  • Join me as I continue my adventures in the Outer Hebrides. In this episode, I explore the Harris coastline and spend the evening in the company of seals and mackerel. Then I cook up by the sea before heading inland to summit camp on a rocky hill with panoramic views of the Inner and Outer Hebridean islands.

Having the rocks in place before putting a tent up in such windy conditions might be worth considering next time

Hi Martin, I was really pleased that the weather settled just long enough for a summit camp. The Harris hills are so full of character and for relatively low hills, they present a fair challenge. Once you get your last few Munros done, you'll be free to tackle some of the wee hidden gems.

Thanks Mo. I agree. The Harris vid proved the easiest to film simply because the weather calmed down a bit. I wish there was a cost effective solution to filming in wind and rain. The GoPro provides good enough footage but the sound quality is poor. And, even with double mufflers on the mics, the Canons still pick up way too much turbulence. In the final vid of this series, I had to can most of the audio recorded during the hiking on Skye because of background wind noise.

What do you think of the thermacell? Worth the money?

I've only tried the thermacell in my van, next to the door and it seems to work reasonably well. I use it when I'm cooking or brewing up, leaving the door open a little for ventilation and to reduce condensation. If the door is open a little, the smoke from the thermacell seems to be drawn out the door and, appears to deter the midges. If the door is wide open, the midges tend to get blown in. I also spray some 50% Deet around the edge of the door. So, overall, when van camping, I'm seldom bothered by midges. Overall, I think its worth the money although it is priced at the top end of what I'd be prepared to pay for such a device. When the midges are bad, anything is worth a try! There are a few other guys using it, mostly for black flies and mosquitoes and they seem to be happy with its performance against those bugs.
