If I were to guess I'd say the game doesn't know if it's a twirl or a z jump so it just eats the input

I agree, if you push Z on the wrong frame, it thinks you are trying to do a buffer jump

@@firelow it only works on spikes too, on munchers it doesn't happen.
Something to do with ground blocks (spikes are considered ground, munchers are enemies)
So probably a buffer jump or something else

at 8:00 why did you think you still needed the cat suit? None of the rest of the level required it...

Because the level was impossible without a cat suit at that point? I needed to climb over that wall, regular Mario couldn't get past there.
