  • A particular tombstone made me feel incredibly sad...
Welcome to another Cemetery tour. Today we are checking out the Easton Cemetery with Alan from Revenge of the Apocalypse. This place has it all, including mausoleums, statues, famous people and tons of history. The unique thing that I love is that you can take a self guided tour around the grounds to learn about some notable people. Surprisingly, when I came upon the location of a young child, I became very emotional, something that has never happened to me before. So come along with me as we check out some of the beauty, the history and learn more about the amazing Easton Cemetery. Enjoy

There were too many beautiful things to list in comments, but my favorite tombstone was a tie between sweet little Lucy (I cried happy tears) and the Knight with the verse from Psalms on the front. It's considered the Lord's "protection Psalm", and one I pray every time life gets to be too hard to bear. Georgeous, serene place that gives off a sense of calm and peace. Absolutely lived it!!!!!

My back yard faces the Cematary. There are two back to back Cematary here. The Easton Cematary and the Easton heights Cematary that is just west of this Cematary although not as old as Eaton Cematary as that Cematary has many Easton historians buried there even State Govenors. Many of these last names still have distance relatives living in Historic Easton. These two Cematarys were once owned by two brothers who at some point argued over the land and they devided it and made them into two cematarys devided only by chain link fence.
There is a wealth of History to both these Cematarys.
I have lived in Easton all my life and I'm now 70 yrs old. As a young teen you often took your girlfriend for walks in the deepest part of the Cematary to sneaks a few kisses. Lol. Lol. Enjoy your visit come back to Easton to learn about our History.

The building that looks like Medieval Times is a receiving vault. Caskets would be stored until graves were dug or elaborate monuments were being built to receive them. My uncle died in February and the ground was frozen solid. His remains were kept in a receiving chapel until the grave could be dug. Abraham Lincolns body lay in a receiving vault until his grave was ready. He was buried multiple times! Now that is something you really need to read about. During a pandemic, the receiving vaults or receiving chapel were overflowing. You hit all the high spots. Lovely. Thank you for the walk today.

While walking through the cemetery where my family and someday I will be buried I found the stone of a little girl who was only six years old when she died. Next to it was an eight year old boy who died the same day. Next to him were a man and woman who died the same date as the children. I knew a man whose wife was buried in that family section and asked him what happened. They all died in a boating accident on the Potomac River. He said it was a sad day for his wife's family. Occassionally I walk over to their graves and always feel a heavy sadness like I personally knew them.

Here's the thing about Lucy; she died over 160 years ago, so if her spirit had lingered, she would have moved on once her mother passed over. Also, at the time she was born, Christmas trees were not a big thing, and really not known in the US. It wasn't until 1848 that Queen Victoria started the tradition in England (thanks to her German husband's traditions), and weren't commercially sold in the US until 1850. It wasn't until the 1890's that it became popular on the east coast of the US, so asking Lucy to light up the equipment like a Christmas tree would mean nothing to her (if she was still hanging around). Just a bit of history there. ;)

Not fancy places like this one, but incredibly interesting with lots of history about the people who lived in local communities. A lot of child deaths, unfortunately, due to starvation during and after the Civil War, in all the graveyards. He reads all the info on the markers, too, which is nice if you're a genealogist. I enjoy going down the back roads and small towns to these forgotten graveyards with him, via video.

What a delightful video! I LOVE old cemeteries! There aren't too many of them here in central FL where I live now. But back in NW and west-central Ohio, they were everywhere!! I have tons of photos. My dad's ancestors were numerous in Auglaize and Allen counties, and in alot of the old cemeteries, they're all over the place. There's a country church on a rolling hillside that dates back to the 1860's, with one of the most amazing cemeteries ever. The original gate still stands, and the cemetery wraps from one side, around the back and to the newer section on the other side that is starting down the hill and is still active. My maiden name is everywhere in there. My great-grandparents and various other shirttail kinfolk. A cemetery a few miles away has a plot for the first ones to have come to that part of Ohio. A cemetery further down in the next county has more of them, along with the ones who married in. There's a spooky old abandoned family cemetery in the woods off the edge of a farm field, with more of them yet. While I like being where I'm at now, I do miss those cemeteries!

I live in Oakdale, Ca. we have an old cemetery behind my house. My husband and I walk through it often, the most alarming thing we have found is that there is a very large row in the back of the cemetery of graves of babies that all died in 1948 or 1949. We have tried to obtain some information about this strange occurrence with no results.

There is a cemetery near me, one of the oldest in the area, where there are some native Americans graves. Not sure if this is true or not, but supposedly they were buried in a sitting position, and as the ground settled around the graves, you could see a rounded mound where the bodies were...but over time it’s all flattened out.

I think the “Knight” is actually St. Michael. He had a halo. The graves with the “flower beds” are just that. The beds were gardened by the bereaved with flowers in the summer. There are a lot of these in older gravesites. Sadly, no one is now alive to keep them up. Isn’t it touching that people feel compelled to leave remembrances for a child gone for over 100 years? Children’s monuments touch heartstrings.

I do indeed love this video. One of my favorite things all my life was walking thru graveyards and cemeteries. When my kids were little I'd take them, too, and they'd get excited that they were going to the "gravygardens." I have to say that Easton Cemetery is among the most beautiful and certainly the most extensive I've ever seen, and you did a nice job of taking us on a sojourn through it. But I, too, am intrigued by the Kunsman Mausoleum that is cinderblocked up. To me it gives the impression more that they were trying to keep something, someone IN, rather than keep people out. The mausoleum in the cemetery near us here that unsure no entry have double doors, the inner ones of heavy glass that are sealed shut, and the outer ones of cast turned iron bars that still allow for peering thru but also permit a more aesthetic appeal.
I'd be interested to hear what you find out about the actual reason for their having sealed the mausoleum this way. Keep us informed, and I'm looking forward to the next. Take care! 🌹

I think that many people who have a fascination with ghosts and hauntings are like Thomas in the Bible. Ghosts are like the nailprints that prove there is an afterlife. They need that evidence to give them reassurance. But if there are ghosts I don't know why they would hang out in a cemetery unless it was a favorite place in life.
