  • Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal celebrated its 50th Anniversary on May 7, 1989. The highlight of the event was the pacing approach to the station of SP 4449 and UP 8444. I had shot the equipment move of 8444 the previous day coming over Cajon Pass. There was also a lineup of cab units from the three railroads involved in the Union Terminal operations, the SP and ATSF units coming from Sacramento and the UP unit coming in with the 8444. The station was also open for regular Amtrak services, with the San Diegans and Coast Starlight arriving and departing. The following day the steamers paced each other leaving the terminal, and again going up Cajon Pass with the 4449 on the Palmdale Cutoff and the 8444 on the ATSF line (UP trackage rights).

    this had to one of the most historic moments in steam preservation history seeing 4449 and 8444 entering LA Union passenger terminal together side by side.

      Kanefan701 If 3751 was in it. She was the first locomotive to enter Union Station.

    I wish I could have seen this. I was on the east coast however. Sadly this will never be repeated. Great video.

      Yes! Three iconic 4-8-4’s altogether.

    It's too bad Santa Fe 3751 was still undergoing restoration during the event because I think the locomotive would have been the perfect addition to the anniversary. It was there on the station's opening day in 1939 after all. Oh well...

      I agree. Maybe it’ll be part of the 100th anniversary celebration, if it’ll happen.

    It's too bad they didn't recreate this event this year to celebrate the terminal's 75th anniversary.

    I noticed a small, high-pitched tooting sound, almost like an air whistle, heard at 8:24 and 8:43. If I may ask, do you know what the sound is coming from?

      There was a fellow on the platform with a horn/whistle rig on his vehicle. The sound you mention is an interurban whistle on his rig. The Nathan P3 horn you hear is also from that source.

      Oh wow. I always assumed it was SP 6051 greeting the two steamers.

      That sounded more like a P5, not a P3.

    A lot of smoke from the DPU. The 844 lacking in power?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The train is on a 1.6 % grade. On most roads in steam days even a big 4-8-4 would have required a helper with a train that size. The 8444 alone probably could have pulled the train up the hill solo, but at a very reduced speed from what you see in the video. The diesel is assisting to maintain track speed account they didn't want to tie up that busy line for the hour or so it would have taken with the steam doing it solo from Victorville to Summit. Also, it's technically not a DPU, the E9 is being run by a second engineer, not remotely.
