won ton soup Yes It was a very hard decision to make. But Im very happy in retrospect. I was quite unhappy and had a driving urge to take on something entirely new. I had worked for almsot 10 years at that point and saved up enough money to do it. In germany we have to work until 67 anyways. So Im looking at 31 more years of work in my new career.
won ton soup It actually was just this year. Im almost 36 now. I had alot of fun along the way. Meeting many new people in uni. Also I found myself appretiating the feeling of learning and student life more than when I was younger. Compared to my former job, med-school (even despite the tons of content you have to learn) was easy for me. I was used working 80++ hours per week. If you have something similar in mind, just go for it. Learning new things is the best thing you can do in life in gereral.
our human brain is a learning machine. if you have the will n no physical or mental restriction even then that shouldnt stop you. you can also learn anything you want to. knowledge is limitless and is worth more than money a million times over. aging and time shouldn't stop you from learning anything you want to know.

The problem for me I suppose is that I'm also engaged and renting, so I'm not sure if my life would be able to handle a Med-student life.
Mr.Science I saved quite a bit of money while I was working in IT. I was a dev in system elektronics and software for trains, working for the german railroad company (Deutsche Bahn). While in university I was living in a small apartment with 4 other people. I also had a parttime job in a medicallab, doing system maintanance but with very bad payment. It worked out somewhat. I still have some debths to pay but working as a doctor now will easily get me out maybe this week.

The biggest problem with a 50 year old is not that he lacks the energy or that he won't take instructions from younger people. The problem with a 50 year old is that he has reached an age where he understands how ridiculous the constructs of 'jobs' and 'careers' and 'titles' and 'money' are in the light of how short human life is, so he may not be as passionate about his job as someone who is too young and dumb to understand how futile it all is. We are all a blink of an eye away from being dead. Doesn't matter if you are 29 or 59. Your life will soon be over. Just pursue the career you want regardless of your age and don't worry about it. Doing something you want to do versus doing something you feel that you have to do can make an ocean of difference in your results.

gigi duru Starting from scratch, there are two entry level jobs that require minimal skills; help desk, and FST (field service technician). Some help desks require no certifications. Others require Network+ and maybe Security+. It can vary, but the FST positions I've seen typically require A+, Network+, and Security+. So someone with zero skills might be able to land a job at a help desk and work toward obtaining the certifications to become an FST. From FST you can advance to Network Admin or one of its variations like Security Admin. If you know for sure that you want to become a Network Admin you can skip working as an FST but might still find it invaluable to obtain the FST certifications before attempting to earn the certifications to become a Network Admin (e.g. CCNA, etc.). The other route you can take is software; Analyst, Database Admin, or Programmer. This is a longer and more difficult route often requiring formal college classes which you can take at night while working at the help desk. However, for really creative types this can be more enjoyable as it can open the door to doing things like making your own smart phone apps to sell. So, in summary.... Helpdesk (possibly be hired now), FST (maybe 3-6 months to get certifications), Network Admin (another 18 months to obtain certifications - varies by person), or analyst, database admin, programmer (can be 2 to 4 years of college unless you are a self taught wiz kid).
I started an education in software development at the age of 27 without knowing anything about computers. 3 years later I'm able to make really sick applications and even my teacher says I became good at programming. Just go for it.
I started in IT at 29 a couple years ago, and worked my way up from the bottom with a liberal arts degree. Now things are going extremely well, but it took some time. My advice would be to work your job 9-5 (hopefully in the tech industry doing something, ie: sales/marketing w/e), then do at least an hour or two a day working on your technical development (reading, coding etc.) and NEVER GIVE UP! You got this! :)
+Eloy Hurtado Bermudez I stated earlier in this thread that I landed my first official IT job at age 38. Every boss I've ever had was 5 - 10 years younger than I. However there are advantages to being older. Our business acumen is much sharper through our wisdom. I'm often asked to be a director in IT and I turn them down. I like the hands on approach to IT. Too old to acquire new pressures, haha.
I will be 29 this year, and I still haven't lived the life I want, like everything is pending, that's frustrating but I keep telling myself be patient and make the present moment count.

