    I've owned a 2018 Ridgeline for 4 months, I'll give my thoughts. Bear in mind I selected this truck, so I have some bias, but I'll be as honest as possible. First, I don't "need" a truck. I work a white collar job in a small midwestern city. So, this truck is not used to tow trailers or haul heavy loads on a daily basis. The truck is used as a daily driver to my job, in a town with rotten winter weather. My primary want, not need, is to use the bed semi-regularly instead of a renting a trailer to move my motorcycles around, on occasion move bulky furniture around. I go camping and want something with a bed I can either put a small tent in or use as sort of a "base" vehicle. I also drive 1000 mile round trips with some regularity to see my family, so comfort and drive are important.
    If you're like me, and can count on one finger the number of times in your life you needed to tow >5000 lbs, don't own anything that weighs >5000 lbs you need to tow, and have no (realistic) intention of driving your new truck over boulders on a mountain, I'd think about the Ridgeline. If you own a large (like 30') boat you need to tow, or horses, or a large RV/travel trailer; just stop now and go look at fullsize trucks. None of the light pickup trucks from any manufacturer are for you. However, for smaller boats (bass boats, fishing boats), and travel trailers you're still fine with a light duty truck.
    Pros - 1) Driving/ride. Its stunningly good. I drove a Colorado an hour before I drove the Ridgeline, and the Honda is a big, big improvement on not just the Chevy, but the Tacoma and the Frontier as well. Quiet, like crazy quiet, smooth, with decent steering feel, and good acceleration. 2) Comfort/finish: high marks. soft-souch surfaces all over. Heated seats, heated steering wheel - boy was I glad to have that when it was -9 deg F here 3 wks ago. Seats have amazing lumbar support. 3) Practicality : Cavernous storage INSIDE. When you fold the rear seats up - you have an interior payload bed thats 30" wide, about 50" long, and about 48" high. Its enough room to load up 8 massive suitcases (2 wide, 2 high, x2 ). The in-bed trunk "holds a body" as demonstrated on other videos - but more practically it easily holds 15 plastic grocery bags before getting tight. Then, finally, you have the bed which is the same size as the other short beds in the market - except the thing is made out of a no-scratch composite and you don't have to pay for a bedliner. 4) Safety features. I WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED THIS IS AS BIG A DEAL AS IT IS TO ME NOW. Sorry for the caps but its true. In the RTL-E, the safety features include adaptive cruise control. Listen, if you drive long distances (more than a hour) regularly or like in my case make six 1000 mile trips a year, you want this. It reduces the stress of highway driving on crowded interstates full of big-rigs. I set it, and forget it, and enjoy the ride. The lane-keep assist is great too. 5) GAS MILEAGE. No BS, doing 62-65 MPH, depending on wind/weather I'm getting close to 27 MPG Highway - thats pushing a 500 mile range. I regularly get 22-23 MPG in my city-highway (but mostly highway) 10 mile commute. If I'm in a hurry, driving more aggressively, I get 20 MPG.
    Cons 1) Price. My RTL-E was expensive, and Honda's not dealing. After getting thrown out of a few dealerships, I found I could not get much less than $2000 off MSRP. It sucks. The only thing that I'll say is that I did trade in a vehicle that was a decent Japanese SUV with 80K miles on it and got a way better price than Carmax; but then I did a VIN search and found that the dealership sold my traded-in SUV for 70% more than I got. The lesson? If you have the time/stamina to deal with people and sell a trade in vehicle yourself - do it. Also, when you load up the competition they bust 40K pretty fast too. They aren't selling these things to lose money. 2) Styling. I wish my Ridgeline looked more like a Tacoma, and I wish Honda had Ridgeline colors that weren't so damn dark. I cant tell the green from the black form the charcoal colored ones without squinting, the red/blue colors are muted, and the white...well its white - its nice but tends to look like a fleet truck unless you accessorize. 3) Infotainment system. Look, it works and its a massive leap forward for me, but the criticisms of it as being a clunky interface are accurate. But the stereo sounds great.
    Competition: I went into shopping for a light duty pick-up thinking I was gonna get the Colorado; and drove the Frontier and Tacoma (the "CFT" competition") as well. I liked all of the trucks. I could nit-pick, but the truth is they all offered good combinations of "truckyness", comfort, and value. I think that when you get to the nitty-gritty of it, all of the base models of these trucks are about equal, they all tow 3500 lbs with 2 wheel drive. The Frontier you can get for under 20K - thats impressive. But once you start to add the 4wd power train and options, you see a trend. The "CFT" trucks option packages all tend to dedicated off-roading. Which is great if you do that as a hobby or for fun, it looks awesome. The Honda options trend towards comfort and on-road driving features. This is where I had to split from the "CFT" competition, essentially every dollar you spend above the base trim on them is for this off-roading stuff I'll never do. And by off-roading, I mean sort of extreme stuff like dedicated off-roading trails or rock crawling, stuff that can tear your transmission out and cost you 5K to fix. I just dont do that. I'd rather have the adaptive cruise control, and the kitchy but fun in-bed speakers, and a heated steering wheel when its -9F.

