  • The Britpop era lasted from roughly 1993 to 1998, give or a take a year or 2!
    Such a fun time in UK music history that produced so much great music. Here's a run down of my top 20 albums from that period.

    There's some great stuff around from the Britpop era and like your choices Andrew. My personal favourites would be as follows;
    1. Urban Hymns - The Verve
    2. Olympian - Gene
    3. Different Class - Pulp
    4. Definitely Maybe - Oasis
    5. Carnival Of Light - Ride
    6. Parklife - Blur
    7. Dog Man Star - Suede
    8. Laid - James
    9. Elastica - Elastica
    10. Rough Music - The Blue Aeroplanes
    There's also a ton of other bands worthy of a mention such as Cast, Hurricane #1, Embrace, Tindersticks and Mansun. Cheers.

    Great list! I think I’d find it hard to put one together myself, but a few of the albums I still listen to regularly are Expecting to fly, Homegrown, I Should Coco, In it for the money, K, Different Class. Wild Wood , Olympian by Gene, and Fuzzy Logic + Radiator by the Super Furry Animals.

  • @allanstelmach
    @allanstelmach 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks Andrew! As the other guitarist / keyboardist in NME I think it's only right to throw my own two pennies in here..... Definitely Maybe is a far better album than What's the Story!! Oasis peaked with their first album and though a lot of the stuff after that was still great, it never topped the debut. Can see why you left out Radiohead, but The Bends and OK Computer were obviously from that period and they're still a guitar band! They'd probably take up the top 2 all by themselves though, so maybe not fair. Different Class is probably my Number 1 too, though close call vs Definitely Maybe. Far too much Blur in that list for me, but Modern Life is Rubbish earned its place for sure. Biggest ommited band for me are The Verve!! Northern Soul is such an epic album, has to be top 5 for me.

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only just realised I put 4 Blur albums in!! Must have felt it warranted, but The Great Escape could, at a push, get pushed out. The Bends and OK Computer would definitely be 1 and 2 if I was including them! Northern Soul definitely better than Urban Hymns.

    My top 10 based on what would qualify as Britpop would be something like this:
    1 What’s The Story Morning Glory - Oasis
    2 Everything Must Go - Manics
    3 Definitely Maybe - Oasis
    4 Dog Man Star - Suede
    5 Be Here Now - Oasis
    6 Suede - Suede
    7 Different Class - Pulp
    8 Coming Up - Suede
    9 Good Feeling - Travis
    10 Expecting To Fly - The Bluetones
    Tellin’ Stories and Urban Hymns need to be in there, as would both Suoergrass records you mentioned and Blur’s Leisure and Parklife. But hey, only room for 10 today!

    I’m pretty new to Britpop but I like it so here goes
    20: never heard of it but I love elo I will check it
    19: never heard of them either
    18: I think I’ve heard of them but never listened
    17: probably my 3rd or 4th favorite oasjs album
    16: I have heard 1 or two songs by pulp but I really want to check them out more
    15: never heard of it
    14: one of the bands I discovered through oasis! It’s a good album. No country house!! Ok charmless man isn’t my favorite but god the universal is the best song omg
    13: I have heard of the band but never listened yet
    12: name sounds vaguely familiar
    11: never heard of it
    10: never heard of it I’m so sorry lol I’m also here for recommendations!!!
    9: again I haven’t heard it but that cover is terrifying
    8: I really need to listen to Radiohead also yes more blur! I love ❤️❤️blur CREATED Britpop I love them I watched the documentary no distance left to run
    7: omg I love this album so much!!!!!!! I played it in the car and my dad likes it I think (he doesn’t talk much about his opinions) but I think he liked it lol
    6: heard of it but haven’t listened it
    5: eeeeeh does this count as Britpop!! It’s so good though, holy shit!!!! I thought 1997 was when they stopped being Britpop...but eh. But yay graham got Damon into American music and hip hop then he made Gorillaz so I’m happy :)
    4: okay I really really need to check them out. I know what you mean by feeling shifts in music I feel it now in chart pop (it’s normal) I think people are getting sick of trap thank God
    3: yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yea! Omg it is so good. Also oasis are so much more of a rockier band than blur and their aesthetic is more grungy like blue jeans and stuff so I count them as Britpop? I’m far from an expert but my dad and I both say is oasis even Britpop? Don’t kill me. also I entered the picture like 5 months ago lol also
    2: we have the same favorite oasis album!! Yay!!! I love the album so very much that was my first Britpop album and stuff.
    1: I have it saved on my Spotify. I should go listen to it I loved common people I just haven’t had time I have to listen to it. I have to do it
    Also do you count the verve as Britpop? I like them.
    Forgive me for being new and asking questions and stuff I’m 16, American, and I love blur and oasis, I will check out a lot of these bands! Great video!

    I'd put different class up there as no.1 also.
    I'd have blurs britpop albums closely following. They just had such a great unique, english, 90s, BRITPOP sound.
    Oasis really were a phenomenon. Something we will never see again with the way media just different nowadays.
    I personally wouldn't classify the 'blur' album as britpop. Blur changed their sound after falling out of favour. Oasis flopped their 3rd album. And pulps follow up to different class wasn't up to par. britpop wrapped itself up pretty quick, then weaker watered rock bands such as 'travis' took over. The scene was pretty short lived, and it's probably the last time we've had legit good music in the charts in england, its cool look back. It seems kind of crazy that it ever happened at all.
