My wife and I used to watch this movie every Thanksgiving. Since she died of covid in 2020, I haven't been able to watch it anymore. I've tried but it just destroys me now. Such a great movie though.

This movie makes me miss John Candy even more. He seemed like such a great person, both on and off camera, and nobody ever seems to say a negative word about him. Much like Del Griffith, John Candy was the "Real Deal, what you see is what you get." Rest in peace, John Candy. Also, John Candy should've gotten an Oscar for this movie. He makes me laugh and cry so hard every time I watch it.
This movie makes me sad at the end. The pain etched on John Candys' face at the end shows just how good an actor he was. We often see comic actors later transition into great serious actors, we lost him way too soon.

Definitely. I think that he shows two differening emotions within the same expression, at first, sadness over the reality of his own grief, and secondly, genuine happiness over the reality of his (now) friend's relationship. I would think that those who have walked the path of grief would relate closely to this final scene, as they have experienced it many times over.
As a Canadian I would like to suggest a Canadian story featuring John Candy, Cool Runnings, based on the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.... Candy at his best!!!!
You both TOTALLY underplayed the sentimentality of the ending! The pay-off of the movie is when Neil puts the clues together and then goes back to look for Del. The look of remorse on Neil's face when he discovers Dell's situation turns to a look of determination when he lifts up his eyes. He knows what he has to do! The cut to the next scene is BRILLIANT. You see them both carrying Dell's trunk up the street as they walk to Neil's home. This pain-in-the-ass who aggravated him throughout the movie has now become his friend!
The teacher and the secretary from Ferris' school are also in this movie (The announcer and the desk clerk). Are you telling us, they have multiple jobs…?
In the original script there are earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. So when Neal finally makes it home, and has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos. The editing also means his wife's acting was a little 'off' as she played it with her suspicions throughout so axing the other scenes makes her seem a little strange to me. Also, the robber in the original script was a pizza delivery kid who’d brought them food earlier. Loads was cut from Hughes’ original screenplay and It had an estimated run time of 3 hours !
I'm a little surprised to read these reactions, because I never batted an eye at the wife's reaction to Neal showing up. I presumed it was just the emotion of Neal finally showing up after the ordeal, and managing to make it back in time for dinner.

Something about her reaction just didn’t feel right in the theatrical release but make perfect sense knowing about the axed suspicious subplot. It was never enough to ruin the movie, I love it, but there was just something not right.
@@colemanroberts1102 Same, and for me, I was were George was, feeling like Neal's wife would be really worried something terrible had happened to him. Her reaction to Mr. Griffith was partially her gratitude that Neil was safe and that Del had something to do with that.
John Candy manages to be a super likeable character in every movie he's in, even when he's playing an annoying character. You hit it on the head about John Candy's likeability making Del bearable. I hope you'll eventually watch more of his movies. I'd suggest "Who's Harry Crumb," "The Great Outdoors," and "Uncle Buck" to start, but there are so many more good ones that he was in. I can't actually think of a movie he was in that I didn't like. There may be one out there, but I can't think of any right now. Hope you're having a great weekend! ✌🤓

FYI: Steve Martin's character doesn't work in New York, he works in Chicago for a marketing/advertising firm. He was in New York to show a client the new ideas for an ad campaign.
Schlemiel/schlimazel is an archetype in Jewish humor. In Yiddish, a schlimazel is an unlucky person. In a restaurant, if the waiter spills the soup, it will land on the schlimazel. A schlemiel is a good hearted person who either brings bad luck to those around him, or is someone who screws things up. A schlemiel is the waiter who spills the soup. In the schlemiel/schlimazel story, the schlimazel always bears the consequences of the schlemiel's screw ups. Hooking up a schlemiel/schlimazel couple makes good comedy, because minor misfortunes are the stuff of great comedy. But, it's always slightly bittersweet because the schlemiel is always a good person at heart who doesn't want to hurt anyone. If done right, it's also a feel good story, because the schlimazel will grow as a person and learn to forgive and accept. This movie and Uncle Buck are Thanksgiving traditions in my family. I love both those movies.
For the record: yep, Kansas does, in fact, get that cold. My first year out of college I did an internship in Olathe, Kansas and lived in the Overland Park/Shawnee area (home to both Paul Rudd and Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis!). During the winter, the icing was so bad at one point that the layer of ice coating my car was so thick that I literally couldn't get into my car for several days. It was bonkers. And I say that as someone who grew up in Vermont and went to college at Syracuse, one of the snowiest campuses in America.
Yeah, I spent the first 16 years of my life in northeast Kansas & then moved to Michigan. While Michigan had more snow (I was on the west coast of Michigan, where there’s lots of lake effect snow), Kansas was quite often colder & a lot windier.
be glad you're not here now. we've had a 120 degree heat index for like two weeks. we have some of the largest swings in temps. -20 or 30 in the winter and 120 in the summer. get to the west part of the state where i was born and a 40 mph wind is just a breeze.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Thats funny. I grew up on the west side of the state of Michigan( I moved back a few years ago) and then went to school and lived in Kansas for about 4 years. Michigan definitely gets more snow(lake effect). I remember Kansas getting a consistent dusting pretty well(One year I was there the snow was insane), but there was always just a lot of ice - it made climbing, seemingly the only hill in the state, to get to class(KU in Lawrence) an absolute struggle.

