  • Why does liberty flourish in some states but falls to authoritarianism or anarchy in others? Institute Director James A. Robinson discusses The Narrow Corridor, a book he co-authored with Daron Acemoglu. They argue that there is a corridor to liberty which is narrow and stays open only via a fundamental and incessant struggle between state and society - a struggle put on dramatic display with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This presentation was recorded at The Pearson Global Forum in Berlin, Germany on October 19, 2019.

When state is strong, state control people.
In reality, it’s some people use state as machine to control people.
So it’s some people control other people. Technically, one man can control the fate of the whole world.
