OCEAN LINERS IN CINEMA: Not Just Titanic!

- Throughout the years ocean liners have provided the setting for many films. I've collected a few examples here in this video. I was mostly interested in the fictional ones -- so Titanic is not included.
SONG: • North And South(1985) ...
French Line was livid when they found out what the producers of "Lost Voyage" had planned. The ship had been sold with the understanding that the Art Deco interiors would be saved and the hull scrapped. Instead it was was gutted with explosions during filming, then sunk in shallow water so what remained of the decor was ruined by exposure. After that Transat, owner of French Line, did their own gutting, then sold the hulls for scrap..
Ooof.
The saviour of the Andrea Doria really went out with a bang, then.
cood it was so cool
Being an ocean liner in Hollywood always ends the same way: getting sunk.
the antoni graza from the movie ghost ship 2002 it's actually inspired after the ocean liner andrea doria
Ayano Aishi el ss Andera doria impacto con un ferry y sus Antonia graza hubo un expresión en la chimenea y hundió pico arriba saludos
yes
i knew
Just the design tho, but everything else they're story
@@FifoTheItalian yeah lol that's allready understood
The S.S Poseidon Made A Return In The Poseidon (2006) But It's Ship Pre Fix Was M.S
," There's got to be a.morning after. " sung on 1972's " The Posideon adventure".
I wouldn't be surprised if the 2006 Poseidon used the initials RMS. She was modeled after the QM2 which had the same initials. Then again, I don't know if the Poseidon hauled mail or not. Even so, for me personally, I'm not all that fond of the initials SS, and I just realized why. It's become way too common.
+germanname1990 RMS is only used on British liners, all other countries used SS for their steam powered ships. But since the 1970's I don't think any big steam powered ship has been built because of the poor fuel efficiency of steam power.
Indeed. Royal Mail Steamer/Ship. I know SS has been used for the United States Lines' SS United States, but I was always left wondering, "Why not USS?" Nonetheless, I haven't heard of any American ships use USS unless they were military ships. For example, the liner SS America used the name USS West Point while serving as a troopship during WWII.
But apart from that, all other countries, including the United States, used SS for their steamships, right?
USS stands for "United States Ship" and it's only used for their Navy ships. Even if the SS United States was built in association with the US Navy she was only in civil use, therefore only SS. The SS actually stands for "Screw Steamer" In the old times we had Paddle Steamers (PS). When they became rare people just began to assume that SS means Steam Ship. And to your question: Yes.
Well, that's a big help. Thank you. ^_^
If she wasn't RMS then I'd think her initials would be MV (Motor Vessel). I think that's what most modern cruise ships and non-steam-powered ocean liners use.
Also a movie called oceans away ( 2003 ) used empress of britain ( 1955 ) as fuji maru
You forgot the triangle 2001. The RMS Queen Mary plays the RMS Queen Of Scots
Actually I watched the movie. Its not the queen mary its the Aquatania.
@@cursedcat-3700 what do you mean it is the queen mary
@@penkagenova7073 I didn't say it was. I said in Triangle 2001 its not the queen mary. It's the Aquatania. Queen Mary doesn't have 4 funnels and you have to looks at the bows forward facing walls. There is a big difference and if you don't believe me look at the movie cover.
@@penkagenova7073 Oh sorry you might be talking to the other dude. Sorry.
@@cursedcat-3700 no im talking to you that's the queen mary the ship has 3 funnels not 4 the part under the bridge is round likely the queen mary on the aquatania is box like shaped
I can't forget RMS TITANIC. She is my favorite ship
well this list is only about fictional ships not real life ships
@@hevendor958 Not really the ship from the last voyage was real and then scrapped, just saying it was the S.S ile de France
@@FifoTheItalian yeah but that ship was portraying as a fictional Vessel
Titanic didn't portrayed anything so it still doesn't count
@@hevendor958 Oh.
The series 1899 also now added in two new ocean liners names Prometheus and Kerberos.