.. Age doesn't matter, i start in I.T at 35 yrs 'old with only basic skills on my Pentium dual core PC which i started to learn. I was in a food & beverage industry for the past 7 yrs before joining in I.T industry while taking my Microsoft Certification. It's not only the passion, it's "how deep is your passion?".... as the saying goes.. "Excellence is not a destination, its a continuous journey that never ends"... :)
I started my IT career at 42. I went through the IT Ready program and received my A+ certification. I'm now 45 and a full time employee with a major health insurance company with their IMAC/Desktop support team.
I'm 30 and applied for Software Engineer. Hope it is not too late. I wanted to be settle by now but can't atm. Ive already searched for different things. It is not an easy area but long term goals will be rewarded. I hope.

I got my first official job in IT at age 38. *That's a 3 and an 8*. Now I'm in the 6 figures. Your prior education may help if you're an older person. I did go to college for engineering at age 18, electronics school at age 24 and learned lotus 123 spreadsheet management at 31 even though that's not programming. In other words, any kind of prior technical expertise in any field of study will help you if you want to go into IT later in life.

I didn't get started in IT until I was 27 (last year). I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I am now the IT Director at my company. I never graduated college for computers and I had no real experience prior to this job (some web design, but that's about it). I proved I was a hard worker and had a good track record of it. I will admit I was very lucky to get noticed the way I did, but the fact that I'm here after one year still amazes me. Work hard and stop making excuses (especially about your age).
I just turned 30 and have changed from a career in law enforcement to studying for my A+ Cert. When I made this decision, it wasnt a feeling of being "too old" but more so the issue of being "unsure" of my career path. Beginning this transition has reignited the passion inside me that I lost over the course of the last few years.

It was hard to get to this point; I spent over two years self studying around having a family and working full time. You can do it if you dedicate the time and employers like motivated staff.

You're 29!!!! Quit fooling around and get to work learning computers! You got a great start with Eli's videos! I was 38 when I learned to turn a computer on! 29 is a great age, somewhat mature and ready to settle down. Twenty year olds kids are great in tech, but not highly skilled, there good with the easy stuff. And would you want a 21 years old doctor operating on you! Nope! Same goes for IT. Three, four, five mini careers are common these days. I've heard a 65 years olds starting new careers and getting rich. The guy that started McDonalds was 55. The guy that started Kentucky Fried Chicken was in his 70's I think. I think Grandma Moses was 80 when she started painting. Ronald Reagan was 70 when he became President. Age is never an issue. Old joke: When you're 40, trade in your wife for two 20 year old's!

Luke Grekat Same here, just got my Server+ at 57 and working for a company that says, "prove to us in a techout what you know and we'll try to move you into that field". But I've been working for them since 2007 in Iraq and Afghanistan and moving from the electronics side of the house to Server Admin is a bit more daunting than I originally thought. Finding these videos helps to bring all of it together.
Eli, you're the man! To be honest, I'm 25, been trying to learn programming since I was 20 and I always give up thinking, damn it, I'm too old, others started at 13, never going to make it. I'm actually glad you're answering those questions. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you've done!

