  • An announcement by Vice President George Bush and James Beggs from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of Christa McAuliffe as the first Teacher to be an Astronaut on the Space Shuttle in the Roosevelt Room on July 19, 1985.
    ----
The Teacher in Space Project (TISP) was a NASA program announced by Ronald Reagan in 1984 designed to inspire students, honor teachers, and spur interest in mathematics, science, and space exploration. The project would carry teachers into space as Payload Specialists (non-astronaut civilians), who would return to their classrooms to share the experience with their students.
NASA canceled the program in 1990, following the death of its first participant, Christa McAuliffe, in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (STS-51-L) on January 28, 1986. NASA replaced Teachers in Space in 1998 with the Educator Astronaut Project, which required its participants to become astronaut Mission Specialists. The first Educator Astronauts were selected as part of NASA Astronaut Group 19 in 2004.
Barbara Morgan, who was selected as a Mission Specialist as part of NASA Astronaut Group 17 in 1998, has often been incorrectly referred to as an Educator Astronaut. However, she was selected as a Mission Specialist before the Educator Astronaut Project.

She is the sweetest! If only she knew....but she looked forward to it. Rest in peace Christa.

Christa's such a sweet and blessed soul. It's such a tragic and horrific experience to see that her mission would fail horrendously into the sky, along with six other astronauts in the same path. All of them, including Christa, herself, are missed dearly, to this day and beyond.

its very weird when you look at it, Christa won a first class ticket to her own Death, may she and the others rest in peace.

Totally unexpected for her, her crew, her family, the people watching, and everyone who knew the entire Challenger crew. It’s just tragic that that would ever happen, just nearly two minutes in the air. They’ll all be remembered with great respect and dignity.

She said some very chilling things while speaking she said her as one body and ten other souls with her on the spaceship to go with her it enough to bring chills up my spine.

I feel bad because Big Bird was supposed to be on the Challenger but he was too big so they decided to pick a teacher. RIP

Ms. Morgan was at Cape Canaveral on 1/28/86. There’s a video of her watching the launch and subsequent explosion. Can’t imagine how horrifying and devastating that was for her. She greatly admired Christa and knew very well that could have been her.

In this case the 2nd place was the winner as Morgan went into space later on.

Christa McAuliffe was the right choice to fly on the shuttle. She had spunk, humility, intelligence, a dry wit, and the ability to explain in layman terms what was needed to help kids and even adults understand the endeavour of manned spaceflight. When then President Reagan eulogized her on January 31, 1986, he described her brilliantly and perfectly.
"We remember Christa McAuliffe, who captured the imagination of the entire nation. Inspiring us with her pluck - her restless spirit of discovery. A teacher not just to her students, but to an entire people. Instilling us all with the excitement of this journey we ride into the future."
May she always be remembered for the way she lived, and for the way she served all of us, as a gifted and dedicated educator. The loss of Christa and her crew on the CHALLENGER is still felt by many around our country. Myself included. May they continue to rest in peace.

It's like... any death would have been tragic in NASA. Every single person that flies has put in the work to get there and is a very special person. So not to diminish anybody else. But... why did this have to happen to Christa. What a pure soul. Listen to your engineers, NASA.

Maybe its better to launch the shuttle at July and not at January because the weather is much warmer?!

The Teacher in Space was the idea of the Reagan Administration. He was going to use it in his State of the Union speech that night. But then he had to postpone the speech after the shuttle blew up.

I saw an interview with Barbara Morgan she said the finalists weren’t supposed to know who the winner was but her superintendent let it slip everyone but Christa knew.