Poseidon 2006 is also based off the RMS Queen Mary 2 (most notably the stern)
I love these kind of ships
That was great! What a pleasure to see those movie liners. "The Poseidon Adventure" got me started on ocean liners at the age of 11 then a couple of years later "The Last Voyage" was on TV. I was young enough that those movies had a huge influence on me. I'm still intrigued by the capsizing scene of the original "Poseidon Adventure" (and I enjoy the whole movie of course) and by the views of the sinking Claridon, those decks and rows of portholes slanting down into the water. It's hard to explain why the images of a sinking ocean liner, especially in profile, fascinate though I take no pleasure at all in real-life incidents in which anyone is hurt or killed. All those staircases and corridors in deck upon deck and the solidity of a ship contrasted with the constantly moving water. Maybe there's some Freudian thing going on here. If you do a second video about liners in movies there's "Juggernaut" (1974 or 75) starring Omar Sharif who recently died; it was partially filmed on the Maxim Gorki. "The French Atlantic Affair" which was made for TV in around 1980 which used exterior views of the Festivale with some Queen Mary interiors and the explosion that went up through the hatch on the Claridon's foredeck. After "The Poseidon Adventure" Irwin Allen produced a TV movie called "Adventures of the Queen" that used the same model from TPA; it was the pilot for a TV series that was never made. Robert Stack starred in the TV movie, playing the captain and this was after he had already starred in "The Last Voyage" about 15 years earlier. There's also the little-known "History is Made at Night" with Charles Boyer and Jean Arthur which has a liner called the Princess Irene that's similar to if not identical to the Normandie. Thank you again for this video. As you can tell it got my boilers lit!
Andrew Brendan I'm always glad to hear what you think it lets me know if what I'm making is interesting or not. Somewhere on this channel I wrote, "there is a certain poetry about the demise of a great liner." It's a visually and physically impressive sight to behold. The depiction of Titanic sinking in the 1997 film is awe inspiring. You witness her forecastle slipping beneath the surface, the ever increasing slant of the decks, the sea crashing into the grand staircase, the forward funnel collapsing, and then finally her stern soaring high into the air with all her lights still blazing. Even then she is still beautiful.
***** I hadn't been aware of your earlier comment and that we are thinking in such similar ways. As the saying goes "Great minds run in the same direction"! Seeing the stern and propellers of the Titanic coming up out of the water in the 1997 movie is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in a movie. Long ago I saw a documentary program about the Anasazi tribe in the American west and something discussed was the size of some of the structures built by those people. I don't recall the exact words but there was something about how people respond to structures that "...are beyond human scale". I'm sure you've seen the scene in "The Last Voyage" when the uplifted stern of the Claridon is shown off to th left and from the starboard side and the camera moves to the right and alongside the sinking liner and the viewer can see the slanting rows of portholes and the lifeboats being lowered and then bow settling into the water off to the right. That is also, in my opinion, one of the most impressive scenes in movies about ocean liners. Then along with that we hear that calm voice over the P.A. system saying, "Abandon ship. Go to your lifeboats stations. All passengers go to the Promenade Deck. The lifeboats are now being lowered". One can imagine being aboard the Claridon and, to mix genres, thinking the same thing said by Rosemary in "Rosemary's Baby": "This is no dream. This is really happening!"
Over the years I've also realized Titanic sank in a rather unusual way. Most ships roll over on their side and some completely capsize. The Empress of Ireland, Lusitania, Britannic, Andrea Doria, and Costa Concordia all sank that way. In contrast Titanic maintained an almost even keel -- although she did develop a noticeable list to port. In my opinion her relative stability under such stress is a credit to Harland and Wolff.
+iluvcamaros you also forgot Britannic (2000), and Lusitania: Terror At Sea (2007)
iluvcamaros while the Titanic was sinking it was listing but most of the passengers went to the other side of the ship to keep it from rolling over or capsizing
Something about 2:09 to 2:18 is just so beautiful, I cannot put it into words
Other ships that picked up movies are Lusitania and Wilhelm Gustloff! Technically Cap Arcona was once played as the 1943 Titanic but I forgot that exists. XD
Sinking of the Lusitania : Terror of the sea (2007)?