      Stem Nozzel this was seriously an amazing run down on the Ridgeline. With the needs and wants you describe I can relate to you completely and agree that this is a great choice for you and most people with similar adventures, honestly. It’s really cool to see that you’re getting good MPG but I know it all depends on who and how people drive :). Thanks so much for sharing everything and all the information you provided...most informative comment ever. Glad you shared and thanks for watching!

      No problem. I dont see a lot of owner reviews on TH-cam, I love my Ridgeline - but trucks are highly individual purchases. The best thing I can say about it is I would buy it again for the same money or even a little more.

      Damn it man! I guess when it comes to getting either the colorado or the ridgeline.. it's how they drive. Then and only then! is when i can decide.. right now im aiming for towards the colorado. Because i really love how that body exterior looks. The way you wrote this review just makes me want to balance that favor meter and just wait until i test drive. I'm o nthe same boat as you man.. i live in miami. No off roading here. Even if there was not really my thing.

    I've bought 4 cars from HondaCarsOfRockwall ('12 CR-V (used), '14 Civic SI (new), 16 Fit (new), 2005 Civic LX (used). I'm happy to see they allow TH-camrs to review their vehicles. Although all of my past buying experiences there always took endless hours and hours, I will consider buying from them again. This time, I'll do my shopping then work deals by phone. I hate being held hostage in a dealership with the 'sign this and I'll see what my manager can do..." B.S. I'll have to wait and see what happens in the Summer if/when I return to Texas. Thanks for the review.

      Wow that’s cool and I’m glad to hear from you. I know what you mean with the hours and hours, I’ve been through that before elsewhere too and it’s sucks.
      Like you said, try to get as much done before getting in the dealership and it hopefully would go much quicker. Maybe I could work em over for ya :).
      If you got your eye on any vehicle there this summer you could let me know and I could do a personal little tour of a vehicle for ya. Just let me know...I’m not a salesman there and don’t work there.

    Bought one today. Your video was very helpful in finding all the great functions. I chose the Ridgeline because I did not 'need' a truck but something to haul lite cargos. The interior is fantastic. Since it is essentially a Pilot I can take it on long drives comfortably. Thank you for this video.

    I've always been a big fan of Ridgeline and Hondas in general. I really like this one. Just have to convince the husband, after having a loaded F-150. Pretty tall order. Now with our age, climbing into tall trucks is even harder. So I may win him over.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s definitely hard to convince someone away from a loaded F150 but like you said..they’re tall and the Ridgeline has a nice step in height plus it’s very comfortable and has a surprising amount of pep for the 6 cylinder engine.
      It’s definitely practical! Good luck winning him over 😀

    Owned my '17 RTL-E for a year an a half and 10,000 miles.. It is a great little truck...with an in bed speaker system, that I use all the time.. very nice.
    Caution: The bed is very shallow, and the bed is only 4x5 feet... Need to get in the habit of running with the tailgate down, and straps, tarps and bungee cords to contain your load. My F150 bed was more than twice the volume.
    I've hauled a half pallet of sod, 1 yard of soil, plenty of logs... Kept the payload in the bed under 1500 lbs.. I'm sure it is physically possible to load it more, wouldn't recommend it. Haven't towed anything yet.
    The truck doesn't drive like any pickup truck I've ever tried.. Because it is a unibody design, torque vectoring AWD, it handles great in all kinds of weather.. Very secure. And it has a lot of great little options, like a 400w inverter that can run my hedge trimmer, in bed trunk.
    Active safety systems are fantastic, especially the radar controlled adaptive cruise control.. Use it all the time and it greatly reduces unsafe driving situations by maintaining a safe driving distance.
    The only real negatives are, imo:
    The Garmin GPS is a POS.. It is slow, and the updated database is at least 2 years behind Applemaps and Googlemaps.... Lack of knobs. Not a great design..
    The rear doors do not open very much.. Makes it difficult for some, and loading it is a pain sometimes.
    If you can live with the small tuck bed and the 5000 lb towing limit, I would highly recommend this Ridgeline.