The redhead woman at the rental car counter played the secretary to Principal Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller. This is definitely an Odd Couple type movie. I agree with the sentiment BUT I would say "Self-Love is great but Self-Awareness is better" because I know people who after self reflection are STILL in self-delusion state.
"Are they going the wrong way?" The wrong way scene might be a perfect comedic sequence. It builds so slowly, every joke is set-up masterfully, and then the 💀💀and 😈 come out of nowhere! John Candy laughing maniacally in the devil costume lives rent free in my head forever and plays whenever something goes horribly wrong for me 😅
Unfortunately, the film that was released is heavily cut and there’s a lot more in the film. some of it has come to light in the form of low quality deleted scenes, but other stuff we just have the script/dialog. apparently there’s a couple more hours worth of stuff. for example, there’s a subplot where the wife thinks neal is cheating on her with a woman named del, which is why she’s so happy to meet del at the end. another example is the black eye del has at the end, which was from a scene that was cut. And the reason they were robbed in the hotel is del ordered a pizza and gave the delivery guy a pitiful tip, so he robbed them of revenge. the exploding beer cans mentioned in the dialog was part of a cut scene too. there’s a lot we missed out on watching, though some can be seen, albeit in really bad quality. this is one of my favorite movies, but it’ll always be incomplete.
Same with when Del says that Marie died 8 years ago he gives a big monologue that some can say alters the reason he is invited to Neals home. It seems more manipulative or guilt tripping than Neal just doing so out of the kindness of his heart. I would have liked to see some of the deleted scenes though.
Funny you mention the black eye: I was looking at Candy at the end, and I was thinking he looked like he had a black eye - thinking it was real & the make-up artist did a crummy job of hiding it!
I disagree the movie is perfect as it is. With those scenes it would have changed it tone, it would have maked it less endearing.and light hearted. Kill your darlings.
When Neal is sitting in the train at the end and remembers the times he had with Del, Steve Martin had no idea the camera was still rolling, so that's him being his natural self. He just used the time to rerun a few lines and his laughter is genuine, since he's thinking about what scenes are upcoming. John Hughes turned the entire thing around and made this the bittersweet finale.
at the beginning of the movie, when Steve Martin is racing Kevin Bacon for the taxi, Kevin Bacon was making a different movie called She's Having A Baby. and in that movie, this same scene of them racing each other for the taxi appears!
I’m not certain (because I’m a ’Murican), but I think admitting this much of a lack of awareness of John Candy means these guys have to rescind their Canadian citizenship. I thought John Candy was Canadian Prime Minister in absentia. Or is it Trebek? Either way, these two should watch Uncle Buck if they haven’t already. And maybe some old Jeopardy reruns. I say all this in good fun, of course.
This is one of my favorite movies, and your guys' reaction exemplifies something I love about it: how the film is a comedy for most of its runtime, and then that reveal in the last 10 minutes re-contextualizes the whole story and nearly changes the entire genre.
Blast from the past! loved this movie growing up. John candy, Steve martin, Martin short, Dan akroyd are some of my favorite actors/comedians from that era.
Kansas winters can be brutal. Not like Canada, mind you. But below zero windchill and instead of snow, ice. When you get into the plains, it's accentuated by the flatness.
The final 10 minutes of this film really make you understand everything. Dell is just lonely & lost without Marie. When Steve Martin figures it out is so heart wrenching. The fact that in the end they truly became friends is so great.
A lovely reaction, guys. I love your channel. Another great Steve Martin comedy of this era is the superb ‘DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS’, in which you’ll see a totally different performance from him, a comic masterpiece of acting. You’d both love it!
I miss John Candy so much. Never been anyone like him, before or since. So effortlessly charming, absolutely hilarious, and could give such vulnerability and emotion to his characters, even in movies that made you bust a gut laughing.
They filmed one of the scenes not too far from me in Bativia, NY; just open land the car driving. BUT the crew stopped at a restaurant real late, almost no staff but John Candy wanted a LARGE pizza and offered to make it himself. In gratitude they posed for pictures and autographs still on display.
The thing is, Del is actually a super fun and gregarious guy. The reason Martin's character is so annoyed is he's TRAVELING with him, and Del travels very differently than him. Some of my best friends, who I love dearly, and will always want to hang out with, I'd rather die than travel with, because our styles are so different. I imagine that Del and Neil became friends, and when just hanging in social situations, Neil quite enjoyed being with Del, since he's a fun guy.
This is by far one of my top five holiday films. I absolutely love the heartfelt turn at the end. And that exchange between Steve Martin and Edie McClurg is pure brilliance! "You're fucked" gets me every damn time!
Yes, that's Ben Stein teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off played the Airline customer representative. Also, Edie McClurg, the rental car attendant "You're Fd," was the principal's secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