I'm 29 and halfway through my undergraduate studies. I'm finding myself easily discouraged when I come across age-related ceilings and conventional developmental milestones such as when it becomes unacceptable to begin your education or start a family. But with further insight you'll find that these are mostly based on black-and-white thinking, and while they can be useful as someone's personal goal, they don't serve much of a public good. In fact, it's sad to think that there may have been potential that has been wasted with the acceptance of someone else's arbitrary standards.
I already felt embarrassed and too old hitting college at 22, then I dropped to help my parents run a store that sadly came down six years later. Those six years flew by and now I am 29 and I just feel worse just thinking about it. I feel I'd go back and crash and burn trying to even take notes. lol
I was working on a project, moving Computer servers from one building to a new building.. i met a lady and she went into coding at like 30.. she came from accounting so she was actually a pretty good programmer because she knew what the accountants wanted ..
No it is not if you are real passionate about coding ad IT. I started on of the first ISP's in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995 at the age of 33. After a couple of years teaching myself(high school dropout) How to code, I developed 100's of web applications, moved into consulting, then landed a developer position at a Fortune 200 company. I retired at 51, by then I was in senior management for afore mentioned company. If you can spend 10 plus hours a day, 6 days a week and would rather code than do much else you can master the skills quick enough to make a decent or great living at it.
I'm 29 and thanks for the encouragement. Some of the fear comes from comparing myself with other more successful people my age, which helps nothing. But I just can't help saying why did I waste so much of my 20s and why am I just now realizing how much I can accomplish when I set my mind to it.
Very well put, that being said, I'm retired military, and 57, so starting a new career, and the nice thing about us older guys is that we know that there are lots of younger guys that know way more than we do about any new field we are going into. I'm actually looking at Cyber Security, and am pretty excited about how open it is, and I actually think that my life experiences will be an asset. Granted, I built my first computer in high school (1978), and it was a Times Sinclair 2k shoe box job. I've played with both hard and software off and on my entire adult life. But this is a new deal, and what I've learned so far is not only fascinating, but hella fun. Yup, lots of guys like you to learn from, and I to chuckle at guys that aren't even 30 that seem to think they are all old and what not.
I'm 40 and just finished my BS in Computer Science. Before returning to college I was an electrician with a technical degree; this means I had a bunch of general education classes I had to take when I returned to college. I'm also a wife and mother, it's my job to take care of the household and make sure the kids get to there extracurricular activities (one is an active members of scouts and the other is active in FFA). I also have a Security+ certification and am working on a Windows 10 cert. The only thing that changed at home was we ate frozen/instant dinners a bit more frequently. In addition to learning how to code, understanding algorithm theory, security fundamentals, networking fundamentals, and basic software engineering, I also had a handful of math and physics courses (lower division requirements). Going into the program, the only thing I knew about computers was how to turn it on, connect to the internet, and had some knowledge about operating systems and processor speeds. Not only did I finish my degree, I made deans list a few times and graduated with a 3.4 GPA. Back when I was "young", I didn't know what I wanted to be "when I grew up". When you have no direction or goals, going to college seemed pointless to me. Why spend the money on school when I don't know what I want to be? So I got a technical degree because I knew the money was somewhat decent; better than retail sales at least. When I finally figured out what I wanted to do, and had the means to do it, college felt easier. Let me add that it can be difficult getting into the business even with a degree. I wish someone would have told me while I was still in school that I would need certifications in addition to a degree. I would have started on them a long time ago. Businesses also want to see "proof of concept", meaning they want to see some application of the material you've learned; even in internship positions. I highly recommend doing side projects on your own as they are a fantastic way to get "experience". The point to all this rambling is this: it's all a matter of how bad you want it. It's never too late.
Im 32. I just graduated with my AAS in Cybersecurity. Just got a gig as an Network Administrator. Took a while to find the right fit. But it IS doable. more power to you all out there switching career fields!
There's opportunities in the military for IT. My neighbor was with the Army for a number of years and did a ton of networking stuff. You may not have to retire to start on the path :)

I worked as a reception in Marriott 11years before after I graduated from college (My major is tourism management) and then I went to a private hospital to played as marketing manager after that I am hired by an internet technology CO. like a sales. NOW I TEACH MY SELF SWIFT&JAVA. Cause I found no matter in what generation people must good at a skill.
I'm 44 and worked in the tech industry from 1991 to 2006 duing coding (machine and cnc language + some c++ and html) along with other tech work . I changed carreers into the medical field. I am a tech person and always will be. Now I have had the itch to go back into tech. I was thinking about coding again but maybe web development.
I accidentally got into IT at 40 (0 previous experience or interest) and accidentally ended up specializing in enterprise WLAN about 7 years ago. Now after 15 years I have a very cushy job as a systems engineer with a major manufacturer with all kinds of toys to play with, which is why I'm watching Eli's videos. I wasn't starving to get here either. Flexibility and curiosity got me here. I have no college degree or certs and run circles around those that have. It's what you make of yourself. Eli did mention that your worth as an older employee might be in management which is what happened to me but I was still able to get "up to my elbows" at the same time.
I'm 35 years old... My manager is around 7 years younger than me. Learning a lot from them. Envy them but at the same time they are helping me grow my career.
I just turned 26 almost two weeks ago, I'm studying for my Applied Associate's degree in Network Administration. I do not feel old at all entering into the IT field.
I start in IT at 35 having wife 2 children and trying to have 3rd when I was unemployed. I was looking 3 month fir my first job in helpdesk. Now I work in second job (still helpdesk but have more freedom to to everything until I will cant help then. I ask for help Admin) for better money. I can say for every one. NEVER STOP TRYING, no excuse am I too old, short, fat. If you really want job will find you but you must try!!! Do everything to find. In time when I was changing my job I send my CV even in shop with pc parts just to be close to IT. No job is forever. Only you decide what you want. Eli you are great. You help me a lot. I’m 29 and slowly working on getting into IT, learning a few programming languages and working towards my CompTIA A+ certification. But as a purchasing manager, my biggest problem is finding what my skill set can bring to the table in the industry.
In my 20's I was young and foolish. Did a lot of bad stuff. Now I am 36 and just started diploma in web development. I would kill for a junior position with a mediocre pay. The fear of not being able to get a job is depressing but hey, it's a new chapter of life. Thanks for the great video, Eli :)