    Enjoyed your review, but 40 grand, I hope Honda is listening to make those corrections; maybe suicide doors for the back possibly might create more entrance room. I really found the Ridgeline intriguing, and I haven't viewed your Tacoma segment yet, but I am a Toyota man; once had a '94 Corolla that quit on me at 500 thousand miles. Now, that's quality! I can't recall if you mentioned the length of the bed;however, most of them are under 6' anyways; another feature that I really don't care for.

    After a lot of fact finding and test driving all other mid size trucks I settled in for a 2018 Ridgeline RTL-E. 8 months later with 15K miles and having hauled a decent amount of cargo with 800Lb Pallets to Skid mounted 600Lb Pumps 6ft tall, I have cruised at 70 mph effortlessly on Florida highways. Spot on on Gas mileage at 23.5 to 24 Mpg with most cargo on highways. Less stress and fatigue when driving long distance. Just choose a lead vehicle maintaining good speed and lock on choosing adoptive cruise control and lane watch and let that person ahead do the driving for you at a safe distance. Need to watch out for those drivers who cut in front of you getting in the midst of your adoptive cruise control signal that makes your Ridgeline to automatically put the vehicle on braking mode to create the safe distance setting. It is best to disengage cruise control during such situations to avoid the feeling of being on reverse thrust after an airliner landing. I agree 100% on comments made by Stem Nozzel. I am happy that I made a good choice. No regrets.

    Outstanding review, thank you. Personally I don't care if it does not look like a "manly truck", but really wish it had a higher ground clearance. Still, for 98% of the driving I'd do, the Ridgeline would be ideal. It's that last 2% that will need about 9" that I'm not sure about.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind words! Yes the ground clearance could definitely be increased a bit which would be nice. What or where would you be going with it if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks for watching!

    • @ev3rlastingfaith
      @ev3rlastingfaith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. Most of the driving (~98%) would be the typical urban hauling family around, field trips with camping gear, etc. Occasionally I'd load the bed of the truck with things that would not easily fit into an SUV (home hardware stuff, mountain bikes, etc.). For this type of driving and use, the Ridgeline is ideal as you mentioned. For the other "2%", higher ground clearance would really help in some poorly maintained mountainous roads where, for example, a Honda Pilot would almost have enough clearance over the rough terrain, but not quite. Also, although I would not intentionally venture into deep snow, this same poorly maintained mountain road does occasionally get a great deal of snow and I guess A 4x4 would diff lock would give me a better chance of making it through the deep stuff (?). Nonetheless, AWD could be all right especially with the right tires for the conditions. Again, these are my guesses, I never had a truck but looking to get one. Keep up the thorough, honest and practical reviews.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like it could be a great option for you overall but yeah I’m curious as to how it would do with the deeper snow or more treacherous mountain roads. A locking 4x4 would definitely be helpful but like you said good tires might be enough. Hard to say!! Again I truly appreciate the compliment. Thanks so much for watching...I just filmed a Pilot today and will edit/publish that soon and it’s so similar to this

    Too bad a lot of people simply can't get over their "it's not a real truck" hang-up. They are really missing out. Really like my RTL-E. It's fully featured and a great driving truck on long trips. Sure the Tacoma is better off-road but that's about it. When I owned a Toyota I rarely had the opportunity to do a lot of off-roading. I need a truck that does everything I need, not 5% of what I might do.

    I really like the RIdgeline. I like just about everything about this pickup. Inside, again, everything is very nice. I like the steering wheel, however, the dashboard and the controls look absolutely terrible. I don't understand how Honda could make such a nice pickup truck, and then give it such a bad dashboard. I would have liked to see just a basic, standard tachometer/speedometer (no digital speedometer), more oversize knobs, etc. on the dash. All Honda had to do was design a more traditional dashboard/controls (with a slightly more upscale look) and they really would have made a great pickup truck.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean! After the Civic and Pilot changes in 2016 models with the "button-less" dash I'm surprised they incorporated it in the Ridgeline too. The digital speedometer seems to be mainstream or them nowadays too, with no option for traditional. When new stuff comes out, there are always some changes that are not so good! Anyways, thanks for commenting and watching!!

    • @howlingwolf125y
      @howlingwolf125y 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment and nice review of the Ridgeline. Yes, they put the same bad dashboard/controls in the latest Honda Pilot. That is a shame, because I really like the Pilot too. The interesting thing is that Honda has gone back to a more traditional dashboard/controls (with large knobs) in the New Honda Accord. Another thing I do not like is the push button shifter Honda offers in more upscale Ridgeline and Pilot models. Again I like the more traditional console shifter.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point with the Accord, wonder what Honda’s plan is. I agree with you on the shifter. I was recently in a Pilot with the push button and it just didn’t feel right. I Like the feeling of actually being able to move a lever lol.