So, to commute everyday from Chicago to New York would be similar to doing a daily commute between Winnipeg and Toronto, or Winnipeg and Vancouver. Distances between those cities are roughly equal. It’s still a 3-4 hour flight each way.
My impression is that he works at a Chicago ad agency, but in the pre-zoom days, he and his partner had to meet the client in person to show him the ad layouts.

I knew a guy who lived in North Carolina and worked in DC. He would fly out on his own plane Monday morning and had an apartment in DC where the stayed through Friday and flew back home for the weekend to be with his wife and kids. He did that for years before retirement.

This is one of the greatest comedic pairings in cinema history. Two absolute geniuses of their craft. The only thing bigger than John Candy's humor was his heart. No matter how annoying he was at times, you couldn't help but love him. Great reaction as always!! 😊

This movie was released when video rental stores still had posters of the new releases in their stores, and I was lucky enough to get a large poster for this movie cheap when one of my local video stores sold it to make room for new posters.
This movie is a classic . If you haven't seen Due Date please react to that one. The plot is a total remake of this movie, but it's also so funny in its own right.
Like the rest of the world I just miss John Candy. I know Canadians have that polite stereotype but it seems justified when you go through the list of Canadian movie stars like John, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis etc who despite being huge stars who could throw their weight around always stayed humble and all their co stars rave about how nice they are behind the scenes

I like to think that the other guy in the initial marketing meeting, is actually (in universe) Ferris Buellers dad. He's played by the same actor and from the snippets of conversation you get in Ferris Bueller, his dad works in marketing. Then there's the car rental clerk and the airplane announcer, who are both in Ferris Bueller (As Rooney's secretary and an economics teacher, respectively). Looking at the Dad's age, it looks like a good 10 years prior, so totally possible for all of those characters to have moved location and the latter two moved jobs. Also a John Hughes film, so could definitely be in