HOWEVER I wouldnt trade my life experience and training for the world. Im currently preparing to go back to college with hopes of getting at LEAST an entry level position. I got into desktop support at age 30. Many people I started with had years of experience in IT. Believe me the first 6 months you're in that type of role, you get thrown in many different fields that these other long term do not know as half as much knowledge as one who starts in entry level.

Dude Im 23 and I want to go to college next year. I thought I was way too old but no, youre not. Youre never too old. I didnt take studying seriously when I was younger, because all i wanted to do was have fun. Fun with friends and fun with people. Now that Im more mature, I am a lot more hungrier for success and feel like going to college at my age would benefit me more now than going to college at 18 straight after high school.
I just think it's a missconception that most people have of programing, it's very intimidating because most of the highlighted stuff that someone not in the community see's are the wiz-kids who started programing when they were 2 and it becomes the imagined standard for us. I had to check several sources before I felt that it was an acceptable thing to get in to and I'm 22 for gods sake. I'm a toddler and I worried about it.
I went back to college at age 30 and finished IT degree at age of 35. I got hired at 36 and now I am 38. I am doing server, system management as well as helpdesk, networking. lol.. You are not too late. 29 is still very capable age even if you have no IT degree. Although, I admit it will be very hard to get good IT starting job at that age if you are going back to school. Just don't go for helpdesk. Look for company with little to no IT and asking you to do everything. You will get tons of good experience in half the time and get promoted at 2x speed. Really.. if you go for simple helpdesk job, you will most likely be doing it for next few years with no promotion and minimal salary. Avoid helpdesk.. try to skip all low level IT jobs and look for a chance. :p
Didn't get into school until I was 27, graduated a couple years ago, been a developer since. Now going back again for a second degree, just because I want to do a little career switching someday; never even thought of my age as a limit. Even at my tech there was a student in one of my classes pushing 70. Pretty sure the guy is also a developer now. So the truth of the matter is, there really is no age limit.
Well, I'm 24, started to learn programming 2 years ago, now I'm finishing masters in computer science, and preparing my first project for github. And I was pretty anxious about my age, but this video cheered me up a bit.

I find it funny when people complain he is rude in his videos, yes he is rude, but what do you expect he's in IT, he's probably a developer. He is smarter than the average bear. And what comes with this is a sort of god complex, and the majority of developers I have met are like this, if you can't deal with it you better high tail out of this profession because almost everyone is like this.
In the future people will have 2-3 careers during their lifetime. There has been a lot written about that, it is expected that people will have second education in mid 40s and do something else. I think the main problem with learning programming is not the age but generations. People who are under 20 right now basically grew up with smartphones and technology, everyone under 35 knows how to use computers and learn programming (or something else) online, they are comfortable with that. People over 50 may know computers but there are lots of assumptions that they are kind of slow or their knowledge is outdated. In reality, it depends on a person. There are those who always act age appropriate, have a wild life when they are younger and then settle down, become boring. Everyone learns exponentially until they are grown up and then they become stable and static, instead of learning new things. Those who do can always acquire new skills. Also, not all people look or act their age when they are older. These people can achieve a lot because they don't play by rules
I am 32 years old. Last year I enrolled in the computer science degree program at the local university. Since I was a child I have always practiced with computer science: I have written many kinds of "Hello World" without ever going to the next level. Now I would like to take it seriously and make this passion become a job. I hope it's not too late!

