  • A video about a deep dive into testing machine screws threading directly into 3D printed holes. Testing different hole sizes, part orientation to understand how much re-use you can get out of standard screws in 3D printed parts. Embedded nuts or melt in nut inserts will have better performance, but for many design applications they are not needed.

    Very useful info!

    You could try using wood screws and making a square hole it taps into - making it square makes it somewhat more forgiving to inaccurate dimensions

      Good suggestion! Square holes may also give some room for the material to deform/flow as well!

    Smart way to keep it usable after it's stripped out at the end of the video!

      Well sometimes you can't just throw a print away! 🤣

    Did you try the experimental Cura settings "exclusivel"?

      Interesting I have not! Seems like it shouldn’t help with holes directly perpendicular to the built plate but would have an affect on holes at an angle.

    Interesting! Could you repeat this with screws that have suitable thread for plastics?

      Good recommendation, the performance should be better at least for screwing with the layers. There are a lot of different screws for plastic parts so I would have to try and pick a commonly available one.

      @@DesktopInventions it would be awesome! I just bought a bunch of threaded inserts for now, but I'm sure something like they use on pressure washers or car panels would work. Not sure if the higher threads would split layers though.

    Would you expect different results with PLA, PETG or ABS?

    Did I miss the part where you measured the OD of the screws

    • @DesktopInventions
      @DesktopInventions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't show that, but they are standard M3x0.5 screws so the OD is about 2.88-2.90mm