Bit of trivia for you Steve Martin's house was built especially for the film as there were more scenes in the house, but they were cut because the running time was too long.
To see where Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, and Joe Flaherty worked together before their movie careers, see the online clips from SCTV, the originally Canadian TV sketch show, where they all played multiple characters. That show was a TV offshoot of the Toronto branch of the Second City comedy troupe. Dan Aykroyd also was a Toronto member.
One of the coolest facts about this movie is the ending. The original filming sees Del racing to beat Neal when he arrives at the Chicago train station, where he reveals that Marie is dead and he has no home. John Hughes felt that ending didn't paint Neal in the best light as he would feel "obligated" to bring Del home with him. So they reversed the shot of the train leaving to make it look like Neal was coming back to the station for Del (you can even see a person briefly walking backwards for a frame or two).
There is an end credit scene with William Windom still looking at the pictures in New York, apparently spending Thanksgiving there in his office (Turkey meal nearby) But it is not shown on TV usually. There was also a much longer cut that has never been seen.
The rental car is clearly from the same company that made the Family Truckster in National Lampoon's Vacation. Don't you recognize the Metallic Pea color?
The 2nd motel w 2 twin beds is still around in Gurnee IL on Rt 41 (Skokie Hwy). A few yrs back they decided to lose the original sign for a more ‘modern’ one. Nooooooooooo!!!!!!😱😩😞 Restaurant next door, Fat Man’s, has a pretty decent Fri nt fish fry.😋 Many of the snowy exterior scenes were filmed around this stretch of 41. This film has & will always make me tear up. It invites us all to have a look in the mirror- to realize or perhaps admit ‘I can do better’. All of us have had to make lemonade in our lives whilst dodging the incoming lemons thrown our way. Here we see 2 gentlemen doing just that- 1 with an instant ‘from concentrate’ mix, the other a slow, grueling, hand squeezed batch. And yet they manage to find respect- and love for the other’s mix. Fact is if we all attended a “Life’s Lemonade taste-testing’ event w 10 of our neighbors or colleagues, the majority of us would gladly pick up our own thermos head home w it asap!!! One never knows what another- the waitress or teacher or driver or fellow passenger- is going through on any given day. As they say: In a world where you can be anything… Be kind. Do better.💕 I love John Candy in ‘Only The Lonely’. I think he really put a lot of himself, his SELF, into the film. It’s a hidden gem of what might have been. Never wasted time watching a flick w you two; Appreciate y’all! Stay safe & love big💖

John Candy manages to be a super likeable character in every movie he's in, even when he's playing an annoying character. You hit it on the head about John Candy's likeability making Del bearable. I hope you'll eventually watch more of his movies. I'd suggest "Who's Harry Crumb," "The Great Outdoors," and "Uncle Buck" to start, but there are so many more good ones that he was in. I can't actually think of a movie he was in that I didn't like. There may be one out there, but I can't think of any right now. Hope you're having a great weekend! ✌🤓

Schlemiel/schlimazel is an archetype in Jewish humor. In Yiddish, a schlimazel is an unlucky person. In a restaurant, if the waiter spills the soup, it will land on the schlimazel. A schlemiel is a good hearted person who either brings bad luck to those around him, or is someone who screws things up. A schlemiel is the waiter who spills the soup.
In the schlemiel/schlimazel story, the schlimazel always bears the consequences of the schlemiel's screw ups. Hooking up a schlemiel/schlimazel couple makes good comedy, because minor misfortunes are the stuff of great comedy. But, it's always slightly bittersweet because the schlemiel is always a good person at heart who doesn't want to hurt anyone. If done right, it's also a feel good story, because the schlimazel will grow as a person and learn to forgive and accept.
This movie and Uncle Buck are Thanksgiving traditions in my family. I love both those movies.
For the record: yep, Kansas does, in fact, get that cold. My first year out of college I did an internship in Olathe, Kansas and lived in the Overland Park/Shawnee area (home to both Paul Rudd and Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis!). During the winter, the icing was so bad at one point that the layer of ice coating my car was so thick that I literally couldn't get into my car for several days. It was bonkers. And I say that as someone who grew up in Vermont and went to college at Syracuse, one of the snowiest campuses in America.
As a lifelong Kansas resident, I can confirm - it does get cold here :) Of course, right now, we could use some of that cold...
Yeah, I spent the first 16 years of my life in northeast Kansas & then moved to Michigan. While Michigan had more snow (I was on the west coast of Michigan, where there’s lots of lake effect snow), Kansas was quite often colder & a lot windier.
be glad you're not here now. we've had a 120 degree heat index for like two weeks. we have some of the largest swings in temps. -20 or 30 in the winter and 120 in the summer. get to the west part of the state where i was born and a 40 mph wind is just a breeze.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Thats funny. I grew up on the west side of the state of Michigan( I moved back a few years ago) and then went to school and lived in Kansas for about 4 years. Michigan definitely gets more snow(lake effect). I remember Kansas getting a consistent dusting pretty well(One year I was there the snow was insane), but there was always just a lot of ice - it made climbing, seemingly the only hill in the state, to get to class(KU in Lawrence) an absolute struggle.
John Hughes' ability to show gentle humanity without being frivolous or patronizing is some lost magic.

