The torture of this series is rereading old chapters and thinking "Wow, I can't wait to hear Skyen's thoughts on this one" to then realize you probably won't talk about it for at least 5 years.

@@bdletoast09 That's funny since that was when I fell off the first time. Mostly due to burnout. I only started reading again once Wano had started.

59:35: Man. The quiet, sincere, heartfelt "You had the same dream as me. That's One Piece." speech, followed a split-second later by Skyen dunking on (ugh) _Pearl_ one last time, gave me emotional whiplash.
(Not intended as a criticism. But still. My poor emotional neck.)

33:00 Kuro getting knocked the fuck out.
The intensity of the hatching also goes a long way to sell just how hard his head just got rang. Yes, Kuro has been knocked out of his silhouette, but you can also see his head flinging back even more and it doesn't even have an outline like the rest of his body. That's a really good way of showing where Luffy decked him and where the focus of all that kinetic energy was transferred.

Kuro's fake sob story early in Syrup Village is to me a scene that really... could have very easily been more effective, if Oda had just *not* put the reveal that he's actually a pirate in the *same chapter.* Because like, to me it seems like a generally clever bit of writing: First have him antagonize Usopp and make the audience instantly dislike him, then give us his "tragic backstory" maybe making us feel for him after all and think he might not be such a bad person despite how badly he treated Usopp... only to then drop the pretense and say, no, he isn't "that bad"... He is *infinitely worse* than we thought. But I feel like in order for that final twist to land, we kinda needed more than like *ten pages* to sit with the idea that he might be redeemable before revealing that he's a complete monster.
I don't mind the ideas Oda was going for with that twist, I just think it's one of those cases where he went through the plot points too fast. Why? idk, probably to get to the overlong fight faster. It's a bit of a recurring issue I have really: The setup phases go by too fast, and then the climaxes are way, way, *way* too long. Syrup Village is obviously pretty minor in that regard compared to Wano, but... it still was an issue.

I came to skyen for the LoL content and subscribed for the LoL stuff and then slowly found out he covers soulsborne, nintendo stuff, final fantasy and certainly not least.... one piece.... like at this point he covers around 80% of all the media I love. It's his one piece stuff that gets me the most emotional though and it sucks to know that it ain't performing well enough. I have recommended this to my close friends who watch one piece and all of them seemed to enjoy it, specially because skyen just "gets it", he understands one piece. Here is hoping that we get to see of this and as soon as I get a stable job I'll become a supporter of the ch. Thanks for the content skyen.

I have no idea how you manage to cram so much detail and analysis into your shorts, but it's amazing to see and hear. The passion you have for the story and the art, it's mind blowing and it serves as a reminder that if we look hard enough, then we can find so much beauty and effort in everything. I can't wait to see you continue your journey, and I know it might not happen, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the eventual final chapter some day.

For many years, I was convinced that I wouldn't read/watch One Piece because of its length. I spouted nonsense about "onE PIEcE fAnS WhEN thEy tELl yOu it gEtS GooD 300 chApTErS iN I pRomiSE". While I still doubt I will watch all of it (1100 episodes is a LOT), having read it and being manga current, I am so glad I did. One Piece has got some masterful art, story, and arcs. Keep doing what you do Skyen, you talking about art in media helps me appreciate it a lot as well because I don't have the same art prowess as you do. It's a shame it doesn't get enough recognition from people, but continue analysing what you do, especially One Piece

This series is realy good at showing what is missing in OPLA. Not everything, but like the most important thematic stuff. I am still mad that Netflix version does not have Sanji blowing a fishman, but that is just me. And it is realy cool that this video ends on the largest opportunity for adaptation to improve the source material. After Loguetown we will know for sure if OPLA can have its own merit.

  • @FafliXx
    @FafliXx 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Almost 1 1/2 years of One Piece, damn.
Weird to think about ow much the story itself evolved in just that short of a time. Not even a full arc happened, but we are in the final stages of OP after all.
Although it also makes you realize how much One Piece has changed, how much Oda has changed about his writing style, how even his artstyle changed (and how much he probably worked himself to death to make early OP), and how much he probably deviated from his early plans. Especially the end of the East Blue Saga reveals just how different his plans probably were back then.
It's also somewhat personal for me. One Piece has been with me all my life. Literally, as it began serialization in my birth year.
The first time I actually interacted with it was watching it on TV as 7 year old. I distinctly remember role-playing as One Piece characters on the playground, and being forced to play Buggy because the Straw Hats were all already taken (I wanted to play as Zoro), and he was the only other character I actually knew (I had seen exactly 2 episodes at that point).
Ironically, today Buggy is my favorite non-Straw Hat character, and I like him more than Zoro.
But it goes further than even that. Before I loved One Piece, my favorite TV show as a kid was: Vicky the Viking. A show that Oda talked about being the main inspiration behind One Piece, other than Dragon Ball.
The main character, Vicky, is a small viking boy who gets scared easily and isn't strong and intimidating like the other vikings (although he can be brave when it counts). Especially not like his father, who is the strongest around and chief of the viking village. For that he gets made fun of, and he doesn't believe in himself, but still wants to go with his father to sea, to have adventures.
But he does have an advantage: He is very smart, while the other vikings are not (to a comical degree).
He ends up saving the day with his wits all the time.
This might also explain why I love Usopp, who is obviously inspired more than any other characters by that show.
Basically, what I was trying to say: One Piece is pretty cool, and this series is one of the best analyses of not just the story on paper, but of the artistry and heart that makes the manga what it is.
