He's one of my favorites to hear on podcasts. I think his advice is a safe way to train for most people, even if some successful athletes do threshold and sprint intervals.
Listened to this episode twice. I only discovered Stephen Seiler a year ago and can’t get enough of his talks. Thanks for having him as a guest. As a masters marathon runner I have improved consistently since taking his advice on board. Actually won my age group at Tokyo Marathon this year. Still gained more knowledge through this episode. ❤
I think a 7-zone does have real meaning. Zone 2 is more useful than zone 1 (Schantz 1983, and a 2022 review of pro runners showing minimum 60% max HR). Zone 4 may be more effective than 3 and 5 (Seiler intervals 2013), and sprints Z7 use phosphocreatine and create AMP compared to mid distance Z6 which is more glycolytic.
Great Info, the talk test doesn't seem to match up with my heart rate, on some easy days I can talk the whole time but my heart rate is high on other runs (tempo) its hard to talk and my heart rate is about the same on that other easier day, any ideas?
My favorite Koop Cast so far. I could listen to Stephen Seiler all day, Thanks for sharing. Cheers
Thanks for listening!

Glad I found this better late than never
totally up for helping in the ultrarunners research!

What's happening with the crowd sourced research? I'm keen!
What is the difference between 15hrs/week for 6-12 weeks before an event/race, and 10hrs/week consistently over many months or years?
When he said 60 to 65%, does he mean HR or %VO2 max?
Quality

This should not be the case unless there is some error in the measurement. If you are using a wrist based HR monitor, I would look into that first.