The redhead woman at the rental car counter played the secretary to Principal Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller. This is definitely an Odd Couple type movie. The wrong way scene might be a perfect comedic sequence. It builds so slowly, every joke is set-up masterfully, and then the 💀💀and 😈 come out of nowhere! John Candy laughing maniacally in the devil costume lives rent free in my head forever and plays whenever something goes horribly wrong for me 😅
Unfortunately, the film that was released is heavily cut and there’s a lot more in the film. some of it has come to light in the form of low quality deleted scenes, but other stuff we just have the script/dialog. apparently there’s a couple more hours worth of stuff.
for example, there’s a subplot where the wife thinks neal is cheating on her with a woman named del, which is why she’s so happy to meet del at the end. another example is the black eye del has at the end, which was from a scene that was cut. And the reason they were robbed in the hotel is del ordered a pizza and gave the delivery guy a pitiful tip, so he robbed them of revenge. the exploding beer cans mentioned in the dialog was part of a cut scene too. there’s a lot we missed out on watching, though some can be seen, albeit in really bad quality.
this is one of my favorite movies, but it’ll always be incomplete.
Same with when Del says that Marie died 8 years ago he gives a big monologue that some can say alters the reason he is invited to Neals home. It seems more manipulative or guilt tripping than Neal just doing so out of the kindness of his heart. I would have liked to see some of the deleted scenes though.
Funny you mention the black eye: I was looking at Candy at the end, and I was thinking he looked like he had a black eye - thinking it was real & the make-up artist did a crummy job of hiding it!
I wish we could get a restored (as much as possible of course) Hughes Director's Cut of the original film.
I disagree the movie is perfect as it is. With those scenes it would have changed it tone, it would have maked it less endearing.and light hearted. Kill your darlings.

When Neal is sitting in the train at the end and remembers the times he had with Del, Steve Martin had no idea the camera was still rolling, so that's him being his natural self. He just used the time to rerun a few lines and his laughter is genuine, since he's thinking about what scenes are upcoming. John Hughes turned the entire thing around and made this the bittersweet finale.
at the beginning of the movie, when Steve Martin is racing Kevin Bacon for the taxi, Kevin Bacon was making a different movie called She's Having A Baby. and in that movie, this same scene of them racing each other for the taxi appears!
I’m not certain (because I’m a ’Murican), but I think admitting this much of a lack of awareness of John Candy means these guys have to rescind their Canadian citizenship. I thought John Candy was Canadian Prime Minister in absentia. Or is it Trebek? Either way, these two should watch Uncle Buck if they haven’t already. And maybe some old Jeopardy reruns. I say all this in good fun, of course.
It is wild that they had never heard of him until recently. My two nieces who are both under 12 and live in the UK have known John Candy for years.

This is one of my favorite movies, and your guys' reaction exemplifies something I love about it: how the film is a comedy for most of its runtime, and then that reveal in the last 10 minutes re-contextualizes the whole story and nearly changes the entire genre.
Blast from the past! loved this movie growing up. John candy, Steve martin, Martin short, Dan akroyd are some of my favorite actors/comedians from that era.
Kansas winters can be brutal. Not like Canada, mind you. But below zero windchill and instead of snow, ice. When you get into the plains, it's accentuated by the flatness.
these guys are two of the greatest comedy minds of their time - having them together is brilliant and so much fun
The final 10 minutes of this film really make you understand everything. Dell is just lonely & lost without Marie. When Steve Martin figures it out is so heart wrenching. The fact that in the end they truly became friends is so great.

I miss John Candy so much. Never been anyone like him, before or since. So effortlessly charming, absolutely hilarious, and could give such vulnerability and emotion to his characters, even in movies that made you bust a gut laughing.
The way his wife looks at him from the stairs the acting was so expressive she nailed it !! That look said so many things .
Almost like she trained for it and did it for a living!
John Hughes deleted scenes that involved her thinking Neal was having an affair. So her look was one of relief on multiple levels at the end.
I completely understand ‘particle panic.’ Whenever I think about the very small (or the very large) I start feeling like it’s all too much🤣
They filmed one of the scenes not too far from me in Bativia, NY; just open land the car driving.
BUT the crew stopped at a restaurant real late, almost no staff but John Candy wanted a LARGE pizza and offered to make it himself. In gratitude they posed for pictures and autographs still on display.
The crazy thing about all your thumbnails is Simone still looks good with all those different hairstyles. Your thumbnails are seriously awesome.
The thing is, Del is actually a super fun and gregarious guy. The reason Martin's character is so annoyed is he's TRAVELING with him, and Del travels very differently than him. Some of my best friends, who I love dearly, and will always want to hang out with, I'd rather die than travel with, because our styles are so different. I imagine that Del and Neil became friends, and when just hanging in social situations, Neil quite enjoyed being with Del, since he's a fun guy.
After enduring The Mist, I think you deserve the laughs you will get from this. 💜