I feel old at 28 because when I started fixing computers replacements cost more than repairs, now a lot of times replacing is significantly cheaper than fixing. I started with MAC OS 5 and Windows 95 ... and uses every Linux kernel after 1.3 I watched floppies and optical media become legacy tech... that's how I feel old
It just takes some demystifying. I felt worried when I was 27- much like this guy lol. However, when I got started in IT- I got my A+, TestOut PC pro, Google IT support, Dell ISM v3 and v4, Dell Network associate, Dell Poweredge server, Dell converged and HCI, Dell Vxrail specialist, Net+, SEC+, Project +, CYSA+, Pentest+, CCNA, SSCP, ECES, earned a certificate of proficiency in routing and switching from my local community college, and got a Bachelors in Cyber all in 5-6 years- I feel like a fool looking back now, having thought "Am I too old?" Now, am I going to be the next IT entrepreneur that comes out with some code that changes everything? No. That's the problem though. People often think of IT as some esoteric knowledge only obtained by prodigies. IT is a HUGE field with room for anybody that wants in.
I know someone who was 31 and in one year went crazy with studying and was better at Java then most people coming out of school and he had a wife and child and a totally different job to start. So it's possible, I know I'm about to start.
I just turned 30 years old, disabled and finally able to get a chance to go to school after 10 years of denial, without no assistance and etc after able to get approved for a loan. I want to go to college for communications and computer engineer

I'm currently working in Pathology, but Medicine has always intrigued me. The problem for me I suppose is that I'm also engaged and renting, so I'm not sure if my life would be able to handle a Med-student life.
Mr.Science I saved quite a bit of money while I was working in IT. I was a dev in system elektronics and software for trains, working for the german railroad company (Deutsche Bahn). While in university I was living in a small apartment with 4 other people. I also had a parttime job in a medicallab, doing system maintanance but with very bad payment. It worked out somewhat. I still have some debths to pay but working as a doctor now will easily get me out maybe this week.

The biggest problem with a 50 year old is not that he lacks the energy or that he won't take instructions from younger people. The problem with a 50 year old is that he has reached an age where he understands how ridiculous the constructs of 'jobs' and 'careers' and 'titles' and 'money' are in the light of how short human life is, so he may not be as passionate about his job as someone who is too young and dumb to understand how futile it all is. We are all a blink of an eye away from being dead. Doesn't matter if you are 29 or 59. Your life will soon be over. Just pursue the career you want regardless of your age and don't worry about it. Doing something you want to do versus doing something you feel that you have to do can make an ocean of difference in your results.

Starting from scratch, there are two entry level jobs that require minimal skills; help desk, and FST (field service technician). Some help desks require no certifications. Others require Network+ and maybe Security+. It can vary, but the FST positions I've seen typically require A+, Network+, and Security+. So someone with zero skills might be able to land a job at a help desk and work toward obtaining the certifications to become an FST. From FST you can advance to Network Admin or one of its variations like Security Admin. If you know for sure that you want to become a Network Admin you can skip working as an FST but might still find it invaluable to obtain the FST certifications before attempting to earn the certifications to become a Network Admin (e.g. CCNA, etc.). The other route you can take is software; Analyst, Database Admin, or Programmer. This is a longer and more difficult route often requiring formal college classes which you can take at night while working at the help desk. However, for really creative types this can be more enjoyable as it can open the door to doing things like making your own smart phone apps to sell. So, in summary.... Helpdesk (possibly be hired now), FST (maybe 3-6 months to get certifications), Network Admin (another 18 months to obtain certifications - varies by person), or analyst, database admin, programmer (can be 2 to 4 years of college unless you are a self taught wiz kid).

I started an education in software development at the age of 27 without knowing anything about computers. 3 years later I'm able to make really sick applications and even my teacher says I became good at programming. Just go for it.

I started in IT at 29 a couple years ago, and worked my way up from the bottom with a liberal arts degree. Now things are going extremely well, but it took some time. My advice would be to work your job 9-5 (hopefully in the tech industry doing something, ie: sales/marketing w/e), then do at least an hour or two a day working on your technical development (reading, coding etc.) and NEVER GIVE UP! You got this! :)

+Eloy Hurtado Bermudez I stated earlier in this thread that I landed my first official IT job at age 38. Every boss I've ever had was 5 - 10 years younger than I. However there are advantages to being older. Our business acumen is much sharper through our wisdom. I'm often asked to be a director in IT and I turn them down. I like the hands on approach to IT. Too old to acquire new pressures, haha.
I will be 29 this year, and I still haven't lived the life I want, like everything is pending, that's frustrating but I keep telling myself be patient and make the present moment count.

