monkey, who only does what it does without thinking about what that actually entails, who is dissuaded when the human tells him eating brains isn't enjoyable. Then, you have the well-intentioned monkey, who doesn't see his actions as wrong and is even willing to spare the human, given he will participate in the brain eating with them; dissuaded by the human explaining why eating brains is actually evil. Then you have the fully aware "evil" monkey who can not be reasoned with and is only dissuaded when met with real resistance (the hockey stick). Three different components that explain WHY people do things that are wrong.

Self confidence won’t matter if you aren’t doing anything good with it, and there’s no reason to have confidence in yourself if you’re not doing anything constructive. Just because god is within you doesn’t mean you’ll actually use him right.
And addressing heaven, if that’s where an all loving god wanted us all to be then isn’t that where we would be right now? The fact that we aren’t would mean that there is either a loving purpose to both heaven and earth as it is, and that there’s a good reason that we’re here experiencing love and suffering, or that god has limitations of what he can do to help us. I also loved how the main character used logos (I am nasty, therefore I am nasty to eat), pathos (I will show you why it is wrong to eat others’ brains because it is the core of their being), and ethos (I’ve already dealt with the two other monkeys the nice way when I could have done it in a much meaner way), respectively. Also why my first official video is a little vlog filmed in my shed during a windstorm when I'd decided that I had to just start with *something* and I wound up talking about how we should try to do things before knowing whether or not we'll succeed. Fired/not fired/missed are all different states.
You could even argue that the “shots” you don’t fire could be saved for later, be frugal with your effort or something.
Also, I have to disagree with your assessment on self belief, it’s to believe you can do something, usually with no regard to any thoughtful analysis.

@@Idkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk50 I think the metaphor is more in context in a economy/game theory standpoint. In a game where you can choose to shoot the deer, say if you try to shoot it, you have a 30% chance of missing killing the deer and it running away. If you choose to not shoot the deer, you have a 100% of not hitting the deer, hence missing killing the deer. The game does not consider if you want to save the bullet for later, as everything exists in this one small situation. Missing is not defined as missing an attempt, it’s more like missing the opportunity to succeed.
I still agree with you that this phrase would not work in a more complex environment where attempts can be given up for better choices, but in the situation of trying something or gain nothing, it works better.

There’re a few layers to this
See/speak/hear/do no evil, 1st refused to look at what it wanted to do evil to, 2nd was revolted at the idea it’s committed evil, 3rd was shocked to hear how evil it is compared to its opposition, and the human refused to ever entertain evil, sticking strictly to pacifism
Way of handling conflict, first dissuade someone from doing as they’re about to do, then appeal to their morality, if all else fails, threaten so they prioritize their safety over your harm
False gurus, be wary of the advice of people who claim to be wise, even as they may be old, they may have never faced the problem they dictate you on, their ‘advice’ can prove as dangerous, if not moreso, than whatever plagues you
Conducting yourself through life, never be armed with unwarranted confidence, such is akin to charging headlong into danger with a shield of paper, instead, have fear, be wary, it will beckon you to step back every once in a while and think things through, allowing you to recognize the threat to be avoided and exploit whatever can be in a bid to triumph

Yeah, no. Here's the thing: vague, evasive advices or claims can _always_ be flipped around some way and turn into a sort of self-fulfilling prophesy. "Oh, you actually believed in yourself by not listening to my advice on believing in yourself, that's totally what I meant! I knew you had it in ya!" That's the type of gaslighting shit abusers use on their victims.
The "true meaning" is malleable because it's vague. It's so broad that you can pretty much fit it into any situation.

This is really good. Even with me realizing it was the 3 monkey tale from Asian folklore when it got to the second one.
And I really vibe with saying believing in yourself won't solve anything. Because at least in my book, the much more important attribute is courage. Courage is knowing that the odds are stacked against you but still doing it anyways. Courage is being terrified to fight someone but still doing it.
And after watching this I've realized how cowardly I've been in pursuing my art career. I get paralyzed when I think about the amount of work it's gonna take to start making something of the quality that I would release to the public. But you know what, I don't fucking care if I gotta bash my head against the wall for the rest of my life to learn this shit, I'm gonna fucking do it damnit. I don't want to live in the dimension where I let my dreams die with me.

The definition of courage you gave is exactly the same as believing in yourself. The blue man in the video, in a way, actually did follow the old man's advice by not following it. He completely disregarded what the old man said and took care of the monkeys his own way. He believed in what he could do by himself.
Honestly, I think the end of the video was unintentionally going against the moral the maker meant for. I think it was meant to be a moral about not blindly believing in yourself, but in the end, the guy beat the monkeys by doing just that. He believed in himself so hard, whether or not he was aware of it, he talked three monkeys out of eating his brain. And after doing this, he said he hadn't believed while doing it. Bullshit. If he hadn't believed on some level that he could talk a monkey out of eating his brain, he would have given up and died. He believed that it was dangerous, and he unconsciously believed he could do it anyway. That he didn't need anyone else's advice, that he could defeat the monkeys his own way. So he did.

    • @nursezatufek5716
      @nursezatufek5716 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@MrShifty1 not necessarily. He didn't believe in himself, because who the hell can when facing off three monkeys, right? He just didn't need to, he didn't think he would succeed but he tried anyway and did it. You can still try going at something while not believing you will be succesful with it, and despite that, still do it. Belief in oneself is not necessary to try and do something. It may help, but it's not an obligation. He was in an alarming an dangerous situation and didn't want to die so despite believing that he would fail he still tried to get out of the situation and did it. It's like standing on top of a burning skyscraper, on the edge and there's a helicopter passing nearby but its still too far away for you to jump. You don't believe you can jump, but it's either death or death and you have a chance if you try. Even if you don't believe in yourself, you will take that chance. Taking this chance is not believing in oneself, it's just trying despite everything. And even if you don't believe you can do it, you are going to try because you don't need baseless confidence to actually try and do something.

Interesting take, the way I’ve always take that “believe in yourself” advice has always been more like, believe that it’s possible? Believe that you could do it maybe.
I’m in school for computer science and the amount of times a problem has been thrown in front of me and my first thought has been an overwhelming “I don’t even know where to *begin* doing this” has been many, but the amount of times I’ve managed to complete those problems even after thinking that has also been many so I’ve kinda gotten into the habit of just shutting out that initial doubt and trying it.
The way I see, the mountain may indeed be unclimbable but I can’t tell from the bottom whether it is or not, so best just to start climbing and give it what you can; if you failed well at least you know how to climb that much of that mountain now, maybe it’ll be useful somewhere else.