It's interesting how these John Candy movies end on him & fade Out. Almost like a tribute which were made obviously before his death but feel like a tribute
So, to commute everyday from Chicago to New York would be similar to doing a daily commute between Winnipeg and Toronto, or Winnipeg and Vancouver. Distances between those cities are roughly equal. It’s still a 3-4 hour flight each way.
My impression is that he works at a Chicago ad agency, but in the pre-zoom days, he and his partner had to meet the client in person to show him the ad layouts.

I can't think of another movie ending that rips your heart in half and then immediately puts it back together, better than before.
I knew a guy who lived in North Carolina and worked in DC. He would fly out on his own plane Monday morning and had an apartment in DC where the stayed through Friday and flew back home for the weekend to be with his wife and kids. He did that for years before retirement.

This is one of the greatest comedic pairings in cinema history. Two absolute geniuses of their craft. The only thing bigger than John Candy's humor was his heart. No matter how annoying he was at times, you couldn't help but love him. Great reaction as always!! 😊

FunFact: The Canadian Mounted was thought to be a prop book used in several films but was an actual book published in the early 80s. The guy you recognized as the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off is Ben Stein. He used to be a speech writer for Nixon, he's been in quite a few movies, he hosted a game show with Jimmy Kimmel (Win Ben Stein's Money) and he's a conservative pundit on TV. Also, facing the faucet.
This movie was released when video rental stores still had posters of the new releases in their stores, and I was lucky enough to get a large poster for this movie cheap when one of my local video stores sold it to make room for new posters.

Like the rest of the world I just miss John Candy. I know Canadians have that polite stereotype but it seems justified when you go through the list of Canadian movie stars like John, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis etc who despite being huge stars who could throw their weight around always stayed humble and all their co stars rave about how nice they are behind the scenes

I like to think that the other guy in the initial marketing meeting, is actually (in universe) Ferris Buellers dad. He's played by the same actor and from the snippets of conversation you get in Ferris Bueller, his dad works in marketing.
Then there's the car rental clerk and the airplane announcer, who are both in Ferris Bueller (As Rooney's secretary and an economics teacher, respectively). Looking at the Dad's age, it looks like a good 10 years prior, so totally possible for all of those characters to have moved location and the latter two moved jobs.

Bit of trivia for you Steve Martin's house was built especially for the film as there were more scenes in the house, but they were cut because the running time was too long.
To see where Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, and Joe Flaherty worked together before their movie careers, see the online clips from SCTV, the originally Canadian TV sketch show, where they all played multiple characters. That show was a TV offshoot of the Toronto branch of the Second City comedy troupe. Dan Aykroyd also was a Toronto member.
One of the coolest facts about this movie is the ending. The original filming sees Del racing to beat Neal when he arrives at the Chicago train station, where he reveals that Marie is dead and he has no home. John Hughes felt that ending didn't paint Neal in the best light as he would feel "obligated" to bring Del home with him. So they reversed the shot of the train leaving to make it look like Neal was coming back to the station for Del (you can even see a person briefly walking backwards for a frame or two).

A Steve Martin film that gets overlooked for some reason is All of Me where Lily Tomlin’s soul enters his body but he’s still using it.

This film has & will always make me tear up. It invites us all to have a look in the mirror- to realize or perhaps admit ‘I can do better’. All of us have had to make lemonade in our lives whilst dodging the incoming lemons thrown our way. Here we see 2 gentlemen doing just that- 1 with an instant ‘from concentrate’ mix, the other a slow, grueling, hand squeezed batch. And yet they manage to find respect- and love for the other’s mix.
Fact is if we all attended a “Life’s Lemonade taste-testing’ event w 10 of our neighbors or colleagues, the majority of us would gladly pick up our own thermos head home w it asap!!!
One never knows what another- the waitress or teacher or driver or fellow passenger- is going through on any given day. As they say:

I love John Candy in ‘Only The Lonely’. I think he really put a lot of himself, his SELF, into the film. It’s a hidden gem of what might have been.