I was in a food & beverage industry for the past 7 yrs before joining in I.T industry while taking my Microsoft Certification. It's not only the passion, it's "how deep is your passion?".... as the saying goes.. "Excellence is not a destination, its a continuous journey that never ends"... :)

I got my first official job in IT at age 38. *That's a 3 and an 8*. Now I'm in the 6 figures. Your prior education may help if you're an older person. I did go to college for engineering at age 18, electronics school at age 24 and learned lotus 123 spreadsheet management at 31 even though that's not programming. In other words, any kind of prior technical expertise in any field of study will help you if you want to go into IT later in life.

I didn't get started in IT until I was 27 (last year). I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I am now the IT Director at my company. I never graduated college for computers and I had no real experience prior to this job (some web design, but that's about it). I proved I was a hard worker and had a good track record of it. I will admit I was very lucky to get noticed the way I did, but the fact that I'm here after one year still amazes me. Work hard and stop making excuses (especially about your age).
I just turned 30 and have changed from a career in law enforcement to studying for my A+ Cert. When I made this decision, it wasnt a feeling of being "too old" but more so the issue of being "unsure" of my career path. Beginning this transition has reignited the passion inside me that I lost over the course of the last few years.
I decided to change career into IT aged 35 and I am now 38 working in IT Support with a range of career options. It was hard to get to this point; I spent over two years self studying around having a family and working full time. You can do it if you dedicate the time and employers like motivated staff.

I was 38 when I learned to turn a computer on! 29 is a great age, somewhat mature and ready to settle down. Twenty year olds kids are great in tech, but not highly skilled, there good with the easy stuff. And would you want a 21 years old doctor operating on you! Nope! Same goes for IT. Three, four, five mini careers are common these days. I've heard a 65 years olds starting new careers and getting rich. The guy that started McDonalds was 55. The guy that started Kentucky Fried Chicken was in his 70's I think. I think Grandma Moses was 80 when she started painting. Ronald Reagan was 70 when he became President. Age is never an issue. Old joke: When you're 40, trade in your wife for two 20 year old's!

Luke Grekat Same here, just got my Server+ at 57 and working for a company that says, "prove to us in a techout what you know and we'll try to move you into that field". But I've been working for them since 2007 in Iraq and Afghanistan and moving from the electronics side of the house to Server Admin is a bit more daunting than I originally thought. Finding these videos helps to bring all of it together.

I'm 29 and halfway through my undergraduate studies. I'm finding myself easily discouraged when I come across age-related ceilings and conventional developmental milestones such as when it becomes unacceptable to begin your education or start a family. But with further insight you'll find that these are mostly based on black-and-white thinking, and while they can be useful as someone's personal goal, they don't serve much of a public good. In fact, it's sad to think that there may have been potential that has been wasted with the acceptance of someone else's arbitrary standards.

I was working on a project, moving Computer servers from one building to a new building.. i met a lady and she went into coding at like 30.. she came from accounting so she was actually a pretty good programmer because she knew what the accountants wanted ..
No it is not if you are real passionate about coding ad IT. I started on of the first ISP's in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995 at the age of 33. After a couple of years teaching myself(high school dropout) How to code, I developed 100's of web applications, moved into consulting, then landed a developer position at a Fortune 200 company. I retired at 51, by then I was in senior management for afore mentioned company. If you can spend 10 plus hours a day, 6 days a week and would rather code than do much else you can master the skills quick enough to make a decent or great living at it.

I'm 29 and thanks for the encouragement. Some of the fear comes from comparing myself with other more successful people my age, which helps nothing. But I just can't help saying why did I waste so much of my 20s and why am I just now realizing how much I can accomplish when I set my mind to it.

Very well put, that being said, I'm retired military, and 57, so starting a new career, and the nice thing about us older guys is that we know that there are lots of younger guys that know way more than we do about any new field we are going into. I'm actually looking at Cyber Security, and am pretty excited about how open it is, and I actually think that my life experiences will be an asset. Granted, I built my first computer in high school (1978), and it was a Times Sinclair 2k shoe box job. I've played with both hard and software off and on my entire adult life. But this is a new deal, and what I've learned so far is not only fascinating, but hella fun. Yup, lots of guys like you to learn from, and I to chuckle at guys that aren't even 30 that seem to think they are all old and what not.