    In terms of how you fit into the driver’s seat, if you don’t mind me asking, how tall are you? I’m on the tall side and leg room and the center console cutting into my right leg is always a big make or break decision for me. Thanks

      Thank you! I think this was a “demo” vehicle and the manager at Honda has been driving it and he’s probably 6’3” ish. He seems to be comfortable and probably wouldn’t drive it if he wasn’t. Sorry can’t say much else about that!

    Loved these and other Ridgeline standouts: hidden trunk, two-way tailgate, ride-like-a-car; but I could not keep it. For me, the seats were much too firm. My rear-end would fall asleep after about an hour or so behind the wheel. I could not stretch out my left leg - I'm about 5' 11"". And, the steering wheel was too slick. These were deal breakers for me, so I traded mine in. What's happened to seating comfort? My 1993 Explorer seats are cloth and manual, yet are very comfortable - more so than any new suv or truck I've sat in. If my criticisms don't apply to you, I think you will enjoy this vehicle.

      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that would be nice..hard to find enough leg room in the midsize truck segment. How tall are you? I'm short so I got it easy in that area lol. I haven't reviewed the Colorado/Canyon, Frontier..but I was in the Tacoma and the Ridgeline is better than that. But still

    I recently took my 2012 Ridgeline in for Honda service, looking over the 2018 model and priced at $20 grand more than the value of my vehicle, I can honestly say its not worth it. New car prices are absurd and this is no different.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it’s getting pretty ridiculous. I feel the same way, my wife has a 2004 Highlander and we wouldn’t wanna pay the new Highlander price lol. Thanks for watching!

      I've got a new Ridgeline, and writing that check was painful. Trucks are just so popular, its crazy - and they aren't making a lot of Ridgelines, I think about 30,000/yr. So if you want one, you're going to pay for it, and it sucks. Compared to my 2011 $30K crossover, its a better vehicle in nearly all aspects; so there is value in the higher price. Still, I can't disagree with you at all; I think buying a car is the biggest money sinkhole ever. The best car I ever bought was a 2003 Chevy Cavalier.
      I paid $8,500 for it new (military discount, recent graduate discount, loyalty discount, and a GM credit card discount). I had it for 8 years until an old lady who wasn't looking pulled out in front of me on a busy street and hit me (she was faulted). Thank god she and I weren't hurt, but the car was totaled. Get this, my insurance check was for $3500. The insurance examiner said it was the nicest cavalier he'd seen with 85K or so miles on it. Inflation aside, that means the car cost me a total of $5000 to own for 8 years. I bought the 2011 SUV used from a dealer to replace the Cavalier in a hurry, but I never really loved it. I love my Ridgeline though, and I will keep it until it falls apart Blues-Brothers style. I want to get 200,000 miles on it before I part ways with it for what will likely be an self-driving car when I'm 60. th-cam.com/video/L8hX2Ex58os/w-d-xo.html

    what can you do with that short bed ? it is useless.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ROB NAVAEI I know it’s short, especially compared to full size. But it’s wider and can fit a decent stack of Sheetrock. It’s the only bed size available but it’s longer than the crew cab “short box” versions of the Colorado/Canyon, Tacoma, and frontier by 2-3 inches. But it’s the size your stuck with for a Ridgeline

      My old truck had an 8' box and I was certain that the 6.5' foot box on my existing truck would be a pain in the ass but it's been more than sufficient. Even though the Ridgeline bed is shorter, I bet it's more versatile and useful then the 6.5' foot box on my truck. My power tools can be locked in the bed truck along with anything else that can't get wet and I can still load stuff in the back.

  • @TheKingkingg

    Good review, but the Ridgeline was always similar to pilot and same platform as Oddessey too...all journalists need to stop repeating same thing. And it is a truck, Henry Ford who invented trucks would agree, and I'm disappointed as a owner that Honda listen to non owners to put a fake line (more rust spots).

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing. The good news is they beefed up some components on the Ridgeline compared to pilot/odyssey to make it more capable/rugged.
      Thanks for watching!

      Lol, a lot of rhose trucks that you are referring to, the owners dont even use them as they are suppose to be used...you know...towing, hauling, and offroading. They even put lifts and expensive set of shinny rims and mud tires just for looks that they're looking for. Useless, gas guzzling, pavement princesses LOL...and you know it.