Britannic (2000) ?
Those are the only ocean liners that you forgot to add tbh
Britannic was a hospital ship
@MisterAMC 117 no, it was gonna be a ocean liner but it was converted into a hospital ship
and on a side note, Lusitania and Britannic where not fictional, this video primary features ships that are fictional, or are based off the design of an actual vessel that exists
The SS Sultana needs to be made a more known to public audiences and crowds
RMS Queen Mary is the Poseidon!? I’m triggered
Nope it just looks like th poseidon
don't worry, they didn't use the Actual RMS Queen Mary, they've built a miniature model of the Queen Mary to act as the SS Poseidon.
oh yeah, the Model of the ship used in the film still exists to this day
A more recent movie and very funny is " Out to Sea " which featured the Westerdam.
Poseidon (2006) the ship in the poseidon movie was ms poseidon
WTF 13,000 VIEWS ZERO DISLIKES
Guess I'm just that likeable? (joke)
Make that 40 something dislikes
@@iluvcamaros1912 i see that you LUV CAMAROS
My boilers are fired up too! And like the music.
The Great Big Move channel has a good video on the difference between ocean liners and cruise ships everyone should see

wave: hey guys? have you seen ss poseidon 2006?
water particles: yeah why? you gonna hit that ship over there?
wave: yeah, but imma go straight for the face.
water particles: oh! we'll help!
**wave hits queen mary but still goes upside down**
wave: oh come on! now this story is cliche.
GC25 The one with the Queen Mary was the original Poseidon Adventure movie, the 2006 one was a reboot
Love the music
Do you believe the Titanic and Olympic were switched and it was the Olympic that sank?
John Alonso nope. Too many structural differences to change before titanic was launched. Wasn't enough time to switch everything
I believe so.
Heck no, that theory has been disproven so many times the people who made admitted to it being fake
oh for fuck... this stupid conspiracy theory again... how many times do we need to keep disproving it...
Its MS Poseidon Not SS poseidon
You're correct, MS would have been a far more realistic prefix, I perhaps was wishing she was a steam turbine powered ship rather than a more likely diesel powered cruise liner. I believe the film is a bit vague, it simultaneously tries to emulate modern cruise ships mixed with the original RMS Queen Mary. Since the ship isn't real I was aiming high!
Ms means motor ship and ss means steam ship poseído was a motor ship
The old one was a steamshhip
OK, I do not understand the 1972 version of Poseidon... wouldn't the funnels go flying off? those funnels are SUPER long anyway! If you know why, please reply to me and tell me how
The reason why the funnels didn't fell off its because when the film was being worked on, it's a scale model was built for the movie and that could be the reason why the funnels didn't fell off
Note: the Model that was used in the movie is in a Museum
What about the movie Britannic
Not a fictional ship
They didn’t use britannic for the film, they used it computer generated if uno what I mean
Lle de France went out in style, and I think its the only film that used. a REAL ship, not a set
Ile,the Ile De France was the hero to many of the Andrea Doria's passengers
basically, they used the Actual Île de France for the film and straight up sunk it in shallow waters, well until they scrapped it soon after.
For my opinion i was not there but if i was i would not vote for me my vote would be for
RMS QUEEN MARY
(Poseidon 1972)
*its called SS Poseidon in the films, not RMS Queen Mary (the Poseidon's Design was based entirely off of Queen Mary's)
SS Claridon aka SS Ile de France
I hoped any directors can make the film “Hell At Sea” which is about the sinking of Dona Paz in 1987 off Mindoro after colliding by MT Vector
as a filipino, i approve this
Theme from North & South
Ayy, wheres Britannic?