I'm 40 and just finished my BS in Computer Science. Before returning to college I was an electrician with a technical degree; this means I had a bunch of general education classes I had to take when I returned to college. I'm also a wife and mother, it's my job to take care of the household and make sure the kids get to there extracurricular activities (one is an active members of scouts and the other is active in FFA). I also have a Security+ certification and am working on a Windows 10 cert. The only thing that changed at home was we ate frozen/instant dinners a bit more frequently. In addition to learning how to code, understanding algorithm theory, security fundamentals, networking fundamentals, and basic software engineering, I also had a handful of math and physics courses (lower division requirements). Going into the program, the only thing I knew about computers was how to turn it on, connect to the internet, and had some knowledge about operating systems and processor speeds. Not only did I finish my degree, I made deans list a few times and graduated with a 3.4 GPA.
Back when I was "young", I didn't know what I wanted to be "when I grew up". When you have no direction or goals, going to college seemed pointless to me. Why spend the money on school when I don't know what I want to be? So I got a technical degree because I knew the money was somewhat decent; better than retail sales at least. When I finally figured out what I wanted to do, and had the means to do it, college felt easier.
Let me add that it can be difficult getting into the business even with a degree. I wish someone would have told me while I was still in school that I would need certifications in addition to a degree. I would have started on them a long time ago. Businesses also want to see "proof of concept", meaning they want to see some application of the material you've learned; even in internship positions. I highly recommend doing side projects on your own as they are a fantastic way to get "experience".
The point to all this rambling is this: it's all a matter of how bad you want it. It's never too late.
Im 32. I just graduated with my AAS in Cybersecurity. Just got a gig as an Network Administrator. Took a while to find the right fit. But it IS doable.

There's opportunities in the military for IT. My neighbor was with the Army for a number of years and did a ton of networking stuff. You may not have to retire to start on the path :)

I worked as a reception in Marriott 11years before after I graduated from college (My major is tourism management) and then I went to a private hospital to played as marketing manager after that I am hired by an internet technology CO. like a sales. NOW I TEACH MY SELF SWIFT&JAVA. Cause I found no matter in what generation people must good at a skill.
I'm 44 and worked in the tech industry from 1991 to 2006 duing coding (machine and cnc language + some c++ and html) along with other tech work . I changed carreers into the medical field. I am a tech person and always will be. Now I have had the itch to go back into tech. I was thinking about coding again but maybe web development.
I accidentally got into IT at 40 (0 previous experience or interest) and accidentally ended up specializing in enterprise WLAN about 7 years ago. Now after 15 years I have a very cushy job as a systems engineer with a major manufacturer with all kinds of toys to play with, which is why I'm watching Eli's videos. I wasn't starving to get here either.
Flexibility and curiosity got me here. I have no college degree or certs and run circles around those that have. It's what you make of yourself.
Eli did mention that your worth as an older employee might be in management which is what happened to me but I was still able to get "up to my elbows" at the same time.
I'm 35 years old... My manager is around 7 years younger than me. Learning a lot from them. Envy them but at the same time they are helping me grow my career.
I just turned 26 almost two weeks ago, I'm studying for my Applied Associate's degree in Network Administration. I do not feel old at all entering into the IT field.

I start in IT at 35 having wife 2 children and trying to have 3rd when I was unemployed. I was looking 3 month fir my first job in helpdesk. Now I work in second job (still helpdesk but have more freedom to to everything until I will cant help then. I ask for help Admin) for better money. I can say for every one. NEVER STOP TRYING, no excuse am I too old, short, fat. If you really want job will find you but you must try!!! Do everything to find. In time when I was changing my job I send my CV even in shop with pc parts just to be close to IT. No job is forever. Only you decide what you want.

I’m 29 and slowly working on getting into IT, learning a few programming languages and working towards my CompTIA A+ certification. But as a purchasing manager, my biggest problem is finding what my skill set can bring to the table in the industry.
In my 20's I was young and foolish. Did a lot of bad stuff. Now I am 36 and just started diploma in web development. I would kill for a junior position with a mediocre pay. The fear of not being able to get a job is depressing but hey, it's a new chapter of life. Thanks for the great video, Eli :)

I got into desktop support at age 30. Many people I started with had years of experience in IT. Believe me the first 6 months you're in that type of role, you get thrown in many different fields that these other long term do not know as half as much knowledge as one who starts in entry level.

Dude Im 23 and I want to go to college next year. I thought I was way too old but no, youre not. Youre never too old. I didnt take studying seriously when I was younger, because all i wanted to do was have fun. Fun with friends and fun with people. Now that Im more mature, I am a lot more hungrier for success and feel like going to college at my age would benefit me more now than going to college at 18 straight after high school.