She is not a fictional ship and also she is not going to appear in this video because she counts as a Olympic class liner
What about the Britannic movie?
oh that movie is bullsheet
plus Britannic isn't a fictional ship
this list is only for Fictional ships not real-life ships
1:26 that looks like Andrea doria
This a part 2 of peril on the sea lost liners?
Beutyfull rms
Tu video de last vayage estuvo bueno
I love these kind of ships Edit:My favorite is Posedion (Not Rms Queen Mary)
Which poseidon?
1972 RMS Poseidon (Inspired by RMS Queen Mary)
2005 MS Poseidon
2006 MS Poseidon (some parts of the ship are Inspired by RMS Qeen Mary 2)
Why did tf I commented this?
Ur drunk if ur an adult or it was another person (your sibling if you have)
You forgot death ship 1980
Ss aeolus is actually a real ship
Or not
Because i search the ss aeolus on utube and i found a miniature of ss aeolus
Great vid !!
I thought ile de France had three funnels
+YIRU XING She had, but the third dummy funnel was removed during her refurbishment in 1947.
The dummy third funnel was removed, and the existing two were made larger and more streamlined.
What about Britannic and Sinking of Lusitania: Terror at Sea
yet again, they are not fictional, this video only goes for ships that are fictional, or based off of a pre-existing ship, Britannic and Lusitania aren't fictional, so they aren't included.
I think that the Queen Mary Was In a Big ManMade lake, and they threw water at her and then they repaired her. Correct me if you want
that was actually a Scale Model, not the actual ship itself.
Movie ships are awesome
Do you mean MV Poseidon
Not gonna lie the antonia graza looks like the andrea doria
thats mostly because it was based in entirely off of Andrea Doria
The first ship was not Poseidon
What did you Meen Not just The RMS Titanic?!
How in the world did the Antonia Graza blow up ?!?!?!?!
silvia weng It was basically a ghost ship that the main protagonist had to sink to free the souls onboard or something like that
0:15 I think you got the words too close because when I saw it's trailer, it is a little bit farther.
It was a wery cocked video. But the Britannic (2000),Juggernaut,Speed 2, and Poseidon (2005) miss for me.
Fuck the Britannic movie and fuck the Poseidon adventure (2005)
Happy anniversary for titanic 106years old ;(
The Titanic is not included in this video

ghost ship I knew it will come
You forgot ss cap arcorna for titanic 1943
the Cap Arcona was a real ship
Robert Young Yeah, some of the ships in this video are played by real ships. The 1943 Titanic movie was a Nazi propaganda movie, correct?
You know I can't really say one way or another
Isnt it ironic how the poseidon sunk in the ocean NUDGE NUDGE
I meant ship
The Titanic is beautiful and strongest ship in the world
No
(The Titanic sank in 1912 and it wasn't even strong enough to survive an Iceberg collision)
what where you saying again?
1:47 is wrong Ms not ss poseidon is not a steam ship
Where are the Lusitania, the Britannic and the Titanic? Also, there are 2 movies about the Titanic. Why didn't you mention them?
Because those ships are overrated
Just let the other ships have a chance
and this is fictional ships all them were real
La música es de norte y sur?
The poseidon movie is awesome
cool!!!!!
you missed hmhs britanic and rms lusatina
This video was more about real and/or fictional liners that were featured in films as a backdrop. Any media regarding Britannic/Lusitania usually is specific to those ships. They aren't "missed."
wheres Poseidon 2005
I'm serious I see you everywhere
How in the heck did the SS Antonia Graza blow up??!?
Chancey C it was a movie based off of real life but the ship was in the movie was fake

Also Britannic doesn't count as an ocean liner, it was meant to be one but because of WW1 all it was in its life was a hospital ship.

oh my god jesus the queen mary didnt sink jesus its in california longbeach
It's fictional -.- When you do a mistake on the internet I don't forgive you.
That's not the Queen Mary, that's the fictional ship Poseidon. Queen Mary just played it in the movie
Queen Mary was used for filming in the scenes that don’t involve sinking the rest was done with a model
Poseidon is not real