I just think it's a missconception that most people have of programing, it's very intimidating because most of the highlighted stuff that someone not in the community see's are the wiz-kids who started programing when they were 2 and it becomes the imagined standard for us. I had to check several sources before I felt that it was an acceptable thing to get in to and I'm 22 for gods sake. I'm a toddler and I worried about it.
I went back to college at age 30 and finished IT degree at age of 35. I got hired at 36 and now I am 38. I am doing server, system management as well as helpdesk, networking. lol.. You are not too late. 29 is still very capable age even if you have no IT degree. Although, I admit it will be very hard to get good IT starting job at that age if you are going back to school. Just don't go for helpdesk. Look for company with little to no IT and asking you to do everything. You will get tons of good experience in half the time and get promoted at 2x speed. Really.. if you go for simple helpdesk job, you will most likely be doing it for next few years with no promotion and minimal salary. Avoid helpdesk.. try to skip all low level IT jobs and look for a chance. :p
Didn't get into school until I was 27, graduated a couple years ago, been a developer since. Now going back again for a second degree, just because I want to do a little career switching someday; never even thought of my age as a limit. Even at my tech there was a student in one of my classes pushing 70. Pretty sure the guy is also a developer now. So the truth of the matter is, there really is no age limit.

I find it funny when people complain he is rude in his videos, yes he is rude, but what do you expect he's in IT, he's probably a developer. He is smarter than the average bear. And what comes with this is a sort of god complex, and the majority of developers I have met are like this, if you can't deal with it you better high tail out of this profession because almost everyone is like this.
In the future people will have 2-3 careers during their lifetime. There has been a lot written about that, it is expected that people will have second education in mid 40s and do something else.
I think the main problem with learning programming is not the age but generations. People who are under 20 right now basically grew up with smartphones and technology, everyone under 35 knows how to use computers and learn programming (or something else) online, they are comfortable with that. People over 50 may know computers but there are lots of assumptions that they are kind of slow or their knowledge is outdated. In reality, it depends on a person. There are those who always act age appropriate, have a wild life when they are younger and then settle down, become boring. Everyone learns exponentially until they are grown up and then they become stable and static, instead of learning new things. Those who do can always acquire new skills.
Also, not all people look or act their age when they are older. These people can achieve a lot because they don't play by rules
I am 32 years old. Last year I enrolled in the computer science degree program at the local university. Since I was a child I have always practiced with computer science: I have written many kinds of "Hello World" without ever going to the next level. Now I would like to take it seriously and make this passion become a job. I hope it's not too late!

I hope you stick with it. The way I see it, people in our age are doing it right. Remember, there was a time when going in to your 30's you started your career, family etc.
Just turned 27 and going into senior year. This certainly lifted a lot of weight off me.
I feel old at 28 because when I started fixing computers replacements cost more than repairs, now a lot of times replacing is significantly cheaper than fixing. I started with MAC OS 5 and Windows 95 ... and uses every Linux kernel after 1.3 I watched floppies and optical media become legacy tech... that's how I feel old
It just takes some demystifying. I felt worried when I was 27- much like this guy lol. However, when I got started in IT- I got my A+, TestOut PC pro, Google IT support, Dell ISM v3 and v4, Dell Network associate, Dell Poweredge server, Dell converged and HCI, Dell Vxrail specialist, Net+, SEC+, Project +, CYSA+, Pentest+, CCNA, SSCP, ECES, earned a certificate of proficiency in routing and switching from my local community college, and got a Bachelors in Cyber all in 5-6 years- I feel like a fool looking back now, having thought "Am I too old?"
Now, am I going to be the next IT entrepreneur that comes out with some code that changes everything? No. That's the problem though. People often think of IT as some esoteric knowledge only obtained by prodigies. IT is a HUGE field with room for anybody that wants in.

I know someone who was 31 and in one year went crazy with studying and was better at Java then most people coming out of school and he had a wife and child and a totally different job to start. So it's possible, I know I'm about to start.
I just turned 30 years old, disabled and finally able to get a chance to go to school after 10 years of denial, without no assistance and etc after able to get approved for a loan. I want to go to college for communications and computer engineer
i wish i never wasted my childhood on video games,geez if only i could start programming/coding at early age my life would be different..
